  1. Agreed, and yet I have heard of several polls that suggest he has attracted a good number of people who have never voted Republican. Well, you don't have to be a conservative on every issue, or a Republican to be one of what the Professor described. But it helps. And he forgot "Sexist Troglodyte." 2. Well, it's not the password to the phone itself. It's the password for the phone to cloud backup (I think). I don't know if that password can be changed without physical possession of the phone or not. I also don't know if there would be enough of a "data trail" to find out who changed it if it can be changed without phone in hand. Maybe some of the tech savvy folks on here can answer those questions. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. I never said anyone shouldn't be fired. But the boss doesn't have to be a dick about it. And I was taught it was not about winning, but playing to win that mattered. And playing fair, win or lose. But it's far, far more about how you treat others. And how Trump treats others, especially those he doesn't agree with, is very, very distasteful. 4. Except that it is noted from time to time in the media that he is well liked by those who work for him... Sure. He treats them well (until he fires them, anyway). But when he says that a protester should be "roughed up"? When he says the Pope is a pawn of Mexico? Saying the Iowa caucuses were rigged? You don't measure someone by how they treat those they agree with, you measure it by how they treat those they disagree with. Kind of like judging someone's "sportsmanship" by how they lose rather than how they win. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. Maybe. Obviously he could have. They can't get in to find out. I'm going to guess not. He and his wife tried to destroy their personal phones. This one was simply left behind in a car. I would take that to mean that he didn't think there was anything to hide on that phone. He disabled the "backup to the cloud" feature. I would tend to think that he left nothing on that particular phone, but made it hard to access anything to mess with the cops. Thoughtful terrorists want to change our society for the worse. The attackers in 2001 certainly succeeded in making air travel a big pain in the ass. "Security Theater" has made very little real difference in in actual safety in the air. Maybe he knew perfectly well that nobody could access the phone and wanted to make the government trample on our privacy rights to get to... Nothing. Which seems to be what's happening (the "trampling" part, not necessarily the "nothing" part). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. No, the phone itself was not owned by the dead guy. It was owned by his employer (San Bernadino County) and issued to him. Link They have a search warrant. They can legally go into the phone and retrieve what ever they want. They just don't have the ability to do so. Best analogy I can come up with is someone who has something buried on their land. Without a warrant, the cops can't come on the property to search. With a warrant they can search, but if they can't find anything, too bad. It may not be there, it may just be well hidden. They can't torture the suspect into revealing where it is. I don't disagree with Apple or Tim Cook on this issue. The idea that the government could force a company to do what they want to do is abhorrent. Anything Apple could come up with to access this particular phone could be used to access every Iphone. The idea that it would only be used by the government and only in this one case is ludicrous. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. And how, exactly, could any US President ever 100% and positively stop any terrorist organization from acting on any other country such as the Vatican? It's almost as if he has no idea of what a President can and can't do or what is even within the sphere of possibility. Well, if he's elected president, then he will torture people and that will stop Daesh. When he stops Daesh, then they won't be able to attack the Vatican. So his use of torture will save the Vatican from attack. Duh. It's so simple. We really need a sarcasm font. He's little more than a schoolyard bully. He's been able to do just about whatever he wants, act however he wants, treat people however he wants. All because he's rich. His behavior towards anyone who disagrees with him shows that pretty clearly. If he gets elected (I really hope not, but I think it's a possibility) he will find out pretty quickly how much (more accurately how little) of that sort of shit is acceptable in the real world. 8. Well, I said it back on the first page. He has a level of appeal to a lot of people. Many are the kind of people who think that "bad guys" shouldn't have any civil rights. 9. Well, actions have consequences. And in much of the world, when you take up arms and defy the government, you end up standing in front of a wall being asked if you want a blindfold and last cigarette. 10. And today Trump said he'd torture people. He says that torture works. Believe him, it works. Except that it doesn't . And it's a crime. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  11. I think I've told this on here before, but you asked. I got home from a week at work and my (then) wife told me that she had gone out and watched her cousin (and my friend) Tim jump out of a plane. I found out that a group of people that I hung out with had gotten together and done a S/L class at a nearby DZ. I said something like: "If they do it again, I'd like to go." So when the group put together another event, I was up for it. At the last minute, they changed it to a weekend that I had to work. But the following weekend, I said to hell with it and went to the DZ (a different one from the previous year) and signed up for the S/L class. It turned out that another friend had been unable to make the group class and took the FJC with me. It was too windy to jump on Sat, so I came back the next day. Tim had come back for a repeat jump and so had a couple other people. So I ended up doing my first jump with some of the friends that I was supposed to take the class with the previous weekend. Nervous, but not too scared, I did my first jump. I don't have to tell anyone on here what it was like. I landed and said "I am so doing that again. Did my second jump later that day. I was waaay more scared in the plane for the second one than the first. And the rest is history. Tim and I are the only two from the group that continued on and became licensed jumpers. Tim got his TI a few years ago. I reactivated my dormant Commercial Pilot license and got my rigger ticket. The friends that put the group together kept doing it once a year. Some people came back for a few repeats, but nobody else kept going. After a few years, the guy that started it all turned it over to Tim and I. By then, we had become members of the club DZ (Wolf River Skydivers) and we had a ball putting it together every year. We had ups and downs, some years were big, some were small. But is was always one of my favorite days of the year on the DZ. WRS closed it's doors a few years ago and we went to another nearby DZ. That place closed last year, so we went down to Skydive Midwest in Racine and switched over to tandems. The DZO is a hell of a nice guy and gives us a discount. This year will be the 16th annual event. And we currently plan on keeping going as long as we can. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. What part of the pack job do you want to reconstruct? John is right, IMO, the only thing that should come out is the RPC & bridle. Personally, I prefer they do the pull, but in front of me. That allows me to control the environment where the reserve is open and the RPC is out. It also allows me to lift the bridle up and see how the bagged reserve comes out of the container. I'd rather they didn't bring it to me already open (but I won't turn them down because of that). Obviously this doesn't apply to a reserve that was actually used. And yeah, offering it to a "New Guy" is a thoughtful, considerate way to help a newer jumper gain some valuable experience. So why am I not surprised who made the suggestion? 13. Well, it actually came from 2 guys, one of whom was not a scientist, just a guy hired to help out. Whether or not Venkman was a scientist is debatable (I tend towards "not"). 15. As much as I hate to admit it, and as much as it scares me; yes. He could possibly be elected. For the past 50 years or so, we have been making huge progress on integration, acceptance and tolerance (racial, religious, sexual orientation, ect). There are still, however, large segments of the population that don't like it. The "Politically Correct" idea has forced them into silence (at least publicly), but they are still there. I didn't realize how bad it still was until Obama got elected. Not all of the criticism of him is racial, but a lot of it is. So Trump comes along and says shit like "Mexicans are rapists." "Ban all Muslim immigrants." Things that greatly appeal to the bigoted xenophobes. Throw in the "anti-establishment" types, who don't want to see any "professional politicians", the authoritarian types who want to see a "strong leader" and the fools who actually believe he is a competent businessman because he's rich. Lately he's been talking about "cleaning up" Social Security. Keeping it for the people who have paid into it, cleaning up the corruption in it. That's going to appeal to a huge segment of people. At least as long as they don't look too closely at the reality of the situation. He's basically playing the same game Jesse Ventura did during the campaign for Governor of Minnesota. He won and was a joke in office (he's still a joke in Minnesota). He would be one of the worst Presidents in history. His international diplomacy would be truly frightening. He can't handle Fox News and Megyn Kelly. How would he handle Putin, China, someone like Hugo Chavez (yes, Chavez is dead, but there are little tinpot dictators with big mouths out there, I just can't think of any offhand )? The question shouldn't be "are we crazy enough?" It should be "are we gullible enough?" And the sad and scary part about it is that, yes, we may well be. 16. Very good points. I guess I haven't heard it sung "completely unembellished" in long enough that I didn't notice the little that she did. Or at least not enough to take anything away from the rendition. But I think that the performance of it before a sporting event is a somewhat different situation than before something serious. 17. ^This. Big time. No confrontation, no chance of him being armed, no "posse" around him. Easy pickings. Everyone complained (legitimately IMO) about how the Koresh (Waco) & Weaver (Ruby Ridge) situations were handled. A lot of people (myself included) asked why there had to be a huge raid/confrontation. A bit of investigation, a bit of patience, a bit of restraint and a whole lot of innocent people (and a few ATF agents and Federal Marshals) wouldn't have died. Personally, I'm very happy the cops & feds are behaving the way they are in this situation. No huge raids, no big confrontations. But the miscreants are being arrested and charged. And I would guess that the damage if the FBI had attacked the idiots would be far worse than what the idiots did all by themselves (which they are likely going to be held accountable for). 18. Are we talking the same Christie who panicked and quarrantined imprisoned a woman against all rational medical advice? And, of course, Cruz panicked and called Ebola the "biggest threat facing this country" at about the same time. I don't consider either of those things anything close to "rational" myself. 19. No kidding. She sang it correctly (no "interpretation") and sang it very well. With all the sillyness, stunts and outrageousness that are an integral part of her persona, I forgot how great of a voice she has. 20. It's an old joke around here. We have a lot of Sandhill Cranes. Enough that they are annoying. But still protected. Some people have been caught poaching them. Some because of crop damage, some because they were actually interested in eating them. The joke goes: The warden asks the poacher "What does Sandhill Crane taste like? And the poacher answers "Just like Bald Eagle." I just reversed it and substituted Whooping for Sandhill because I wasn't sure anyone would know what a Sandhill Crane is. 21. No, I don't have a link. Had no reason to doubt what he was saying. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any further info on this. I googled this morning, also, and didn't see anything about this. I included the original post for clarity.
  22. I may not have been clear on my post. What I meant was: The detonator went off, started a fire and the concussive force from just the detonator damaged the fuselage of the plane. The fuselage is pretty strong, but if the plane is already pressurized, the overpressure from the detonator could have been enough to damage it to the point that it failed after a minute or two (from the concussion, not from the fire). 24. Don't know what it's like where you are, but they tend to stay where they can find food. That usually means open water. Where I live, there's a river nearby. There's a paper mill and a water treatment plant, along with reasonably fast rapids. The heat from the industrial stuff, along with fast moving water through the rapids keeps this section of the river open through all but the coldest of winters. When other stuff is either frozen over or snow covered (prey hides beneath the snow), we can get dozens of eagles hanging out on the river, because they can find food. Once spring opens up other food sources, most go back to where they came from. But it's really cool to go down to the lookout and see maybe 10 or 12 bald eagles sitting in the trees up and down the river. We have a very nice nature center here in town. I'm about 2 miles from it.
  25. Based on that description, my first assumption is that he was a suicide bomber with a "fizzle." Kinda like the "Underwear Bomber" a few years back. Detonator went off, but didn't ignite the full charge. Started a fire and damaged the wall of the plane. After a couple seconds of him being on fire, the damaged wall gave way.
