Skyhook RSL snag on door handle, at pin cover flap
Rstanley0312 replied to pchapman's topic in Gear and Rigging
That was flat out some scary shit! I can not say for certain what I would have done but thinking on it now I would have tried to cut the lines with a hook knife to get it clear..... that was my first reaction when watching. Also..... the fact that it did not activate the Collins Lanyard.... Bill you are right..... one lucky jumper! ????? not sure what you are saying here. I never said they were not being upfront. I was simply resonding to jump tickets being sold using MSL which is what start does..... that's it. Read the post next time and the quote so you get the context right.... Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. The other rip I can recall is Las Vegas (and others?) selling MSL instead of AGL. You mean like this? Yeah....soft landings? How do you do it?
Rstanley0312 replied to shah269's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Brother... I have watched that happen more than a few times and even know a jumper with 1000+ jumps that still doesn't know how to flare properly..... he hits hard everytime. It is only a matter of time before he breaks something. Good for you and I hope you heal quickly! Rstanley0312 - I didn't mean to imply that most Christians use a dartboard to choose which parts they take literally, just that they do make a choice. You seem to believe that your choices were made based on scholarly study; either yours or that of people you trust. You seem to believe that the issues are so clear that you didn't even really make a choice; that it's as plain as 1 + 1 = 2*. That's fine, but the fact remains that there are Christians around the world who disagree with your conclusions, including some who sincerely believe that the entire Bible (KJV, usually) should be taken literally, and they believe in their interpretation every bit as much as you do. Again, those are the people I'd like to hear from. BTW, I think that I do get what you're saying: that anyone who disagrees with you is insane or an idiot, maybe both. (Your words, not mine!) Well it is not as simple as I am explaining it either but it can be if you know whart you are looking at just as it can be to a mathematician becuase he/she knows what they are looking at. Gary...... you are not getting what I am saying. Any true scholar of the Bible would be an idiot to say that Revelation is a literal text. That conclusion simply cannot be reached with any effort in to studying it. Exegetically if you look at the first fact (apocolytic writing) that tells you right away that it is metaphoric. I am not picking and choosing what I choose to believe is literal and what is not. The Bible basically tells you what is and is not by how it was written. Anyone can choose to believe it or not but starting from the premise that you believe the Bible it is fact that some books are written literally while others are not. I am also stating that your idea of a "fundy" or a "Literalist" is skewed. Not many believe it is all literal and those who do need to actually take the time to study what they are devoting their faith to........ just as a person saying that the KJV is the only true and real text..... that is insane..... especially because the original text is Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. It is the same thing. So no I am not picking and choosing like "most Christians" in your opinion..... I am telling you that some books ARE and some are NOT. Still supporting what Bill and I have said ...... arm, activate, etc. the point is it gets to that point above "x" altitude and does nothing more unless a certain pressure is met that activates the cutter. As I said you need to take an exegetical look at it that includes reading the whole chapter. Thought means nothing if it is not backed up by actual study and I was not born in to how I feel or think about the matter either. That is not true.... maybe some but a large percentage of Fundamentalists take the Bible for what it is. If the book is written in literal language then yes it is what it says but if it is Hebrew poetry or metaphoric language than that's what it is. Your statement that a Fundy believes it all to be literal word for word is simply false. Again, back to the whole thought verses actual study..... There is a SMALL group of Christians that are "King James Only" people (mostly Baptist) which is crazy in my opinion but that is not the large majority of Fundamentalists. This I fear may be true..... Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. So, God was being political tactful? No - this is a translation - Read it in Greek and see the difference. Translations are like history books. Each one is, in the end, an opinion. First.... Genesis was written in Hebrew not Greek or Koine Greek (different than modern Greek) it was almost like slang Greek of the time. Second...... I don't see the point in this question? Those who do not believe in the Bible and God are always wanting to challenge it but normally are the ones asking Christians not to discuss it or "push" it on them. This conversation will never end the way you want it to.... the truth is that the Hebrew does say it differently and the original KJV is very flawed. The NKJV is much better. THe most accurate literal translation is the NASB. The point to all of this is you are not going to convince me of anything just as I will never convince you of anything. Just because one believes the Bible is literal does not mean all of it is. Certain books are written in metaphoric language i.e. Revelation (apocolypitic) and very metaphoric. If you really want to discuss and break down the Bible you have to know how to take an exegetical look at it otherwise the argument stems from random observations and thoughts and in most skeptics cases, with a motive to disprove in some way. As for the idea of scholars... there are plenty on both sides. Some even that took the time to get in to the Bible that deeply to disprove it and came out a believer i.e. CS Lewis Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. 10-15 is a general rule but every "canopy" not rig will flare differently depending on what type, loading, size, where breaks are set, length of your risers, etc........... which is why when you have your first reserve ride you need to practice up top if altitude allows. It is a different canopy then you are used to flying. Practice ...... that's what it takes. Talk to your insturctors are your DZ. They watch your landings so their input is way more valuable than asking on the internet.... you will get it Blues Life is all about ass....either you're kicking it, kissing it, working it off, or trying to get a piece of it. That is pretty much EXACTLY what my husband (who is a rigger) said when he found out what happened. He said he would have made the same decision I made, because of this reason. I just had never heard that before. Nice to have some corroboration (not that I don't trust what he says ). That is incorrect and I reccomend you have your husband as a rigger speak with SSK to make sure he understands what actually happens. I think this information is very important. Different AAD's have different parameters for firing. It's important to know what combination of freefall speed and altitude causes your specific model to fire. True I am only speaking about Cypres units which is the only kind I jump with. According to SSK last time I spoke to them, you are wrong. They said something like more than 80% of Cypres fires occurs ABOVE 750 ft. It works like this, if you are exceeding the arming speed at or below 1150ft, then the unit will 'arm' which is to say, it gets in a different mode and ready to fire the cutter. Once it is armed, it will fire when it calculates it is at 750ft OR IF THERE IS A SUDDEN AND SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE CHANGE. Such as the change you can expect from your body orientation changing from belly to the relative wind, to standing up/sitting in the harness, as this changes the pressure situation on your back (where the AAD is located) significantly. Inconveniently, this is exactly what happens as a parachute deploys... So working it backwards for anyone with an AAD who wants a sensible hard deck: you want a fully open main ABOVE 1200ft or you are entering the region of most Cypres fires. So if you have a very slow opening main, at a subterminal exit it might take as much as 600ft-700ft to open, so 1800ft - 1900ft should be where you go reserve instead to avoid your AAD firing as your main sits you upright (below 1150 but well above 750ft!!!!!!!) Conveniently the Cypres manual does not tell you this whole story, so just call SSK and ask them if you want to check. Also, in at least one mode, the Vigil adds 260ft to it's stated firing altitude, as it apparently compensates for some sort of expected error. Not sure who you spoke to but that is NOT correct at all and is bad information. I happen to personally know Cliff who owns SSK and his son Jumps with me and is a good friend. Also, SSK was started by my former DZO and current DZO's father Steve Stewart. I have gone over this several times and Cliff actually gets frustrated that this inaccurate information is being passed around. The "arming happens a said stated altitudes upon ASCENT and does nothing on DESCENT other than read the pressure and fire when at the altitiude and speed the unit is designed for. There is NO arming on descent. The unit is already set to do what it can do as soon as you exit the door. Actually, the Cypres does "arm" on the way up. If you haven't ascended more than 1500' since take-off, the Cyres will not fire even if you otherwise meet the firing parameters. In other words, if you exit the plane at less than 1500' AGL, your Cypres is essentially turned off. On the other hand, you really can't count on it being off either, because it might have "armed" early if it thought it was higher than it was. It's a tricky situation. Read the manual. Everyone. For me, anything below 1500' will be straight to reserve. I do a fair amount of hop and pops and am quite comfortable with how my canopy opens. Actually the expert and student arm at 1500 AGL on ascent and a tandem at 3000 AGL. This is true but the misconception that it is "arming", "thinking" or "loading" to fire on descent when approaching its fire altitude is incorrect. This is what I was addressing and it is a common misconception amoung the community. You are right about not counting on those hard numbers. . Not to mention the very real chance of having 2 out due to an AAD fire (I've heard they arm at 1200', fire around 750??? - not sure if this is true). It's not true.... a Cypres or other AAD does not "arm" at all. It senses pressure to determine speed and altitiude and if that threshhold is crossed it fires. It is not as technical as many believe.
