  1. Actually, I got it under control before it spun up. Still, one hell of an opening... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. Ooops, forgot to mention. I found out what happens when i do not stow one toggle on my stileto. Weeeee! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. 2 (times I've now been blown off by Val... ): 7 : 1 Saturday I did 4 jumps, mostly flying camera for 10-way RW. "got" my first exit, even kept it in frame. :) Sunday I did a 4-point 12 way, then went back to the dard side and did some freeflying, and a rather interesting quasi-hybrid with a real big guy who falls 150mph BTE. I took a 139 Crossfire 2 (loaded at 1.7) for a spin on Sunday, found the riser preasure surprisingly strong, and even more finicky on opening then my Stileto. Nice flare. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  4. That's odd. They used to do it just by showing up, striping down, and starting the shoots... but I guess that gets hard with the bigger groups. Most of the people in the Manhattan shoot got arrested, but the charges were eventually dropped. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  5. To underscore this, I'm proud to announce that I've finally figured out how to properly export a jump-track freefall graph. Take a look at the attache jpeg. This is a jump from last week where after filming a rather interesting hybrid attempt, I deployed at 2,500, found myself in line twists that manifested itself as a spinning malfunction under my Stiletto loaded at 1.6. What I'd like to draw your attention to is the fact that at 2000 feet, while my canopy is spinning towards the ground, the pro-track is logging a verticle speed upwards of 130 MPH - FASTER then standard belly-to-earth freefall speeds. In fact, the verticle speed shows a sharp ecceleration during the spinning malfunction. This needs to be taken with a grain of salt because of innacuracies in helmet-mounted pro-tracks, but the point is valid. Spinning malfunctions under heavily loaded eliptical canopies burn altitude FAST. DAMN FAST. In my previous post I said it MIGHT be desirable to delay deploying the reserve IF SUFFIECIENT ALTITUDE. The attached JPEG reinforces the importance of this. It's arguable that you should ever delay reserve deployment in a spinning mal because you're probably not going to be smart enough to check first, but I posted that previous comment in the frame of outlining legitimate reasons for POSSIBLY delaying deployment. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  6. You can see the full series on Nerve - www.nerve.com You'll need to register, and it's under the 'photography' section. Look for the Nude Adrift features. While certainly not safe for work, it really is all quite tastefull, and well done. The artist created a series of photo shoots, each shoot being one city. Each city is an interesting collection on its own merits. All feature mass nudity in very public places, like downtown manhattan during rush hour. One of these photo-shoots has been made into an HBO special. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  7. Apart from the general lack of punctuation.... well said. Kids don't need to ride bikes, either - never mind the dangers involved. Despite that, somehow we think it's not only allowable, but a right of passage. The question I'd ask to anyone who says no to a cellphone... Why not? Is it the cost? make the kid pay for it themselves. Is it the innapropirateness of using it in school? let it be confiscated. Is it that you didn't have one when you were a kid? Don't be a fuddy-duddy. Deal with change. I'm not the kind of guy that sticks his head into affairs and tells parents how to raise their children. I'm only voicing my opinion here because the Dad asked. That's an invitation for comments. So I comment. Q: how much is this an issue between you and your kids mother? Are you worried that his mother is using the cellphone as an attempt to 'buy' his love, and you're not interested in a bidding war? Are you worried that she's excerting her authority over you? Is this REALLY over the cellphone, or something else between you an his mother? Wether a kid has a cellphone or not really isn't the issue here, is it? If so, why? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  9. I don't know much about the PC9. I can say this: The 101 is a current product. The pc9 is not. The 101 represents current technology. The pc9 does not. The 101 will be covered by Sony's waranty, the PC9 may not be. The 101 is probably being sold by an authorized Sony dealer, the PC9 is probably not. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. That there's a good chance I'll have my dream house paid for next year. That I have skilled inteligent co-workers that look up to me. That I have the latitude to do what I want, where I want, when I want. Yes, I actually worked from a dock this summer. That I have a crutial role in a company that depends on me. That I'm challenged daily to expand my knowledge and understanding. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  11. That is not only amazing, but mind bogling. Is half decent advice from instructors really too much to ask? For anyone wondering about an RSL or not, you might start by reading an article BillVon wrote a few monthes back, Top 5 RSL myths. Myself, after three hundred jumps I experienced my first malfunction, bought an eliptical canopy, and started flying camera. I chose then to disconnect my RSL, because I was in two higher risk groups, and had prooven to myself some basic survival skills. I can think of three reasons that partly support not having an RSL. 1) you fly a highly loaded eliptical canopy known for violent spinnign malfunctions. Given sufficient altitude, you might want a short delay before reserve deployment. 2) you have large electronics mounted on your helmet contributing to the risk of entanglement. You might need to clear an entanglement after cutting away before deploying the reserve. 3) You're doing Canopy Relative Work, and might need to fall away from a wrap before deploying. Those are the only three legitimate reasons for disconnecting an RSL that I can think of, and I only disconnected mine when I hit two of them... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  12. Do I have to pick just one thing? That I went 4 monthes without getting paid. That I had 4 people working underneath me, and had to lay them off. That my boss is the quintecential Pointy-Haired-Boss from Dilbert, only he's worse because he misses meetings and asks me to stall the guy as long as I can. About the PHB thing, he's literally spent over $80,000 on software I've never used. This wouldn't bug me if it wasn't for the fact that getting paid seems to be something I can't take for granted. The amount he's paid on useless software would pay off ALL our debts to current and past employees. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. It's funny, I was just talking about this with one of my co-workers today. We're both thinking of going, but are disapointed because Slash wont' be there... it'll just be Axel. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. Is there anything you DON'T do? Me, heading off to the Home Depot for some exciting shopping. Who says electrical supplies aren't fun? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. Just to add confusion to the water, I believe the Aerodyne Diablo has different ribs in each position. Despite it's straight leading edge, is it Eliptical? I put a similar question to hook: You said having a straight leading edge but tapered tail makes a canopy "tapered". What other canopies beside the Diablo fit this definition? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Wow.... you're the second person this week to do this. I'll say again, this is a big decision and I hope it works well for you. Kinda gives a whole new definition to Timothy Leary's saying 'turn on, tune in, drop out'. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. A real eliptical is exactly that - an elipse. An elipse is sort of a smushed circle. A true eliptical approximates the mathematical shape of an elipse. A true elipse is symetrical along both its X and Y axis. A stileto comes close, I don't think a Sabre2 does. That said, to answer your question of what is the difference between a Stiletto and a Sabre2 besides degree of taper? Well, the difference mostly IS the degree of taper. I understand there's also a difference in trim, as well. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  22. A cellphone isn't a pack of smokes. It's not like starting to use one young will put you in an early grave. [1] There was a time when a family might be lucky to have an electric refrigerator, now many have two, plus a big-assed freezer in the basement. There was a time when a family might be lucky to have a single black and white TV, now most have one in the living room, each bedroom, AND the kitchen. Likewise, in one generation we've gone from one family having one telephone line to most families having at least two, usually three. When I was a kid (not that long ago) it was the norm for 16 year old girls to have their own phone line. Cellphones have gotten to the point where they can be cheaper then a land-line. The wireless nature makes them a great safety tool, or at least a big help when the kid misses the school bus and needs to be picked up somewhere. Just like my grandmother doesn't understand why my parents had 4 tv's, dont' judge your kids adoption of technology by the standards of your own youth. [1] note that although there are reports radiation from cellphones contributes to brain tumors, these have been wild assumptions at best, and have never been shown to be the case in a laboratory. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  24. Actually, I did want them. I assumed the reason you didn't ship them was because they never came in, or something like that. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
