Do poor people do things to keep themselves poor.
Belgian_Draft replied to XitXitXit's topic in Speakers Corner
I voted "yes" but there are conditions. Not all who are poor have the capability to overcome their poverty. Someone with severe physical and mental limitations is likely never going to become a millionaire. However, I have seen many cases of dirt poor immigrants coming to the US and Canada, not knowing a single word of the language, and within a few years living in a middle class neighborhood and sending their kids to university, all from perseverance, hard work, and a goal. So my answer is Yes, but not always. It's official; recession is over, but....
Belgian_Draft replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Because I don't think as you do, according to you I don't what I'm talking about. Self-riteous brilliance. Let me see your logic: A) The recession is in full boom or completely over. You are assuming I think it has to be one or the other. The recession doesb't have to be full boom to still be on, it can be barely existing. Even so, it would still be on. B) It will drop off and be rosey at some given time, not gradually get better. Most likely it will gradually get better. C) I have binary logic that cannot fathom things in degrees. Maybe you do, I don't D) Tax cuts, my friends. Could help, may not. If it were easy to figure out there would not be an argument about it. Nor will your personal hate for Obama hence hope for destruction of the US economy and US in general to satisfy your position. Hatred for Obama? Really? Is that why I voted for him? For the third time, do you think the recession is over or not? (Hint: Even if you think it is still going on in the tiniest form, then the answer is NO! If not, then the answer is YES!) I understand perfectly well. I understand that you haven't a clue as to what you are talking about. Let me see if I can make this any clearer by giving you a simple choice so everyone here knows just where you stand. The recession is: a) over or, b)not over I choose b). Which do you choose? Use whatever yardstick you want, i don't care. Just make up your mind. You either think it is or you don't. It really is that simple. Of course what either of us believes has little influence on the economy so don't be afraid to make a choice. I promise your decision will not put the economy into another downward spiral. Say what???? That is in complete opposition to the title you put on this thread as well as being a self-contradicting statement. But I'll give credit where credit is due: By using just 17 words you probably made one of the shortest self-contradictory statements ever and it could have been shorter yet by about 3 or 4 words. Post #6 written by me: For all technical purposes once we have 1 + GDP Q then it is over, but in realistic terms it isn't over until the indicators are somehwere near normal. Hopefully that will be within a year. I'm really sorry you are unable to read. As for the title: It's official; recession is over, but.... Do you understand the inference? You must be a hoot to hang around, the "...but" at the end denotes there is more, not just the literal meaning. By many official accounts the recession is over, just as it was shortly after 32-33 when 2 consecutive tax increases pulled us out of the Great Depression, but unemp lingered on for years, which is why they cal it a 10-year depression. Yep, yer backpedaling. Your OP claimed the recession is over. The only "but" you added was to point out that the effects would be felt for a long time. Simple question time. Is the recession over or not? You've swapped positions several times already in this thread and even in one sentence! Pretty darn entertaining though. The question is basicly whether or not you would want to be vaccinated. That question is "stupid"? OK ,alrighty then. If you say so it must be true! I think that pancakes are "stupid"!! That also must be true! Blues, Cliff The options you gave are "want to be" and "refuse to be". I am indifferent. I am not actively seeking to be vaccinated, will not be pissed if I'm not, but also am not refusing to take part. It is stupid to narrow the choices down to the extremes and leave out the middle ground. You don't know much about how a virus mutates and adapts to vaccines, do you? The vaccines developed to ward off a virus can often become ineffective once the virus mutates. Why does it take so long to manufacture? Manufacturing a vaccine is not like manufacturing a car. Hurry a car and it just pisses people off because of the low quality. Hurry a vaccine and people could die by the hundreds from live virrus injections, allergic reactions, etc. Edit to add: I did not vote in the poll because the question is freakin' stupid. Oh crap, I forgot about that. But I was asking a serious question. Just wanted to read up on any new information, if there was any. Yes. The "Truthers" have conclusive evidence that Obama is NOT any kind of US citizen, but they cannot make it public because it is part of the 9/11 documentation the government is covering up. But it does exist. You'll just have to trust them on that. Judge won’t dismiss war crimes suit against Blackwater

At the very minimum they should be held to the same standards of conduct as US military personel. Hiring private contractors to handle security roles in order to free up toops for front line duty is fine, but hiring private contractors to circumvent established rules of engagement should never be allowed. In order to be in this country permanently you need to be a citizen. In order to be a citizen you need to know the language. You may want to double check the requirements if you dont believe me. Not actually true. You're sort of correct if you're only talking about "General Naturalization Requirements". However, that is not the only way a person may remain in the US. It also doesn't address individuals that may not have learned English as a child yet were born in the US. It also does address the issue of a foreign born spouse of a US citizen that might not speak English. With all the ways we have come up with that allow non-English speaking people to live here in the US permanently, I wonder just how few of our permanent residents are required to know English? Being born here I know I am exempt even though English is the only language I know and would still be exempt even if i only spoke Latin. We live in the USA. The strength of any country is a common language. IMO, English should be the only language used by our government. I didn't realize English was spoken anywhere in the deep south Spoken quite often by snowbirds. I used to have a Babelfish but I soon tired of the cumbersome size. I have since perfected a much smaller electronic version I call the "Babelminnow". Twice the power, 1/5 the size, and no fishy smell coming from my ear.

In order to be in this country permanently you need to be a citizen. In order to be a citizen you need to know the language. You may want to double check the requirements if you dont believe me. Generally speaking, yes. But there are exceptions and in all cases we are assuming permanent legal residence. A person does not need to know a single word of any language to live here permanently illegally. pointless statement. Pointless? Only if you want to ignore the facts. Nowhere attached to the statement was it made conditional on legal status, not to mention the 15/55 and 20/50 exceptions. Good news drunk drivers - your first swerve is free!
Belgian_Draft replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Excuse me, but just where did I say or insinuate I was an expert in the law? As for yourself, are you a licensed attorney? Hell, my dog could study case law for years and that doesn't mean she knows her tail from a gavel. You are still confusing rights with privilege. A warrantless search on private property is an entirely different matter than a tip of a drunk driver on the highway. And yes, the law must find a balance. A balance between safety on the roads and a persons right to privacy in their vehicle on those roads. Spot checks for violations are the norm. Safety checks, weight checks, log book checks, etc. can all be done on a whim. I would call a stop on a tip of a drunk driver falling under the classification of a safety check. Where would you classify it? It all sounds innocent enough, but the slippery slope leads to a traffic stop w/o PC, lies about it if asked, to a rough interrogation, to shoving a toilet plunger up someone's ass to get a confession as with Abner Louima. There is no, "this time" in LE, you must follow protocol and not lie or you are a bad cop. There are exceptions for exigency, so you don't have to wait for a warrant when it is obvious someone is in danger, but an illegal PC stop when you could follow them and wait for them to get out of their car is all you have to do and is prudent. You're forgetting that driving on our highways is a privilege, not a right. With that privilege comes responsibilities and certain concessions one of which is allowing the police to ascertain, to the best of their abilities, the safety of all vehicles and drivers on the road. As one who has lost somebody very close to a drunk driver, I side with Roberts on this. An officer can tell within a few seconds of starting a conversation with somebody whether they have been drinking and if further sobriety tests are needed. Our intelligence has allowed us to keep people alive and reproducing who therwise would have died. Physically we are a much weaker mammal than we were even 50 or 100 years ago. Fortunately a lot of advances in technology have been made by the very people who would have died of natural causes if it weren't for modern medicine. So, in effect, we already have altered our own evolution and have done so quite rapidly. We have made ourselves physically weaker and less disease resistant than our ancestors, but intellectually we are further ahead. Aussie dollar almost pararity with the US

A quick check showed that the US defense budget for 2008 and the US trade deficit in 2008 were pretty close to each other. Both play a major role in our increasing debt. How much of that income does the government take in taxes? What is your sales tax or GST? What is the standard of living? What is the happiness index? What is the state of the nation? I think the aus win in all cats. I don't know....what IS the standard of living? What IS the "happiness index"? What IS the state of each nation? If you are going to compare those stats and use them to promote one nation over another, you need to put those stats out for everyone to see. Simply asking the question does not answer it. I like living here in the States just fine, thank you. No, we aren't perfect but when you Aussies reach perfection be sure to let us know what it is like. The whole moon landing was a lie. In fact, it was so secret that NASA had to find a place where they could a) Film the scenes withe nobody around for miles and miles, b)nobody would ever visit again, at least not for a long, long time and, c)had lots of light. NASA could put a space craft in orbit, but nobody there knew how to change a lightbulb. With these constraints in mind there was only one place that would work...the surface of THE MOON! So they quietly went about their business and put two men up there to begin work on the film stage, but then realized (almost as an afterthought) that they didn't need to lie anymore because they had just landed on the moon. So, in reality, it was only the timing that was a lie. We actually landed there in 1967 and the landing was kept secret until July 1969. See, I got it all figured out. Ain't I smart.

Are you, by any chance, expecting logic from religious fundamentalists? My cat is more likely to write a Hollywood screenplay. Cats are much too easily distracted to write a screenplay. I seriously doubt that. Conspiracy theorists for the Kennedy murder are actually listened to and bring out some good points for further investigation. The 9/11 truthers only make us laugh at their willful ignorance. I feel that if JFK had not been murdered and had instead served out his term(s) in office he would be remembered as an average President. Instead, he was killed while still very popular with the public and has since been raised to an almost god-like status in some circles.
