  1. Nope, I don't know whose HDD's they're using, but I'll assume they are Toshiba drives, since they use Toshiba drives in their professional HDD cams. Don't know if you can hack/refit or not, but can't imagine for the life of my why you'd want to when there are other cameras that serve the function just fine, and I'd imagine the cost of the Seagate drives is very high. Add that to the cost of the camera, labor to swap it out...you've got a very expensive system that may well be inferior to what else is available. Why bother?
  2. The 430 is "good enough" if you don't mind not having a flash on the majority of the shots. Takes longer to recycle. Rather than getting into the numbers, I shot both of them side by side, and the 580 at half recycles about the same as the 430 at full. If you have a camera shop nearby, just drop in and try it. BTW, I'm looking for a third 580....great flash. If you see one cheep...I'm there.
  3. If we can get FAA and TRACON permission... wait'll you see what we have for the Utah Boogie in July. It's gonna be a blast. Plus, we have permission from the same farmer to do a cruise either in wingsuit or under canopy over the same ridge and land in the same area. He's a very nice guy, and owns all that land that foots the talus slope. Plus... well...we'll save the plus for the Boogie Announcement.
  4. They were. If you look waaaaaayyyyy off in the distance in the first one, you can see Farnsworth Peak, where we carried off the high altitude jump over the mountain. If you look waaayyyyyy off in the distance in the second one, you can *just* see the southern ridge and canyon that we flew through last week. Next to the shuttle jump, that was my most memorable "special" jump yet. Thanks again for being part of it.
  5. Our precinct is mail-in only. Voted nearly a week ago. My presidential vote won't count, but I'm hoping my local issues votes will count. In our mail-out, there is a complete package explaining the local issues, offering resources to research, and bios and highlights of the judges being continued on the bench. Thick packet, well done, IMO.
  6. -the vladiball doesn't fall at 155 mph unless someone has found a higher density shot? -If someone can't jump with a vladiball at 200 jumps, something is seriously flawed with either the rules or their skillset, IMO. -I happen to feel it's a great training tool for fall rate and flying around. It's a blast to fly with solo and try to keep in frame, and a great way to try out some new tricks and camera angles where you don't want to risk someone else' safety. BTW, note the date in this thread...? This is a *very* old thread (2002) People have been jumping with them for six years plus now. Can it be a distraction? Sure!
  7. Read my post carefully. I can't see how taking a solo jump with a skyball for someone that has 200 or so jumps, wanting to practice relative work and a camera, is a danger to themselves or others. There are those that fly cameras with tandems at 100 or so jumps (we all know it happens) so I fail to understand how a solo jumper, trying to film a skyball at 100 jumps is in danger or a danger. As far as the UK goes, I don't know their rules regarding skyballs, so if I've made a recommendation in violation of UK rules, spank me and put me away wet.
  8. you easily have the clearance to mount stills (assuming an XT-size cam) on the forehead. Heck, with the Diablo..you could mount video on side, video on top, stills on front, and flash (or other device) on the right side (I wouldn't, but you could). It doesn't have a lot of top surface area, but it has a lot of flat area. Best of all, IMO, it weighs almost nothing.
  9. It is. Once it hits altitude, it opens. It doesn't stay closed below its preset altitude. You could just drop it in a jumpsuit pocket before/after deployment if you wanted to. think about it....it's a simple pressure device. Lack of air pressure keeps it closed. On the ground, it is open. in the air, it closes. See a Vladiball jump here This was shot last year. there is a deployment at the end of the vid...it doesn't interfere at all. No different than any other object in freefall; has to be dealt with either before or after deployment. You decide which is easier for you.
  10. Why is that a pain in the ass? No big thing at all. Just deploy, hold it, then band it. I've banded it before deployment too... Either way, no big deal.
  11. An interesting interview with Chris de Bar in which he talks about conversing while wingsuiting, saying "you go right, you go left" to his buddies. He goes on to say that "wingsuiting feels completely different than other skydives." Wonder what the heck he's talking about!?
  12. http://www.history.com/video.do?name=works&bcpid=1612750326&bclid=1612732344&bctid=1614612182 No need for P2P, and besides, you want to stay honest, right?
  13. I have several Vladiball jumps, and it's a blast. Only issue we've ever had was someone once removed the rubber band before the plane got to altitude. Shot was in a jumpsuit pocket and so we simply didn't play ball on that jump. It's a lot of fun. It's dangerous if you don't set some rules about who flies from where to where, how to manage if it goes low, etc. Great training aid, too, IMO. Helps set a fall rate, because the ball is consistent. If you want to practice camera before you have enough jumps...go out and shoot the ball. Fly around it, into it, away from it. It's very steady. Catch it at 5-6 grand, deploy, and band/bag it back up. Great tool, great fun, IMO.
  14. One of our riggers hasn't ever jumped. She's an excellent seamstress though!
  15. You cannot use these in freefall via the HDD system. You MUST use a memstick. I've heard nothing of problems at "low temperatures." Only altitude, and this is true with any HDD camcorder/system, including iPods. The HypEye Pro D works fine with these camcorders. I'm unaware of CamEye having a D connector?
  16. From Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. Watch the first minute of the video (safe fo work) Gotta wonder about the bi-partisanship in this one. Anyone else think this'll help the right-wing vote?
  17. I have a small plastic automotive coupler. looks like a small BNC connector, don't know what it's called, but it's soft and flexible. I'll take a pic next time I'm at the DZ.
  18. You could have a wingsuit judge instead of (or combined with) a wingsuit camera man. The wingsuit judge could radio to the base when the point is complete and the base could do something to signal to everyone else that the point is complete. Obviously this has some disadvantages ... That's effectively what they're doing at Lodi. We'd considered suggesting judges fly with the team, but that doesn't seem efficient. It means: Judges must fly very well Judges use slots on jump/increase cost Gotta have at least 3 judges, so that's nearly another team right there. Video is the answer, no different than what we already do...and the method by which Jarno suggests, coupled with the artistic point or docking point bonus makes the most sense, IMO. This is why you see the "bonus point" paragraph in the rough document. I don't know how judges could measure/verify a 12" slot measurement, and it may be that rather than saying XXX inches/metre, it be that the formation is close "within reason" and evenly balanced/proportioned in distance. ie; tail and centers are proportionally distributed in relationship to the point?
  19. How would you propose this be accomplished on either the judging or competitive side?
  20. Check out Etymotic.com They make wireless, but they're not cheap. But they do sound incredible and are a standard in the production industry.
  21. You're right.. I explained it badly. You're invited to come out any time, however.
  22. Heres more photographic evidence of that~ Thanks to everyone for all the support, checking out the newspaper~ you guys are really bringing it to the masses! great job to all the Flock U crew who made this happen~ cant wait for the snow and frost to clear to fly up there again! Scotty We both know that's photoshopped. We both I don't fly that well.
  23. I have a master template here that I'll update on the website at least once every couple of weeks, if you'll send me a Word doc of your four-way formations, it would be a huge help. More than that, I'm looking for input regarding the font. So far, the biggest feedback is that we don't need to indicate turns, just the formations. Justin and I have been working on the blocking, transitions with input from others for quite a while, but I'm still not happy with how they're coming off. Input on how to best demonstrate these positions would be appreciated, either here or in PM. Thanks for the coupla helpful PMs on the subject, guys!! Keep em' coming!
  24. if the EIS component measures two values at the same point, it will take the lesser value as the base point, if I understand the engineering team correctly. So...a hot pixel occurring at the same time as a lesser exposed pixel, it will make the image seem to be moving. This is occasionally a problem when refractions are common.
