New Container: Icon Pro or Javelin Odyssey?
Hellis replied to Naimanator's topic in Gear and Rigging
you DO give advice and your profile can help give a semblance of creditability to your posts. your post themselves would need to be worthy too though. Yes, the number of jumps is more important than the actual advice. There will always be someone with ten more jumps "who knows so much better" Thats how it works here on DZ.com, didn't you know? And for the record, you could reread the thread before accusing me of giving advice. I have only asked what gear he has now and to not downsize to quickly. And the reason why I did not give advice on Icon/Javelin + all the others is because I have not tried them all. And I don't think alot of those who give advice in here has. -

You assume I am a student although I'm not. As others also pointed out, your profile did say Student. And your account was registerd in July, and you have five posts. This WILL lead to the conclusion of a new jumper. I can admit that I have not either updated my profile in ~1.5 years, but since I don't ask for advice it's not that relevant. However if I was to ask for advice regarding gear I would update my profile or type it in the post. -
experience/comments on sixsixone fullface helmet?
Hellis replied to 5.samadhi's topic in Gear and Rigging
I believe the "visor" is not a plexiglass sheet as you normally have on a fullface when we are talking about skydivinghelmets. The visor on this helmet is probably the "baseballcap" thing sticking out at the forehead. And the reason is obviously chinprotection. -
what happens if your PC entangles with your gopro

Not standard, but PC. I would think you should look at 32" at 10 seconds. -

But was that your first canopy off student status? Speculating here: If he is just off student status he probably jumped a 220/240 Navigator/Manta, and geting on a 150 is a big step. But I agree keeping a canopy for a long time is not a problem, but to downsize past your expiriencelevel just to keep that gear a few extra years is a problem. -

My question about his current gear was because a 150 might be a bit smal? Just as you pointed out his profile states student, and what size have you been flying Brian? Buying a 150 that you want to keep for 4-5 years indicates it's a much too smal canopy for your current level. Just my thoughts EDIT: If you plan to have the same gear the next 4-5 years because you don't jump enough to downsize, then it's a even worse idea to buy a 150. Unless you are supertiny -

how long does it take a rigger to instal a AAD ?
Hellis replied to J0nathan's topic in Gear and Rigging
But then again he is in Spain. They might have other rules. OP But how about you supply us with some info instead? Where are you buying it from? Is it a dealer in Spain? If not, the packjob that you get might not be legal to jump in Spain anyway. I believe you will get much better, more accurate answers by asking you local jumpers, riggers, or dealers -
It's time to open the big can of worms. If a 14 year old does not have the strenght to cut away there is something really wrong. And the same with reaction time, younger usually have quicker reaction time, but because they lack the expirience they usually loose anyway against oldies. But, what is YOUR thought about having oldies in the sport, when talking strenght and reaction time, etc? If I wouldn't be at work I would get popcorn now

I think the Paragliding thingy looks pretty much the same as the one PD uses. http://youtu.be/A8GC3newXQQ

Is this thread about buying new or used gear? If you buy new, it would be dumb to not buy collapsible. But if it's used, there is no real reason to change the existing PC to a collapsible unless it's worn and need replacement.

That is one reason why I have not changed to the ROAM from my current 1080. I need to change battery at least once a day while on the DZ.

True, but I suppose the tests Simon made was not with a larkshead knot. As I understand it he used the band as it's original shape, a loop.
-
Maybe it has a 40 lbs breakforce in the material, but as the rubber band is in a loop you will need 80 lbs to break it? So if you stretch one side of the rubber band it will break at 40 lbs, but when you pull on it the load will distribute on both sides resulting in 1/2 of the force. Just a thought. EDIT: Riggers might chime in here nut isn't that the way the MIL spec is rated? If you look at webbing, for example typ 4, rated at 1000 lbs, thats in one way. Not when you make a loop of it.

Moisture happens on objects that are colder than the surounding air. Bringing your camera up to 12000 feet cools it down and when you fall back to earth the camer can "stay" cold while you decend to warmer air. It can work. But I would be surprised if it does as when you exit the plane the camera is beeing cooled very quick again. But if he says it works, give it a try

Canopy Collision video (thankfully non fatal)
Hellis replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That would be a very bad idea! There was no roofs to land on. Newbie with camera + 2 out = roof landing If you remove the roof landing from the equation, then there is a blank next to the equal sign. Does that mean fatality? MAke sure there is a roof nearby before you get a 2 out -

A thought that has crossed my mind is that it's a 3-way with cameraman. Cameraman falls below/side of formation and he keeps looking at them or trying to "get up" above them. -

As a final word from my side in this discussion. No you are not forced, and should not be forced to jump. But if you don't like the situation step aside and let the others jump, if they want to. Maybe Chris (Skydiver604) is the only one on the load that did not pay attention during the climb and everyone else noted that the cloud base was at 3500 feet, and the top at 5000 feet. Everyone else on the load might be fine with this, when he asks for a new pass every time he sees a cloud the cost WILL eventually go on the slotprices. About the violation of FAR, I can't make any comments on that. I really don't know your rules that well. But yes, I think we kind of agree. My idea is simple, if you don't like sushi, don't go to a sushi restaurant and ask for a new plate because you will get sushi again! -

No why would the DZO or pilot be responsible for YOUR actions? Sure if you ask the pilot or DZO for help, for example: "What height and how thick are the clouds?". They should help you. But it's still your choise to get on the load and to jump. In the civilized world we don't put the blame on, or sue everyone else. Edit to add. If planes has been grounded, thats good. That means someone took the decision to not send up a load that would probably end up in a overcast. And thats exactly what I'm saying. Stay on the ground if you don't feel comfortable. But don't send up loads where you hope for the best on overcast days, and people don't like clouds. -

Maaaaaybeee.... you need to learn how to read? You obviously don't know what 'wall of text' mean since you managed to do it again. Ofcourse there are times when things change during the climb, but most of the times you get warnings before it happens. Clouds building up during the day. They dont just pop up from nowhere. And as in the video, those clouds are wet clouds, the ground looked damp. That means it's not the type of clouds that form quickly due to ground heating. Wind change can usually be found on weather forcasts. If the forcast shows a change in wind and strenght that you are not comfortable with, do I need to type it? Compromising safety is in my opinion having people on the load that does not belong there. If you know that you don't like clouds do_not_get_on_the_load. If there is enough clouds or they are thick enough that you don't feel comfortable around or in them, stay on the ground. What will you do in case the airplane breaks down? Ask the pilot for a new pass because there is clouds? -

Hellis replied to Fallcoholic's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why not?? the ac has to drop altitude anyways, if there is an opprtunity to make a jump SAFELY at a lower altitude below the clouds then why waste all the Jet A1 burned already,,,and I do emphasize SAFELY, if the cloud base is below a safe jump altitude then buckle up and relax for the ride down. After seeing the video I would not have jumped, the first clue "I can't see shit" was enough for me, what transpired after that was a comedy of errors that could have killed both jumpers in the video. I've rode the plane down before because I didn't like the conditions and will do it again. One of the things I like about the DZ I jump at is if you fuck the jump and the DZO sees it or finds out about it you can be guaranteed that you'll hear about it and it won't be sugar coated and it won't be pretty and that's the way it should be. and to the fellow noobs posting on this site try reading more whats posted and thinking about what you read and if you have questions ask your instructors, watching the noobs here argue with the "old bitties" is like watching a 100 hour solo private pilot argue with Chuck Yeager how to fly airplanes, My old man used to tell me "STFU and listen , ya don't learn anything when your mouth is flapping". Are you serious? They exit at 10-12.000 feet, and the clouds are at 3500-5000 feet. How would it be safer to exit at 8000 feet? You would still be above the clouds! If you are talking in general and not in this specific incident, my response would be the same and look up before you enter the airplane. Are you comfortable with those clouds? If not, then stay on the ground! Having people on the loads wanting extra passes and lower altitude because they lack common sense to look up before boarding the plane is not ok. If you have, as your profile states, 3 years and 105 jumps, you should be able to make that call on the ground. If you want to whimp out while you are in the plane, don't put that cost on everyone else to by asking for a new pass. And I have no clue what the rest of your 'wall of text' post is about.
