Is this true? Which mental disorders? I am only aware of states restricting for some physical conditions, most commonly epilepsy. I was not aware that any states restricted driving privileges for mental illness. I don't know how often (or how) it is enforced, but this is what the DMV says about it: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/driversafety/pm_guidelines.htm I see. My speculative interpretation (and it is highly speculative) is that this could be used for cases of senile dementia. Although it can be used for any sort of mental or physical condition not that its application is driven by symptoms, not diagnosis and that there has to be a "nexus" between the condition and driving. I do not think the mental health statutes currently do a very good job showing a nexus between the mental illness and inability to handle firearms safely (either in the original removal of rights or in the restoration proceedings which were the focus of the article Quade posted). Airchway Skydiving Sued
Southern_Man replied to lopullterri's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Just my novice opinion but I believe the requirement for student jumpers (not tandem) to have an AAD is a requirement for the USPA but I don't believe it is required by the FAA. I believe that means the rig would be airworthy according to the FAA. It has yet to be determined if the rigger in the Archway case has any liability. Similarly in the hypothetical case you speculate it would depend what the courts decided. Industry standard would certainly play a part and the industry standard per USPA is that students should have working AADs and Instructors should be doing thorough gear checks. Civil liabilty is a separate standard than airworthiness, although there is some rather obvious correlation. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Should I bring beer for my AFF instructors?
Southern_Man replied to charlie5's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
4 fridges. Appreciated but not required. Although I don't particularly like them Steve is fond of Beck's or Heinekin. I'm partial to Sam Adams myself but I won't be out this weekend. Hope your first jump class goes well and you get good weather. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

Looking For Best No Dogs, No Kids DZ
Southern_Man replied to popsjumper's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Very much not true with regards to dogs, although they are expected to be on leash. Kids are discouraged, but not banned. How many of the people need to be kept on a leash there?? Probably most of us. Leashes are not supplied, though, so you have to bring your own. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
It's actually not that surprising. In our society, virtually everyone who is "in the business" of officiating at funerals are clergy. And it's doubtful that non-clergy with the speech-writing and public-speaking skills to do it capably and comfortably, like classroom teachers or trial lawyers, for example, would be part of most funeral homes' network of available officiants. Hm! Maybe you've identified a niche market. Some funeral directors will do it themselves. Not all of them are comfortable or competent with that, though. It is very difficult for anybody, trained or not, to conduct a meaningful funeral for somebody they did not know personally. I say that having conducted many funerals including quite a few for people I had never met. In those cases I think the family is best served by doing most of it themselves. When I was approached to do one for somebody I didn't know that is (essentially) the role I tried to maneuvor into, with me acting as an MC of sorts and even doing some of the scripture reaing, prayers, etc. but hte family doing some of the substantive talking about the person's life and their memories. Sometimes the family wasn't comfortable even doing that much so you always work with what you have. In that case I tried to mine as many personal recollections and anecdotes as I could from them and include them in my remarks. For somebody w/out any faith connection I have no idea what sort of officiant they would want or what they want that person to do. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

This is just plain not true. About 10% of (primary and secondary) education spending comes from the Federal government. The exact percentage differs depending on what website you consult and when their figures are from. That is roughly double the percentage from 1990. It remains primarily a state funded enterprise but the federal contribution is substantial (and of course comes with substantial strings and regulatory mechanisms) "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Pacticing reserve pull during terminal freefall
Southern_Man replied to wayneflorida's topic in Safety and Training
I have practiced looking at, finding and touching my handles at terminal a few times. I believe it was recommended to me by a more experienced jumper but I can't remember who it was. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

at what point did you end up coming out of the clouds? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Last I heard he was planning another attempt this year but I've heard nothing on timing for that (I suspect money difficulties will lead him to push it out further). I'll try to check. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Felix is the Red Bull guy, I think he has only had one possible attempt scrubbed. I don't think he raises money as I think Red Bull is backing him. Michel Fournier is the guy who keeps running into "technical difficulties" "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

No, I'm not really being played. I just posted here for opinions about what the scam really is. But as I am writing this, I got a call from my friend who says that he indeed received a check for $1,800 (to cover $390 of goods and shipping) so it's obvious what the scam is. But I'm thinking of stringing the guy along by telling him that the check has been cashed, and ask him what I should do with all the extra funds. I'm thinking at the very least, I can waste some of his time, running to the Western Union office a few times. Any risk? There are some great sites on the internet for this: http://www.419eater.com/index.php Not that I (or they) necessarily recommend it. Nor have I nor would I ever engage in such a thing. There aren't really sides here. If the republicans give subsidies to Oil then GE will move more money towards oil exploration to take advantage of the subsidies. If the democrats move subsidies towards green energy then GE will move more resources there to take advantage of the subsidies. GE wins either way. R's and D's are two sides of the same coin, both giving huge breaks and corporate welfare to the rich. This is why GE (and other large corporations as well) give to both political parties--they are simply protecting their interests. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

if everything was so 'perfect', then why are more than 99% of all species that have existed over time already extinct? I guess they were not so 'perfect' afterall. God planted all those fossils there to test our faith, you know that, right TK? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Airchway Skydiving Sued
Southern_Man replied to lopullterri's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe a bit off the main topic but seems a good place to remind jumpers (especially those who feel strongly about personal responsibility) that they need to be having conversations with their parents/spouse/children/whoever about their feelings about not suing anyone. I had that conversation somewhere around jump 5 with my parents and have subsequently had it with my children (although they are not of the age of majority, they will be soon enough). I've told them in no uncertain terms that I am a big boy and am fully aware of the dangers I am exposing myself to. Sometimes things just happen in life, people aren't perfect and I choose to take those risks because the benefits are worth it for me. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Yes, and equally valid on both sides whether the argument is homosexuality or e.g. "natural substances vs. medications." Just because rattlesnake venom and poison ivy are natural doesn't mean they are good for you. Willow bark, however, has many great properties. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
