The dzo/gear dealer I was working for near Portland asked me to test jump an xbraced 85' fx icarus he took in on trade, I had 1300 jumps at the time and 1000 of them were on 135-107' stilletto's with almost all of them high performance landings. After inspecting the canopy fully I hooked it up and got it packed into my rig. even now I cannot believe the huge case of the nerves I got from that first jump, I kept questioning my decision to jump this thing on the ride to 8000' - kept thinking of the differences from my normal ride - smaller, xbraced, 7cell - all links in the chain opening was great, - where's the rest of the canopy?...lol. very very groundhungry, straight in approach on final on a no wind day to a tiptoe landing, I bought the canopy that weekend and spent the next two months doing hopnpops to learn what it could and couldnt do. I put 1000 jumps on the poll, without a big bag of tricks at your disposal and and a large bubble of awareness your a danger to anyone else in the air with you, not to mention what you can do to yourself in a brainfart moment Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... A good friend of mine who used to post here 'Chrissyliscious' was our designated packer, she was very meticulous with packing anything whether it was a student rig/ tandem/ or an up jumpers, she packed for me quite often as I was busy with students or video- I would estimate she packed for me at least 75 times - all but one were good (eliptical Xbraced) The one that wasnt good resulted in a diving line twist of doom. I started jumping a stilletto at 300 jumps, I figured out quite rapidly that body position played a huge part in avoiding shitting my pants situations, however... every once in a while you will get an opening that is so outside the norm that you will get a reality check - slap in the face to keep you humble. you can have great equipment, great packing, great body position and still on occasion have a rogue opening. you can call it bad luck I suppose, I like to think of it merely as shit happens. There are a few theaters in Portland like this. $3 to get in, beer and pizza available. (Sort of the opposite of VIP seating, with old couches in some, regular theater seating in others.) *** went to one several times when I lived in portland, but they were always several months behind on the new releases, have they changed this? being able to drink, eat while watching makes for a very enjoyable time - and since I have to go back in a few weeks I will wait to see it if they have it rather than see it here in a standard theatre.
