Ok, first I aint getting any younger and am planning to upsize my canopy - I no longer work for the dz or make the number of jumps to rip off a 270 without probably breaking myself andor hurting someone else, so a high w/l is silly. my problem is I really really like the characteristics of xbraced canopys and cant quite talk myself into a traditional eliptical yet. I am looking to put the w/l in the range of 1.5 1.8-1 area which should slow things down tremendously. I like really slow 100-120 degree or so slow carving turns to build speed and a nice but shorter swoop, gone are the more rapid 270's to a steep 600' dive. I plan on demo'ing several larger xbraced and conventional elipticals. what are your thoughts? is there a normal eliptical that mimics a xbraced but performs well at a lower wingload and doesnt have the insta-turn if you fart response? secondly is a fx-85 even worth spending the money on to reline and sell if it has 2k jumps on it, it is in fantastic shape (*other than the lines) with a custom slider but I would fear to sell it with the bad lines on it since someone might jump it before relining it. well... now the path has been blazed! the people planning to land a wingsuit merely need to aim for a parking garage... if an inflated T-shirt was enough then surely the added surface area afforded by the wingsuit should make multiple jumps per day possible!! cant seem to find the spec's online atm, but if I recall on the micro 120 the max exit was around 168 and recommended was 120? ... *(dont crucify me if wrong...been a while ) at the time my exit weight was 165 so I was at the top of its range - I would never recommend anyone flying one over a low 1.something wingload... however, other than the landing which bruised the hell outta my ass, ego and knocked the wind outta me - the canopy opened and flew nicely. I had swapped with my gf of the time because I didnt want her on it and was familiar with the characteristics of the canopy... and it still bit me in the ass when idiot me failed to realize at the time that the white canopy above me wasnt the same white canopy I had used twice before... whups Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... Roy, I agree with you that it must be extremely frustrating to have that happen repetitively. However, you can't let one group ruin it for the others. If you repeat yourself 1,000 times and your advice is only taken seriously by 1 person, that's still 1 person's well being that is saved by your advice. *** good point and very true. I gave up on one lowtimer years ago, he knew everything - and I mean everything - in his mind he should have been just given an instructor rating without attending the course or having the required number of jumps *(not joking) , he ignored every bit of advice from all of us instructors (not just me) and was told he could not jump at our dropzone anymore because he was a hazard to himself and everyone, his excuse was we just didnt know how easily skills came to him, and nothing that happened was his fault - he had many many excuses when he left we all sat around and someone suggested bounce bingo... I contacted the closest two dz's and informed them about him, his attitude, his skills and his canopy choice. one dz turned him away after an evaluation dive with which he pulled low and had a really bad attempt at a high performance landing *(with the excuses of why it wasnt his fault), the other gave him the green light to jump. I was off by less than a week on the bounce bingo... I never took the money, and felt sick that I even played - rather than throwing my hands up in frustration after many attempts to get him to listen, I wish I had tried one more time to get through to him even though I know it probably wouldnt have made even the slightest difference. I guess we become jaded after offering advice time and time again only to have it rejected and then seeing or hearing that the lowtimer recieved a lifeflight- or worse. something to think about other than your own safety is the higher the wingload you fly, the easier it will be to run someone down in flight or hit someone on landing - speeds will be higher and your bubble of awareness isnt as big as it will be in 500 jumps so you will be playing catch up, and it can get ugly very fast. the nitro isnt a canopy to be learning on, believe it or not it will probably stunt your learning compared to a more docile canopy at this stage. pull up billvons checklist and see how much of it you can do on a larger canopy - there is tons to learn on a slow parachute that many overlook. I admit that I am a canopy nazi, I have been accused of being a jerk, being overprotective, and deliberately keeping others from jumping higher wingloads to hog all the glory for myself- *(the last accusation made me laugh my ass off cuz he was serious) once you see someone pound in and not get up on a canopy they had no buisness flying it will stay with you forever, and the sound of a human body breaking isnt something you can forget. I would have to go with a older racer as the container as they just look bad - sloppy and clumsy looking. main would be the nova, nothing like not being sure if you will have a canopy close to the ground to spice up the jump. reserve would be the micro raven 120 (*never mind that its what I actually jump) it will get you to the ground safely but is way too touchy on its stall point. I am curious why you picked a diablo though, I have many jumps on them in all sizes from very lightly loaded, to a 2-1 wingload and they all flew and landed well in turbulence and in smooth air. I have done nothing but hop and pops over the last 18 months. You should see the funny looks and hell I catch when I am still in the plane after the low pass exits.*** HA!!! when I got the FX I have now I spent two months or so doing h/p jumps from 7k or so to explore its characteristics *(and to save $$) I didnt go to full altitude unless it was a working jump and got the same ribbing from everyone! my personal fav was "hey, you want us to AFF ya to make sure you remember how to fall stable?" I have some dumbass who apparently has given his credit contact as my phone number - and it doesnt seem that he likes to pay his bills.... I am being called daily by collection agency's who will not quit calling - I also got called by the procecuting attorneys office who was also looking for him but they at least were reasonable when I explained that this isnt his number and they havent called back.
