Would you consider 1st Sunset Load a beer event?
stratostar replied to rifleman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The question is, did you get called on it, as in "hey that your first?" Or did you broadcast that it was your first and then someone yelled ? If one of those things did happen, well then your called out on it and in the time honored tradition, you owe !!! It used to be an honor to be called out on a case, now days the younger crew is a bunch of pussy and all try skirt around the time honored tradition in many ways, pretty sad really. Now if your just a dumbass and asking if you own just cause, well then you owe for just being fool hardy enough to ask... you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

How about asking that rigger why and not us? As was said, find another rigger, unless were talking about a 1970's or some other vintage gear time frame, as the reason they told you that. Not that there is anything wrong with vintage, when it's in the right hands. IMHO it's as simple as you found one of those cry baby pussy riggers who is scared of a little work because it has two pins and not one on the reserve. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

He is a highly skilled and experienced and respected jumper in many circles and he has done the live & drop testing on most the kind shit we're talking about and done so for years, he has a tad bit of a clue of what he speaks. Unlike most the people who get on here and talk a lot of shit about how much they have learned in less then 5 yrs. and how experience they have test jumping reserves and other canopies, he help test and or bring to market or to the military. That what it has to do with this thread. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

And the two you know your talking to one of the people who has done a lot test jumping a great deal of the stuff and has conducted many drop tests, right. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

That is way different, it's called grounding your ass and you gotta be a major fuck up to have it done to you! and yes that did go on back in the day, seen done more then once. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

I know other have done it and it can be done. That said, it;s not a risk I'm willing to take on as an instructor. Back when I was younger I would often throw caution to the wind, over time I've seen and done stuff that has made me wiser and I tend to think things through more now. I also will no longer take obese fat asses on TDM's. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

FAA's new proposed "PLA's" what it all means.
stratostar replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
FAA Extends PLA Comment Deadline At USPA’s request, the Federal Aviation Administration extended the deadline for comments to the agency’s proposed Parachute Landing Area (PLA) criteria to August 27. Skydivers and DZ operators are encouraged to read the USPA presentation and then submit comments directly to the FAA using the e-mail address provided. More comments are needed on this important issue that could change existing on-airport drop zone areas. Please, do it now! DZOs can use the DZ Memo and Survey, first sent by USPA on July 3 and found here, to establish whether their operations would be affected by the FAA proposal. Please send completed DZ surveys to govrelations@uspa.org and DZO comments directly to the FAA, with a copy to govrelations@uspa.org. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
No way would I take him out on a LV 1 AFF. The only way I would consider it was if he was able show in a tunnel he could do it. And doubt that he could, you have to be able to arch and then what do you with the legs flopping around in the breeze? Do you add on some kind of leg braces? Also how you going to do the exit? What kind of AC? Who is going to be strong enough to carry or pick him up to exit? Lots of shit to consider here and the fact that anyone who has been in that condition very long can break bones really easy. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

stratostar replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
And that comment, is why the USPA & I, will have to respectfully disagree with you on this issue. No hard feelings here. Maybe we are just not on the same page here because of typing our thoughts and point of view, and if we were to sit down and talk it over in greater detail, we might find more common ground on this issue? Like I said, please do submit a comment if you wish to have a say, if you don't want a say in this, that is ok too. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

stratostar replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yours couldn't be any worse then all the airports who are telling the FAA to ban skydiving all together. Honestly, many of your comments on this subject sound just like the bitter airport sponsors who hate skydiving and want it banned from all federal funded airports. So yea, send in your comment. The FAA is going to as they please. At least if you comment, well then you got room to bitch or not bitch about it. Those who sit on their asses here and fail to do shit on this, will have no reason or room to say shit about it. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

We'll just have to agree to disagree here. There are a number of current rules and guidance that is not being followed by the FAA, that would be, the rules, standards, FAR, grant assurances, that are on the books now not being enforced. Regardless, have you submitted your comments? you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
You can think what you want, I bet Red @ FCI would disagree with you on many levels to your statements and have the data to back it up, maybe you should call him up and ask him. But what does he know he has only been building, testing and designing parachutes now for like 30 yrs or so now. Would you say my 1993 PD 176-r is not as good as 2012 176PDR? Unnecessary cutaway. Very Dangerous and stupid
stratostar replied to pj_jumper's topic in Safety and Training
Like I said, good job handing the problem at your level of Exp. You hit your DA and reacted as you should have... you chopped it and no one could fault you for that. As for in air rigging... no where in my post did I say "you" should have done that... I said "I" might have tried that, done it once on a batwing 134. Biggest thing to take away is, you now know you work and the system works, the rest you can sort out over a beer. Thanks for sharing your story. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

nice job. Just wondering though, why would you allow a spin to happen while your trying to see what is wrong? All your doing is losing altitude and working time at that point, after all had you not allowed the spin to go on, you pretty much had a open canopy. Not faulting your actions, just wondering. Based on your account, (I've been there done that) I would have not let go of the right toggle and would have kept it flying forward while I looked it over, might have even just re-stowed the right toggle. (my decision altitude is most likely much lower then yours though) you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
By the time you get to a h&P in AFF progression, you should have already done a number of solo exits with stability, the only difference is the exit altitude at that point, it's more mental then anything, unless you've been getting training from one of the fuck heads who just pass people to pass them and give shitty instruction while doing it. If you can't do it by that point in the progression, then you should not have been passed to the other levels, period! you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Because the shit still works just fine that is why! Why go spend a grand on a new reserve when I have a new one, only it's 15 yrs old and a few other that are anywhere from 25 to 40 yrs old. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Nope, because in today's world, your an asshole for not taking someone with most dzo's. I'm like you on the health and ability of some people, for example, I've done a few really fat obese people, mostly ladies. I will no longer take anyone who I have to stuff into a pax HC. I'm a strong believer in the fact that not everyone should jump, this sport is not for every person who walks in off the street, even though USPA has tried to market it as mainstream. Older sr. citizen are easy to break and or hurt for the rest of their life if your not careful. With all the hotshots around willing to take any meat they stuff into a pax HC, I'll keep passing up and letting them have all that fun. Like you though, I'm down with making sure those I take are able to handle the mental and physical aspects of what we are doing here. I was rushed a few weeks ago at a boogie to take a 70yr old lady. While in a rush to meet our load, and training her, she was not responding to trying to squat and set up for exit. The manifest person walked by and I said, I think a 15 min call is pushing it with us, we need more time for training. Guess what the reply was I got back..... If you don't want to do the jump just say so and I'll find someone else! So in today's real world (unless your the dzo) your fucked if you speak up and or rock the boat, everyone talks all this bullshit about safety, yet if you try cover your ass and do the job your hired to do, then all you get is flack and talked down too like your some kind of pussy who can't handle it. I'm all for a test of old and over weight people as well as handicap persons. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
