Yes, but we are talking about a complete jump? From boarding the airplane til landing canopy? To only focus on the freefall part and say they don't need a altimeter because it's only static line or short freefall is not correct in my opinion. The altimeter is usable during the whole time -

And thats the way I think students should be tought. I don't like talking students down on radio. And only giving students the "bare minimum" because the radio will sort out the rest, is.. I don't even have words for it. It's nice to know the students have radio, so that you can talk them out of something stupid. But to use the radio as "substitute" to altimeter and training is not ok in my opinion. -

I find it odd that you don't need a altimeter for the sub 15 sec jumps. During groundtraning (at least here) we tell students to never lose altitude awareness. And how the heck are they supposed to know their altitude without a altimeter? Sure they are supposed to count, but thats the freefall part. What about canopyride? Are they not supposed to be altitude aware during the canopy ride? In case they get linetwists and a snively opening, how are they supposed to know "how serious it is"? And we all know Mantas and Navigators in the 240-300 sqf at -
I understand what you say but... That would not be a good clue whats going on? Even if the airplane *should* not be able to stall, the pilots should atleast have commented the fact that the airplane keept telling them it's stalling. Just ignoring it because the computer won't allow it to stall sounds like a very bad idea, and I guess it was.

How can one become a pilot of such an airplane and not know what a stall is and how to fix it? When I read this I understan why some are afraid of flying.

I disagree. The winds aloft are necessary for a correct spot. But to work out canopy speed all that is needed is a controlled slow turn. The slowest speed will be read going into the wind, and the highest when flying downwind. It is then simple maths to subtract the wind. By the way this is one of the reasons that I believe this type of learning/playing should be done on a solo exit. Unless of course I have missed something? Ok, go ahed. I'm just basing it on my own expirience. It's much easier with the winds aloft data. Do yourself a favor and get the data from the pilot so that you atleast will have it when you need it.

Remember to ask the pilot for winds aloft charts too. If you don't know the winds up there you can't really read the data

If I read his post correct it will not be faster. He will use the same pilotchute and bag as he used on his old rig. But if he uses the "new" PC it would be "slower"

Little faster than what? You have already jumped with the larger PC and it seems it worked as you are still here. So what are you worried about? It could be that the smaler PC is ZP and your old is F111.

Do not pack unjumpable gear. Seriously! When that happend to me a few years ago I placed the bag in the rig and the rig in the gearbag. I did not close the rig. It has also happend to me when I packed student gear. Wear was found on the bag after I bagged the canopy, I stoped packing the gear put it aside and ducttaped on a big note.

Well, that is probably two good reasons not to use that setup. First that Strong has experimented with it for years, meaning it's not as easy as it seems. And that patent probelm. -

In emergency, yes. In other cases I would give them the spare one that is in the plane, give them mine or ride down with them in the plane -

If you build a normal collins lanyard you will need two pieces of hardhousing. But the collins lanyard is universal but your system does not have to be universal, correct? So you can build a system that has the function of the collins lanyard, but not the universitality (is that a word?). One cutaway handle with one cord going to the non-MARD side. On the non-MARD riser you attach the second cord going trough a complete hardhousing to the second (MARD) riser. So when the first riser is disconnected it pulls the cable disconnecting the second. This will give you the lanyard effect in one way, but not the other. So if by any reason the MARD side disconnects you will be under 1.5 canopys. But it will solve your problem with a two way cutaway handle and will not jam as the picture you showed can, and you can peel the velcro. -

If there is not enough room between the pillow and the hardhousing, when you cut away you might get close to 90 degree angle on the cable which might jam it. Ending the hardhousings in a slight angle out could help this problem. I'm guessing one cable is for each riser? And as you have a skyhook/MARD system it would be bad to be hung up on one riser. How about just using one cable that cuts the non-MARD side then a collins lanyard that disconnects the MARD side? More complex but eliminates the problem with cable jaming and you won't be under 1.5 canopys by accident. -
Just curious as you say he is wrong on all points but down vision, does that mean you can fit a dytter in it?

And I can add the following to. When I did downsize from my 0.86 WL, I did exactly what the OP did. Buy gear that I had to squeeze in every time I packed it. I can replace rubberbands while I sleep now! And having a reserve that was probably way too smal at the time. Luckyly I never needed to use it, and it took me about 150-200 jumps before I feelt ok with that reserve. Smart, No. Would I do it again, No way! But I learnd my lesson. And in the previous thread by Kent, I, and others, tried to help him. But it seems it did not sink in. -

It's not a race to downsize. There is no law that says you have to. This kind of thinking/advice is not useful in our sport. True, but if you would have read the posts he made in the past you would see that is the goal. I'm one of those who did my first 200 jumps with a 0.86 wingload. I agree with you to 100% but I bet my life on the reason he wants canopys that pack smal is because he wants to downsize. It's like telling kids the stove is hot, you can keep saying it til your ears bleed, but there is only one way they learn
