I still like the idea i heard somewhere (radio, editorial, cant recall really) add an 'Iraq War Tax' directly to everyone's W2 so they can see EXACTLY how much the War is personally costing them dollar wise... see how the next elections turns out all in all I completely agree... "supporting the troops" doesnt mean giving them an impossible mission (militarily, Iraq is and has always been more of a political problem) then asking them to continue to do 'more with less' at an increasingly heavy op tempo... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Update from B Burke re: SDAZ landing policy
Zenister replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
it is effectively banned. with 270 or better being the 'standard' competitive swoop approach, the ability for a serious swoop competitor to train (or coach) there is pretty much non existent due to the current policy. common bureaucratic tactic really.. Set up enough hoops, forms and conditions that it isn't feasible on a day to day basis then claim you haven't banned anything when in fact you effectively have.. (the NPS is very familiar with this process, you can do anything with the proper permits, so everything is technically 'allowed'. You just cant get permits without a blessing from God, signed in blood in triplicate.. I'll be very surprised if Eloy is more accommodating to your 'average swooper' without a major bank roll.. which means that showing up for a weekend of canopy coached jumps (including swoop approaches) is no longer an option at Eloy without excessive coordination, and/or the additional risks and issues with continually landing off... i can see separate landing areas has alot of support already... and you dont HAVE to have a swoop pond (which Eloy does already) you just need a cleared, dedicated area where everyone is aware that high performance landings are being conducted... Honestly in the End its Larry's ball, Larry's business.. he can do whatever he wishes and the exodus of talented coaches (particularly talented canopy pilots who can no longer practice and refine their favorite discipline at Eloy) will likely continue... Might as well just go ahead and label SDAZ a "Freefall Only" DZ and be done with it... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
true, good catch.. was discussing it over lunch with Navy Officers so "mast" was the term we were using... it was generally agreed that the "US" clearly isnt at war... only the "US Military" is... that is rather sad state of affairs.. when the 'support' offered by the majority of Americans amounts to little more than flag waving and magnetic stickers, and even the most basic honors are negelected... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

"oh look we are no worse than XXX" is not a very credible defense is it? nor is "well it is only business as usual" when there are several clear violations of our fundamental documents Such abuses of power should not have been tolerated then anymore than they should be tolerated now... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

yeeks that is scary.. not a rigger (yet) so forgive the silly question, but is the 'rigging tool kit' conducive to making a 'fitted tool box' like used on military flight lines? Something that has the shapes cut out so each tool goes in the right spot and so make it very obvious when one is missing? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

a letter from a soldier in Iraq read on CNN today brought up a point that has been bothering me for a while... Why don't we fly our flag at half mast for all those lost servicemen and women? Is their sacrifice any less significant than the VT murders? or would it just remind the general public that we have soldiers dying in combat every day and the administration would rather them not be reminded of that fact every time it happens??? Does the fact that Americans are more aware of the weekend sports scores, than the number of soldiers who have died in Iraq recently bother anyone else? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Why we sign off with *Blue Skies*

Same 'Bullit' Bob who still jumps at Eloy? this is rapidly becoming my favorite section on DZ.com ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
How about 500 jumps and 500 mins verses 1000 jumps and no tunnel? that would entirely depend on how the 1000 and the 500 jumps were spent.. the key advantage in the tunnel is repeatability.. you can stop, debrief, correct the mistake, and repeat the maneuver very quickly in the tunnel where as in the sky you have a built in delay. This translates directly to shortening the learning curve.. I've used the example before, in any other sport you would have 500 hours of 'practice' in a very short period of time, and be no where near an 'expert'. In skydiving gaining that exposure time has alot of 'overhead' not directly associated with learning the physical skills. The tunnel is a 'short cut' compared to the previous methods of learning/training. One that brings our sport closer on a par with other sports in available 'practice' time. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Update from B Burke re: SDAZ landing policy
Zenister replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
and rather than do the effective method (the one that costs money) the solution is remove the problem and focus the business on the "other 80%" its not like SDAZ doesnt have the land (or the money) for the most effective solution (separate landing areas) they just dont have the desire or the will to do so... so they take the 'easy way' out... banning... thus again supporting the difference between a club and a business.. a club does what supports the interests of members. ALL its members. A business does whatever the owner wants (ie Makes the most money with the least changes or adjustments.) Clubs put members first, profit second. In Business the process is reversed.. except the jumpers are even farther away from first priority.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
I like 'em. Eragon and Eldest (Christopher Paolini) and all the Harry Potters are good entertainment . . . doesn't do alot towards raising the intelligence level, but they are good entertainment. Also, LOTR is good. Get a library card and they are free.

The new tragic hero of Modernism is the anti-hero.
Zenister replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy is one of the more obvious signs of mental illness.. also you are quite a bit late on the rise of the 'anti-hero'. It has been that way for a while... read Milton, Blake, Shakespeare etc... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -

Sad day for the responsible swoopers of this world
Zenister replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm not thinking of a lawsuit.. I'm pointing out lawsuits can come from anywhere... this policy specifically to 'avoid them' could easily backfire... a more responsible approach would be to create separate landing areas, but that might cut into the profit margins... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
in poker this is called being 'on tilt' (failing to recognize that the situation has changed and playing as if it hasnt)and usually precedes a MAJOR miscalculation and loss of chips... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Sad day for the responsible swoopers of this world
Zenister replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
no where near... a fact that has killed at least one high performance canopy pilot when 'landing off' wonder how SDAZ will feel when they get a lawsuit from a 'swooper death' caused DIRECTLY by a policy that forces them to 'land off' in uncleared areas of desert... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -

I think they were way too lenient on her to characterize it as contract problems... Whatever, I don't care, she's off the TV, not that I ever watch The View anyway. actually its more probable she is getting her own show again.... I wont watch either..but she's not 'going' anywhere... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Update from B Burke re: SDAZ landing policy
Zenister replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Then open it yourself - don't wait for someone else to do it for you. it is under discussion.. i just dont know that I want to tie myself to AZ in such a major investment. as to return? the return is enabling the activity for friends and members. Not profit, adding to your toy collection, expanding your portfolio, or sending your kids to college....as skydiving is a poor choice for any of those, thus illustrating the difference between a 'club' and a 'business' ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
oh yea.. there is a video of Jeffro getting "DD'd" one moment he's surfing along nicely.. the next moment it looked like a giant hand crumpled up his canopy and tossed it aside... no real indication there was a DD present at all... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

When someone is that fuckin hot, it doesn't matter how bad they smell. Kinda like Hippy. cant agree at all... smelling bad can make a very hot chick unattractive.. smelling very good can make an 'average' chick very hot... smelling like dead fish is a downer no matter who you are.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
