I do not believe in the bowling speech, as it is normally just an instructor cop out, but there is a time and place for everything, even a speech I don't believe in. *** normally I believe this, however I was present on two occasions that Livendive wrote about if you go back to the first or second page, the first he took the guy out and the student did fantastic till the bottom end of the dive then went bugfuck - ass over teakettle - he did however pull his main, which ended up with him wrapped with lines... his RSL saved his life... but... it took its time in doing so... i was on the ground watching, it was a sunset dive, I remember saying boy, they are getting all the dive time they can... ok, there goes the student as I watched what I thought was a student deployment.....HOLY FUCK THATS DAVE!!! as the student plummeted lower... he chased the student to 2k...actually I believe he went quite a bit lower in an attempt to save him before saving himself... the second was boy wonder... a nice guy, dont get me wrong, but damn he thought he knew everything... during a break in the first jump course I came back to find him there teaching the students... I dont believe in embarrassing someone in front of others but I lost it there... The staff had misgivings about him and his abilities but we figured we just hadnt "clicked" just yet, so we continued working with him till I put him out on a 10 second delay and watched him fall out of sight from 5.5k - I regularly got bitched out for putting students out higher (usually 500-1000') than the dz norm, I figure altitude is cheaper than the paperwork needed after an accident.. he had a slow right turn, but was otherwise stable, I watched him till i lost sight of him) he pulled at the same time his cypress fired... his excuse was he had a radical spin and couldnt find his handles...nowhere did he say " I fucked up" making mistakes happens... if you live through them and learn from them ok, but if you make mistakes and its not "your fault" then your a dumbass and you need to take up golf (tug) he got the speech from the dzo who was very shaken up - and within I belive 3 weeks he bounced and got a lifeflight from the competition dz who we had contacted about him... I had a student named Charles who moved to Atlanta *(Hi Gumby) , had one hell of an arch, he could do a backbend standing on the ground and put his hands between his feet... his fall range was huge - mine is big - I can go fast, I can go very slow, but he could both outfloat me and unless I transitioned to head down he could fall faster. if you flatten out you fall slower, arch more, fall faster - its something that will come with practice. one of the best things I have seen on this site was and I dont recall who wrote it or who it was attributed to.... *(paraphrasing) high time jumpers still make mistakes, they just fix them fast enough so you cant see them... keep at it, you'll get there

Students lack of judgement? When did standing up and not being intimidated by gangs become a bad thing? Crazy *** us white folk, cracker, honky, white bread peoples are supposed to still carry the guilt of our ancestors for their actions against those colored folks - didnt you get the memo? Missouri SWAT team kills pitbull and shoots....a fuckin' Corgi?
D22369 replied to DJL's topic in Speakers Corner
its understandable but sad that they shot and killed the pitbull they are a fantastic breed but do what they are taught - they are a powerful animal, but can you explain the corgi? this is not a danger to an adult - next thing you hear about is swat taking out teacup poodles cuz they fear for their shoelaces. someone was a bit triggerhappy Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... People that don't jump often.
D22369 replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
my first year I logged 11 jumps which was hard to do due to money issues - second year I logged 3 prior to breaking my leg which sidelined me till my 3rd year which gave me a year to accumulated a nice amount of credit on the dz books by packing student rigs which I used to jump my ass off - I was lucky with the dropzone I started at I guess, when I showed up infrequently I got none of that sarcasm you have experienced at yours. heh, I get the humorous sarcasm now... due to not spending every day at the dz, If I show up every once in a while I get hugs/ high fives and the inevitable.... "are ya here for the first jump course or a tandem? which always elicits a smart assed comment from me :-D you have your priorities - they have theirs dont let it bother you, you have jumped out of the airplane and saved your own life - you are a real skydiver, your just not a real current one. life gets in the way of fun sometimes - some people just dont seem to understand that. even more remarkable, his 3rd shot took the weapon out of service - 3 perfect shots in a row at that range... wow Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.

Had one, it was a female about 40 yrs old with extreme ADD, after the training I always went about with what if scenarios with the students in a less formal manner than sitting in the classroom, absolutely nothing stuck with her, the other 4 in the class were your average students and did fine with the questions. I brought it up with the dzo in private and we decided to offer her a tandem but declined to let her jump solo. Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.

Another noob question. Downsizing..
D22369 replied to Prodigus's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
its nice to see someone taking a small step on the path to downsizing, large canopys can teach you a hell of a lot about control - most people skip steps in their quest to be cool but end up fighting to have good landings or to land where they want everytime later on... you may notice slightly faster turn speed, less toggle pressure, more altitude loss on those turns, more drive in winds, but I doubt it will be a drastic change - you didnt say whether its also a different type of canopy *ie semi eliptical/tapered/eliptical that you are going to - these changes from a square would produce a much more drastic change than the square footage would suggest. have fun with it, and for what its worth - nice landings with a bigger chute are more impressive than shitty ones under a small one... I am a canopy nazi and admit it, I dont ever want to see or hear another person hit the ground at the same time as their parachute does simply because they had to be cool and managed to get the instructors/s&ta to give the ok... Roy PS: check out billvons checklist, doing everything on it is a great idea prior to downsizing, I did everything on it with my current canopy but am UPsizing :-D *(getting old is awesome) ---not!!! :-P They say I suffer from insanity.... well... I can only speak for the region I live in but we have a huge illegal issue, they come up here and can make really good money selling drugs, we are not that far off the I-5 corridor which is well known as a drug pipeline, they bring with them their gang ties, and conduct shootings almost on a daily basis - mostly shooting their rivals, but they are shitty shots and tend to hit others quite often. I dont see many blacks or whites go round shooting at people they dont like much around here, sure it does happen from time to time, but those from south of the border dont seem to have the respect or fear of the law as most do. a few years ago some mexican rights group got together and threatened the town with a lawsuit claiming discrimination because about 70% of the inmates were mexican.... gee, if most of the crimes are committed by mexicans...and they get caught.....yup, those statistics would be just about right...however - rather than standing up and stating the obvious.... the spineless bastards in charge began sending some of our mexican inmates to seattle and elsewhere to balance the population mixture. your article of "systemic racism" is bullshit. some of the dropzones that I worked at had obtained waivers to the landing field size with enough nasty things to run into that being able to rc a new jumper was the prudent thing to do for the first few jumps till their eyes could judge thier glide angle and to make sure they had experienced the flight pattern first hand, most were off the radio by jump 4 at yakima, and depending on the time between jumps off it at richland by 5 or so. I am very big on everyone fully accepting the risks, but with a tighter than normal area I liked tilting the odds slightly in their favor Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... A bit of a sidetrack, but, what do you have to offer those folks who suffer from unresolved issues of anger, anxiety, depression and guilt? *** well.. they recently began printing up new bumperstickers for the masses. Guilt - fear - mass insanity - three cheers for christianity!! my sister had the bumpersticker made up and it wasnt in the window of her car more than a couple days before some nut tossed a brick through it, gotta love the irony... peacefull my ass Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... So the real question is ---- how do we separate this line of logic from mere vigilante attitudes that would manifest themselves in the same actions....... *** How did society get to the point where taking direct action against threats was deemed illegal or 'vigilante' Someone threatening violence and tying up my loved ones is a threat until eliminated - period there is no statue of limitations on my books. the law has been shown to be incompetent and useless time and time again but if you handle a problem your deemed a vigilante and subject to prison. The fucker that got his ass beat after tying up the family... will probably get state assistance now and continue to waste our oxygen while the father goes to jail for something that common sense says should be ok, someone comes into your house threatening violence and you get the upper hand by some peoples standards just because they make it to the street they can yell "SAFE" just like a damned kids game. 911 = government sponsored dial a prayer Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... Situation I never thought of until it happened
D22369 replied to jacketsdb23's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just have to ask, were you kicking to get out of the twists in the wrong direction? I watched a buddy do that on his reserve and after making fun of him went up and managed to have twists and kick the wrong way while filming it. boy did I have to eat crow that day. only thing I would have done differently is to slap the goggles off immediately Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... If they are not doing something that poses a serious risk to themselves or others then there isnt a limit, I had a static line student that took 21 jumps to finally progress to a prcp, once she finally got it she really got it well and went on to become a tandem I. when it became apparent that she wasnt progressing we passed her to the other I's as we all have different styles of explaining things and figured one of us had the answer to kicking her over the rut she was stuck in, it finally worked

"legal" owners *** +1 This is the part that they will never understand and we cannot convince them of. The criminals will get guns because they do not care about laws, it merely disarms the law abiding people. the old saying goes - when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns, guess which camp I will be in at that point. poor riders substitute horsepower for riding ability. straightline speed isnt nearly as satisfying as dragging a knee past your buddy on his bad-ass 1000 through a tight corner on your nimble sub litre bike. horsepower

I believe once the scumbag is found guilty by a jury that that the family should have the right to set the penalty is all. it could be brutal or not depending on the family's wishes, some people would prefer using lethal injection or some other humane way, others may want to put them through a paper shredder feet first.
