Clearly the best situation would be to do as warped, mnealtx, and others have said which would be to educate children as much as possible about the dangers of firearms combined with child safety locks, so we can prevent tragic events like this to keep occuring in the future. I can recognize why pro gun activists would want to abolish certain restrictions on gun ownership but I dont understand why the Child Safety Lock laws are in question. Children at the age of three to five who chances are havent had/wont understand firearm education are the most vulnerable to loaded guns in a home. How can you in good conscience make a sweeping generalization that all child locks should be done away with because of one scenario with extraordinary circumstances. %99.999 of the time the child in question will not be a competent marksman of any kind. If there was no child lock and the child was not a good shooter then they run the risk of shooting themselves and/or the person they were trying to save! I was talking about House Bill H.R. 1096, not the Brady Campaign. This bill will abolish all gun restrictions, therefore I am against it. Suzie Single, as the law currently stands can go out and buy an adequate firearm for self defense. Me being against unlimited guns for everyone has absolutely no bearing on her ability to go out and buy a handgun. You know as well as I do that accidents do happen, particularly with children, and that simply teaching a child not to play with a gun wont always work. What happens when your child (whom you have correctly taught the dangers of a gun to) has a friend over (whose family does not own a gun and subsequently doesnt know the danger) starts to play with it and accidentally kills himself or another? Education wont always solve the problem. Your post makes abosolutely no sense. Suzie Single CAN go out and buy a gun right now as long as she is over 18. She has a way to defend herself from Roy Rapist if she feels a gun is the best option. She has every right to do so. I think this bill has about as much chance of passing as warpedskydiver going to an anti gun rally in San Fransisco during gay pride week while wearing a Hilary Clinton 08 campaign tshirt. The bill was proposed in order for Rep. Ronald Paul's constituents and campaign contributors who are anti gun regulations to be appeased. Bills of far less controversy are shot down everyday, this one has no chance, especially in a democratic congress. I think one of the points in the OP was that this story is not garnering attention. Has it made national news? From my brief research, it looks like all the coverage is local, including an AP report by a local. This seems to be part of a pattern on under-reporting vicious crimes when the assailant is a member of an "oppressed group" and the victims are part of the "power structure". Do a little digging and you'll find a boatload of vicious crimes upon white victims that never get anything more than local coverage. That was actually a typo. Show me the evidence that supports this case is a hate crime and I will change my opinion. Read your own sigline. I want the facts before I draw any conclusions that these criminals did this on the motivation of race. I think it is best that race not be involved in this or any issue. It shouldnt matter whether the assailants were black or whether the victims were white. What matters is that justice is served and that the correct parties be punished in accordance with the law regardless of ethnicity. If something is indeed classified as a "Hate Crime" then that has legal ramifications on the case and should be treated as such. The term shouldnt be thrown around to describe any crime that involves two differing races. I think it "led" to subsequent atrocities because these inhuman animals were looking to take advantage of anything they could get there hands on. I think it is unlikely that the assailants carjacked the vehicle and then had the thought "hey, there white! Lets torture and murder them". I think it is much more likely they saw an unsuspecting couple in the car and thought "lets brutally take advantage of these people because we can just kill them afterwards an no one will ever know." Just because people would assume that whites would do such horrible things on the basis of race does not mean we should assume the same of other ethnicities. Valid, however is there any evidence out there to suggest that this exact scenario wouldnt have played out the same way with hispanic, asian , or even black occupants of that carjacked vehicle? Is there any testimony or indication from the perpetrators of this horrific crime that they targeted the white couple based on race? If not then this act really cant be described as a Hate Crime, which is defined by being motivated to commit a crime on the basis of race. If anyone was sick enough to commit crimes as heinous as those delineated in the article then my guess is that it didnt matter what the race was of the cars occupants. Chances are if the couple was hispanic or even black those monsters probably still would have done the same thing. Amen. It said in the reports that this was incident started off as a carjacking, not just a group of black people looking to torture some white folk. Is there any evidence to support the claim that this was indeed a hate crime (defined as a crime motivated by prejudice against a social group.) and not just a carjacking that led to a kidnapping and subsequent atrocities? I believe the grisly nature of these crimes should garner more media attention(Im really surprised this is the first Ive ever heard of it) however what shouldnt garner attention are the races of the parties involved. I awoke just now to find the thread I started has turned out really good. Some of these guitarists Ive never even heard of before, Ive looked up on youtube and theyre awesome. Im a little surprised to not see many votes for Kirk Hammett and Angus Young so I guess Im the only Hard Rock/Metal head out there. but thats to be expected, old school hard rock (my favorite genre) aint for everyone.
