He has etymology confused with usage. The "homo-" part of the word is derived from a Latin word meaning "the same," so I think he is confused about it having anything at all to do with mankind. That's Greek, derived from homogenes. The Latin, homo, means "man." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

You're going to get jumped on for this, because someone is going to say that this is true for most people who harbor a generalized hatred towards a specific group. My daughter grew up in a multicultural environment, and when she was little, she told everyone that her father (blond) is white and her mother (me, brunette) is black. It made for some interesting times. Nonetheless, after she lived here in Florida for awhile, she developed an overwhelming hate-on for Mexicans, totally as the result of some very specific incidents. This is not racism, it is not prejudice, it is post-traumatic stress disorder. Just thought I'd provide the explanation before someone jumped on the opening. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Hmm, I have yet to see a dictionary that defines "homophobia" as "fear of mankind." He has etymology confused with usage. It's okay, though, because by his logic, a passion for mankind ("homomania") is bad. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

BULLSHIT This teaches us more about how your mind works than it does about the word "breeder". I actually thought that "Cry me a river" was the more telling comment. I'm awestruck. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

The pendulum always swings to the opposite side before things level out. How can you not know that? I've never gotten the feeling that I was looked down on by gays, but I suppose I could be wrong. I guess I owe beer, though, because this is the first time I've ever seen the word "homomania." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

If you go back far enough in history those sorts of societies have existed, in simply sexual terms at least rather than recognized unions. Try the ancient Greek symposium for starters. I was a philosophy major. We touched on it once or twice.

Bearing in mind that I have an unpleasant history with the OP, the Base Zone is not BLINC, but part of a forum that is open to non-jumpers, new jumpers and experienced jumpers. I didn't get the impression that he asked the question because he plans on climbing a tower anytime soon. A base or skydiving wuffo having an interest in jumping is not a bad thing. If misconceptions in the non-jumping population are to be corrected--and doesn't everyone bitch about this all the time?--it will not be so much by jumpers as by persons who do not have an obvious bias towards jumpers. In other words, people who are sympathetic to parachutes are all to the good and curiosity should not be discouraged. I'll agree, however, that his second post makes it sound like he has a chip on his shoulder, and it brought down upon him no more than the response he deserved. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. You're going to have to do better than that. I don't object to being called a breeder. I am a breeder, literally. The use of a mere word does not signify intolerance, unless the word is used in a pejorative sense. I do not detect that if Keith or Narcimund calls me a breeder, it means that they think ill of me for preferring men. (I almost wrote "for being straight" but given what I wrote earlier, I can't really class myself that way, even if for all practical purposes, I am.) Perhaps one or both of them would weigh in on this, in case I've misread everything they've written in the time I've been reading their posts. Y'know, I really do wonder what kind of sexual practices we'd be seeing if we reared children in an environment totally free of sexual bias. I have no doubt that most people would prefer one sex to another, but I really don't believe that most people would rigidly limit themselves to one sex or the other. Maybe that makes me weird. Ya think? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

As in, "Ian, I'm sorry I accused you of being 'artistcalledien.' I was wrong."? What exactly would the right words be? Bearing in mind that it's not Ian I owe the debt to, I don't see that apologizing for a wrong done costs anything. It just balances the scale. So I can make that apology, but I'm still left with the debt. Now what? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

ya i agri with u 100 pecant. what if they have a reading writting problem? does that mean they shouldn't post? Did I say that? Tell you what, there's a guy who posts over in the Base Zone who is about as hard for me to read as a foreign language. His grammar, spelling and punctuation are more than unusual. I take the time, however, because he's very bright, he has a vast depth of knowledge on more than one subject, and he's just a likable guy. On the other hand, if I think someone is a total idiot otherwise, there's nothing like a gratuitous spelling flame to convey the idea that "you're an idiot" without actually saying "you're an idiot." Everyone makes written errors at one time or another, even the best writers, so it's no big deal. But look at my sig. "It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument." And it is. But sometimes you can take a gratuitous swipe at one. If someone impresses me as otherwise bright but unable to convey their ideas elegantly, I'll still read their posts, and I'll even try to help them get across their ideas, whether I agree with those ideas or not. Argument (as strictly defined) is for learning, not for pounding someone into the ground. If you see me pounding someone into the ground, it doesn't have much to do with whether they agree with me or not (there are times when "he who shall remain nameless" has posted things with which I agree, but that doesn't make me like him, and there are times when people I respect and admire post things with which I take serious issue, but I don't respect and admire them any less). I've gone completely off topic now, both for the thread and this side conversation, but what goes on here, especially over in SC, has bothered me for some time, and this tangent is the result. I thank you for the opening, but no one else will. Sorry. The straight answer to your question is that people who write well are easier to read and understand, and they are more likely to have their posts read. That doesn't mean that the less gifted in that regard should not post, but it wouldn't hurt for them to give some attention to the way they convey their ideas. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. You completely missed the point. In a gay world, straights would be just as likely to be discriminated against if the gays had not experienced it themselves (If they had always been the majority). That is the 'tables turned' hypothetical. It is not that hard a thing to understand. Didnt' anyone see that movie with Travolta where whites were the minority? Can we just agree that there are two different issues here? The first is that, currently, straights are treated far more respectfully by gays (as to sexual preference) than vice versa. The second is that minorities, by definition, are always discriminated against to varying degrees. (Usually dependent on the amount of fear they engender in the majority.) Two separate issues. And there is no way to know how things would be if the situation were reversed, except to the extent that those who do not learn the lessons of history...yada, yada, yada. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Oh, so that's why we're referred to as "Breeders". I always wondered. Thanks for pointing that out. mh 'Breeders' is only a derogatory comment if you take it that way. We also refer to ourselves as non-breeders. Are we degrading ourselves too? So by your logic, the term "Nigger" is only derogatory if blacks take it that way, right? "Nigger" for many years was used in a derogatory way. In the present day, it is not derogatory in some contexts, and it remains derogatory in others. I cannot see how "breeders" is any more derogatory than "straights," and neither word has an oppressive and offensive history to back up the analogy you're trying to make. What's the real argument here? It's not about a mere word, that's for sure. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

I didn't think that was a very good test, marks, but here are my results: " The good fuck" You are 75 fuckable! You're about as fuckable as most people, which is not bad. Actually, it's quite healthy! You know how to act and what's appropriate. You know when it's the time and place for what. And people can use that to see you erotically. It's no surprise that you can attract a good number of people. You're what they want! A realistic babe who knows when to get a bit wild! Yeah, I'd fuck you! I guess the real question is, how do I make use of this if my whole life centers around milking cows? If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Dear Chris, I live with a chronic illness, one that causes my brain to be totally fried if I forget my meds, need adjustment of my meds, or if I'm subject to stress that causes my meds not to work effectively. I know what it is to misunderstand what someone has written or said, I know what it is to feel like the world is upside-down. Usually, I am not aware of just how impaired I am at the time, but only later, when I've been readjusted. It has caused me all kinds of problems all of my life. I'm okay right now, and I'm trying to be very good about not letting it happen again, but one cannot plan for everything, and having been through it on countless occasions, I live with that knot of fear that it will all go south again. Sound familiar? That said, all you can do is keep living, keep moving forward, keep trying. That's the meaning of life in a nutshell. Whatever happens, you have to persevere, because no one can ever predict what the next thing will be. You may fall down and hit your head again next week, next month, next year. But you don't know, and you can't know, if that will happen. In the meantime, you just have to do the best you can with what you have to work with, and you'll know who your real friends are by seeing who takes into account the situation that you're in and who doesn't. Those who don't aren't worth the time you'd expend on them anyway, so it's no big deal. Other than that, I have no advice, but I wish you the best with it. It could be worse, y'know. After all, you're not a sociopath.

I made a stupid bet, btw. I sent Sangiro a PM telling him it was probably Ian pretending to be someone pretending to be Ian. By his own admission, it's something Ian would do. Anyway, I lost the bet, but I wasn't specific about what I was betting. One must make good on these things; the question is, what do I owe? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Wow! That's all I can say. Oh, and "thank you, that was kind." But I don't mean to be intimidating--except to The artist formerly known as Sinker, of course, but mostly he's not intimidated by me anyway --and I certainly don't feel intimidating. It has been pointed out to me on occasion that some of my posts sound angry or perhaps that I was weaned on a dill pickle , but I think that's just my writing style, because while I sometimes feel a little boggled at the variety of thought here, I don't ever sit in front of my monitor with smoke coming out of my ears. And I only have total contempt for a single poster, but I don't think that's a mystery to anyone. I'll work on being better. As I mentioned in the PM, someone who knows how to spell, use grammar correctly and make paragraphs should be posting more, not less. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. This remark gives me a migrain headache. How in the world can you make such a remark? Minorities have, and have had the market cornered on jobs, loans, want me to go on? It is definitely an advantage to be a minority, and a female on top of that. My wife is an HR manager at a large insurance agency, some of the stories she's told me have made me sick. If you go in for an interview for a job and your a minority, you definitely have the advantage over the majority candidate with the same credentials strictly because they'll scream descrimination if they don't get the assignment. RL, do you dissagree with this? Not as you've presented it as to hiring in large corporations, if one is a member of a protected class. And I wasn't aware that sexual preference is a protected class. Am I mistaken? As it applies to how people are treated afterward, I disagree. It's all well and good to have a job, but it's not much fun if you're treated as a pariah by your co-workers. As it applies to how people are hired in smaller businesses that do not have the same regulatory constraints as large corporations, I disagree. I live in a town where a lot of old prejudices are still perfectly acceptable to the large majority of the population, and most of the businesses are small. There are a lot of ways around the current laws, especially if one is not running a large corporation. And in terms of general overall discrimination, well, no one has ever really figured out how to legislate against that. I don't know much about the gay community except to the extent that I grew up near one of the early gay communities. I can't state unequivocally that if straights were in a minority as to the overall population that gays would treat them respectfully, but as to that particular community, I do know that it is true. There's no way, however, to know how things would be if gays were the in the majority overall. But my point was not any of this. My point was that you don't hear heterosexuals "crowing" over straight movies because up until recently, all mainstream movies have been straight movies. And it isn't whining to recognize that by being different, one will go through life subject to a whole host of roadblocks not experienced by those who are considered "normal." As a totally gratuitous aside, and just so you understand where I'm coming from with all of this, my own opinion as to sexuality is that sharply drawn lines in the sand are social constructs. There is no doubt that our sexual preferences are biologically determined from birth, and my own wiring causes me to be attracted to men first and foremost. But for all of that, if you put me in a room with a guy I don't like and a woman I do and said, "Pick," I'd pick the woman every time, no question. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. I could make the same remark about your response to my post. No one knows (Yes, not even you rl) how things would go FOR SURE...unless society was that way. Other than that it is nothing more than speculation....pure speculation. This part I agree with to a certain extent. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Actually, I think there are examples, and I think the only truth is that it's never good to be in the minority anywhere you happen to be. It's the rest of what you wrote above that gave me a headache. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Farm or Ranch You scored 16 out of 40 on urban-rural and 14 out of 40 land intensity. People know you as: The Milkmaid Quote: "You get to not mind the cow smell." Your score indicates that you prefer a rural atmosphere to an urban one and low land intensity. You’re no hermit though; you like other people and, once you start talking to them, other people like you. As far as you’re concerned there is no difference between living in a city and living in a suburb, not that you would want to do either because you’re probably a bit scared of cities in the first place. That is merely a speculative remark on your behalf. You don't know how straight people would be treated in a gay world so you cannot make that remark in good faith. I don't understand all of this "I am gay....hear me roar" stuff. You don't hear the straights rowing and crowing over heterosexaul movies....i don't get it. What's the point. Stop playing the "victem" and be a player. All of this whining is boring. It would take me pages to explain what's wrong with what you just wrote. So all I'm going to say is, "Wow. You've got to be kidding." rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
