  1. I played trumpet.... wonder what that says about me?! That you're a musician... Bolas... Just think 'lip tension'. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  2. me neither, now they only let me hang around coz i supply the dz with all sorts of services.. oh, and boys want to have someone to look up to! Only when you're under canopy and they're not. I'd like to point out to you the sigline of one DZ.com poster: "If you can't be a good example, at least you can be a horrible warning" or something to that effect. Edit: Yes, stability issues "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  3. Me 2 Freeflailer... why they even signed you off on AFF - I just don't get it! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  4. Jackson made some pretty good records when he was younger and all his work for charities was at the time greatly appreciated. But I'm thinking the other way around: Don't let the good things he did when he was younger colour your opinion of him - the evils of his later life were much greater. Even if only one single accusation of child molesting is true, that is more than enough to undo any and all of the 'good' things he has/may have done. He was a celebrity - that doesn't (or rather SHOULDN'T) mean he can do as he pleases! Translation: ONE "oh shit" wipes out ALL "attaboys" In the case of child abuse, yes. 6. You're making progress, VD. A year ago noone would have thought you capable of even this much tact and subtlety. Congratulations! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  10. IMO there's a world of difference between 'people you work with' and 'people you work for' The first can be ok, the second most definitely is not. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  11. kinda like the nut bags that may contain traces of nuts "CAUTION: Contents may be hot" on coffee cups. I think the people who sue because they don't know that coffee is supposed to be hot upon purchase (otherwise it's called 'frappuchino' (sp?)) should be put out of my misery. Whatever happened to capital punishment? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  12. Someone showed it to me, once. Since I subsequently did a hop and pop with it and since I jump a Storm, which is known for slow openings. I experienced the sloooooooweeeest opening I ever had, to the point of me seriously considering to reach for my cutaway. 13. AHEM fixed it for you.. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  14. I voted 'not a good idea' since your OP very well may be true, but also is the classic example of what people will say behind the couple's back. (not accusing you of prejudice) No matter if the person who dates their boss merits a promotion or a raise, everyone else will think it's favouritism. 15. It's also very convenient that the guy happened to have his I-phone on standby in his pocket, which after coincidental activation started to record the conversation. Mind you, I don't have an I-phone and don't know how easy it is to access the record funtion without even once looking at the display. Nevertheless, I'm thinking that our esteemed 'victim' in this case is actually a provocateur. 17. How? What is it you do with the bag to get that result? It's probably much more difficult to do that than to keep the lines straight. It is not. All it takes is someone accidently 'kicking' the d-bag while you are looking for that replacement rubber band or even the bag falling off the container where you placed it while arranging the risers and slack. First scenario improbable? You'd hope so, but I once had to glare very severely at people who thought that 'around my d-bag' was the perfect spot to brief their next jump, while I had walked no further away than to my rig, in order to get the pull through I keep in the former ROL-pocket. One of them even stood across my lines, though he apologised when he saw the look on my face. A second example is when a student stepped on my hand while I was arranging stuff into my container (I personally prefer to place the d-bag between the leg straps rather than on top of the reserve when arranging the lines). I went 'ouch'. He gave me a look and apologised: "Oh, sorry - I didn't know that was a hand, I thought I stepped on part of your rig or something", to which I naturally replied that for my hand he could be sorry, but for my rig he would be kicked. Shit happens - you can do everything right and still get screwed. Not only while landing, but also while packing. What did you think was fixable about it? He did say he thought at first he got into line twists. 'sides, there are an awful lot of 'riser twists' in there - but if there were less the canopy might very well be landable..I should know. 18. Funny - I was taught the exact opposite: That more jumpers got hurt/killed trying to get stable before opening their reserve, than reserves ending up with an unfixable mal because jumper cut away and deployed immediately (RSL or no). There are no definite answers.. stick to your training. 21. I'm not, but got that as my result. Pretty lenient outcome for a quiz on a gardening website... I absolutely HATE gardening. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  22. First, nice one for posting that video. It takes balls to own up to our mistakes so that others may learn from it. But we've all been there. Either the beer is calling you across the packing area, or you are simply dying to make that next load, or you even simply are too exhausted to start over again. I too learned the hard way that if I doubt my pack job, starting over is the best solution, though in my case it didn't lead to a cutaway but 'merely' a ridiculously hard opening. And trust me, on a Storm you really have to try hard for that. Your malfunction looks to my inexperienced eye like the D-bag was flipped through the lines while you were packing. At 1'14" to 1'17" in the video, the right side of the line groups look really funky, but on the left you can see that the line groups are wound* around each other (just below the slider). Awesome job cutting away, I did notice that the canopy starteed to dive. That was clearly not a landable canopy and I congratulate you for the way you performed your reserve procedure. BTW practice makes perfect, while making mistakes is only human so don't worry too much unless if at some point in your career you feel obliged to post a thread with the title "when you rig like me, you have to trust your packer!" *I did my best to avoid the word 'twist', which might confuse the issue. 23. First, credits to fasted3 to call me out on the 'mocking faceplants' comment. Frankly I was surprised that it took so long before someone did. Anyway, I have gotten a lot of valuable replies to my OP, some of which I disagree with, some of which I do agree with. The point of this thread, however, was to see how people (both new and experienced) view the importance of standing up a landing. The following quote sums up my own views perfectly: The problem I wanted to address is that when inexperienced skydivers hear 'everybody' talk about standing up a landing as not a but the (fundamental) indicator of canopy skills (or don't even get taught any other way, which I find quite shocking), the inexperienced skydiver might try their utmost to stand up their landing, rather than to land safely. What I would like is the emphasis to shift from standing up the landing as being the indicator for canopy skills to the person aquiring the judgement necessary to determine which type of landing is / would have been appropriate. Please note that while I'm talking about inexperienced skydivers, but that a better description might be 'inexperienced canopy pilots'. On the risk of insulting some people, that would include those who view their parachutes merely as a way to survive freefall and aren't interested in learning to fly their parachutes. For example, I know the merits of sliding in a landing for swoopers, but IMO sliding in can be very dangerous. It IS an advanced landing technique and should never be attempted just like that. Yes, I am an advocating the PLF. Not for every landing, but when appropriate. Don't get complacent - especially while landing.
