yes Makes we wonder if those people even realize that you can turn the dang thing off when not in use. Quote "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

There is only one major difference between a 7-cell and a 9-cell: People that jump 7-cells love them, people that jump 9-cells despise them (and vice versa). The only real advice you'll be getting with a thread like this is that you should demo as many canopies as you can and choose accordingly. A good place to start would be the gear reviews. Make a shortlist of canopies based on what you'd like to jump and what's available. Next, contact the manufacturers for info about their demo program. Trust me - you know when you have found the right canopy. The comment about the dots makes fun of FrflyPimpDaddy's annoyance on page 1. Do I condone 'such behaviour'? Of course not..if it's really happening. All I see here are wild accusations without any references to back them up. Kudos to you for filling out your profile but I notice the one you are accusing didn't. All that's there is a username and some email addy. So who IS it that you're accusing? Can you blame me for not taking you seriously? I know knothing about college level ENGLISH grammar pronounkiation or speling - As I go along I just make it up "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

But, er - the ancient post was even signed 'skygirl1' so i wonder what you are whining about? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you are AVOR7's current girlfriend. Oh boy. Drama. Well, it's a difference of about eight dots Anyone else want some popcorn? Strong Lawsuit & 'Defense Fund'
Baksteen replied to tkhayes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's about the money!! Sue everyone... you get a little from this person, and some more from another. It's never about right or wrong or who's responsibleQuote ..or about the victim, it would seem. If they wanted justice they'd have sued the TI. Instead they go after the (perceived) cash-cows. Pathetic. edited to add link for any bloodsucker that might be reading this. I'm very lucky with my current boss - he listens. But I've had quite a few jobs over the years and not all of them were so understanding..you don't become a professor of microbiology for having excellent social skills - at least, in a way you do, but not necessarily towards your employees The direct approach perhaps? One of my previous bosses was angry at me for leaving at 4.30 pm while they came looking for me at 4.45 pm. According to them, "Leaving that early cannot be the intention of this job". I looked them in the eye and after counting to ten I explained that I usually started work at 8 AM. They turned red and said that they "couldn't be expected to keep tabs on at what time everyone started work". I'm thinking to myself that while that may be the case, they sure as hell are keeping tabs on when I leave and decided to remember that for future arguments, but the matter never came up again. Or when I get/got too much on my plate - I work(ed) like hell to get it all done (in order of priority) but I keep to a reasonable schedule. The rest simply gets moved along the timeline. Friday at 6 pm I tell anyone who needs something extra done that 'Monday you'll be the first one I'll help". The sneaky approach? In work meetings throughout my career some ex-bosses sometimes had these "interesting ideas" which had one common denominator: Anyone who is 'current' in the lab just knows it wouldn't work. Theoretical and practical understanding/experience of a technique isn't necessarily the same thing. I used to simply do what they wanted knowing it would fail and seek a solution while the experiment was running. Next work meeting I'd manipulate the conversation into my boss coming up with the solution I had thought of. I implemented the technique as I saw fit after all and my boss was happy with their knowledge. Not ideal, but it worked "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

What is the most common cause for malfunctions?
Baksteen replied to jasonRose's topic in Safety and Training
The latter two factors indicate that the human brain is probably the cause of the most malfunctions. Specifically it sounds like overconfidence, laziness and lack of discipline. and as a result of this, lack of gear knowledge. ============================= Not being from the USA I can understand your statement. What I can't understand is why you have nothing to do but reply to my post... Think about it... if the manufacturers didn't set the minimal safte requirements but instead the USPA standards were the only norm in the US - how would you get the national skydiving organisations of other countries to comply? We'd get a bunch of different things that would be considered the 'minimum safety requirements'. What that could mean in legal terms I probably do not have to explain. .. can standardise international regulations and guidelines. Why would my DZ want to have its people be USPA rated instructors or be USPA members? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Depth has no bearing on that. [hijack] I was thinking of a largeish body of water,ie a lake, where you landed near enough to the shore that you could wade out dragging your main behind you versus where you'd have to swim, in which case the main would drag you down.

Not precisely. The student cypres is set to fire at 1000 feet if you have a partially inflated parachute above you (somewhat slower descent rate). In full freefall it will not fire until 750 feet. Never rely on an AAD - it's your airbag to use a driving analogue. Please don't waste any time trying to get stable at that altitude (less than 2k) Just finish your reserve procedure! Every second is invaluable in such a situation. Suppose you decide to cutaway at 2000k - you only seconds to deploy your reserve. I can tell you from experience that being in the saddle at 1k is very scary...three seconds later and no AAD and I would have impacted on linestretch... Disconnecting the RSL is not that difficult, but PLEASE do NOT do that except in situations you really have to. (after landing on top of a high building and being dragged towards the edge, or after landing in deep water for instance). Taken out of context, that would make a nice sigline Anyhew... :0:0 No jumps for me - but through the efforts of many, all 17 new SL-students did get their first three jumps in on Saturday. It is awesome how everyone did the best they could in making Saturday a succes. Unfortunately the second big student event on Sunday had to be cancelled due to high winds. The plan was to take the advanced students to another DZ for RW instruction from 12k. This weekend, even though even PCMN can't beat the weather, we have shown that despite all the difficulties we are faced with courtesy of ATC we are far from defeated. I didn't tell that OP to quit - just that if they decided that it's the best decision at this time that's no reason not to stay involved.

You are saying that in standard cancer research, iridescent genes are inserted into patients' DNA so that doctors can see where the cancer is with a blacklight? I've never heard of that - maybe you can provide a link? That's not what I meant. Cancer is so complex a disease that there is no 'standard' research, only pieces of the puzzle. But using genetically modified organisms to produce certain kinds of proteins which after extensive further research could be used in humans to treat cancer is definitely possible today. example here. Search for "antibody therapy" or for "gene therapy". In antibody therapy research, cells which produce the antibody of choice are 'immortalised' by fusing them with a cancer cell. The resulting cell is then modified to resemble a human cell so that the patient's immune system will not try to attack the cure which is harvested. What does this have to do with glow-in-the-dark dogs? At this stage nothing, but fluorescence may very well be used to observe the effects of the drug (in test tubes). As to the animal research, I am firmly opposed to "horror experiments" and cosmetics research but I'm afraid that some AR is simply necessary... Suppose we came up with a possible cure for any disease you'd like to name, but only based on literature studies. Would you blindly take it when you got the disease, or would you like the scientific community to try and research any possible toxic or harmful effects? Scientists use mice wherever possible, but no animal is exactly comparable to humans.. for each study the best alternative is sought but sometimes you simply cannot avoid using 'cuddly' animals such as rabbits or dogs - or even recognisable ones like chimps. Cue public outrage. But I can tell you, there may be some cruel AR scientists, but most of them care. I briefly considered to get a certificate that would qualify me to handle animals on the basis that if it had to be done it better be done by someone who cared - but I couldn't. I knew that as soon as I saw a sedated mouse killed - the sound of its neck breaking still haunts me sometimes..
