How hard is jumping when snow is on the ground?
wildfan75 replied to mnskydiver688's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yep. Thankfully because we can't put the wind sock up (the ground is frozen), there is no beer line. Jumpers beware of the picnic table and observers beware of the jumpers! -
How hard is jumping when snow is on the ground?

I'm with Jeremy. We've been jumping all winter (with the exception of the two or three weeks when the high temps were -10F). This is my first winter jumping and I was worried about depth perception, but it hasn't been a problem for me (and anyone that jumps at Wissota can tell you about my history of horibble landings and flare issues). The thing that sucks the most is walking through all the snow from the landing area to the clubhouse. -
Me=Self Proclaimed Chipotle Slut!!!! I love Chipotle. There are very few things that I wouldn't do for a chicken fajita bol, hot and mild, cheese, sour cream and lettuce**! Yum! Just thinking about it makes me wet! I don't give a damn who owns it, just as long as they keep the doors open. But one thing is for sure, it is not Mexican food. It's America's version of Mexican food. **I neither confirm nor deny any contractional obligations that I'm sure will be disclosed by a certain dz.commer regarding the opening of a Chipotle in the Chippewa Falls, WI area.

We've got two that jump at our dz. Considering how small of a dz we are, that's a good percentage.

Of course:3:1 I had an awesomely fun weekend!! 2 hnps and 1 four way(was awesome!). My hnp on Sunday was the lowest I've ever exited (2200' and yes, I know that's lower than the SIMs allows me to with a B license) and opened with about 4 line twists. Thought about cutting away because of the low exit altitude but decided to give myself one chance to get her going to untwist and if it didn't start untwisting I was going to cutaway. Had no problems and away I went to a nice, soft, safe landing. Beer owed was for the first time I radio'd someone in. We had Safety Day this weekend and Team Flew-Id gave away prizes and held little competitions (Thank you Karl and Merriah!). One of the competition was the 1000's of jumps jumpers got radio'd in by the newbies. I landed Merriah right in the middle of the landing area!!!

Run!!! Run quickly...away from Dell. But then again, I'm biased. I got thee shittiest service from Dell and as far as I'm concerned, they deserve absolutely no one's business. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2597818;search_string=don%27t%20ever%20buy%20a%20dell;#2597818

Here's a couple from my tandem. I can send more high resolution ones if you need it. Editted to add: And Nate's, my tandem master, first paying tandem. Didn't know that at time.

Wow...we have someone who is so self-less as to "invest" into this sport by diggin into their own pockets to keep a skydiving club (I say club because Wissota is not a commercial dz, and I guess to say dz is to imply someone's living off the profit) running with cheap jump ticket prices so that jumpers like me could start in the first place and continue to grow, and we tell them, "You stupid f&*k. Close the doors". I think a simple thank you would probably do. Bob and Mary have been doing what they do best for almost 20 years, and they do it for the love of the sport, the future of the sport. And they pass along not only their knowledge, but that same passion that they have had for 33 years/11,000+ jumps and 26/13,000+ years/jumps respectively. Bob doesn't depend on skydiving to make a living. He depends on his full time M-F job to pay to keep our planes running, just like every single one of us at Wissota depends on our full time job to pay for our skydiving. We do it for the love of the sport, because it is just that, a sport. I personally take huge offense to your post. You just called me cheap. You just said that I cheapened the sport. Because if it wouldn't have been for Wissota, there is no way that I would have could have gotten off student status or maybe even started (I could have never afforded AFF more less to pay a coach to advance when off student status). I'm blown away that someone would think that I have no business in this sport. It kills me that this additude is out there. I think the worst thing I ever did was sign up for this website, because, knowing that Wissota is not the norm but the exception, makes me sad for this sport I really love. I wish it was like Wissota everywhere. And if Bob would have announced an increase in jump tickets to cover his loss at our annual meeting on Saturday, I guarentee you no one would have said boo about it. I'm just a newbie but I guess I'd like to see more jumpers in our sport that are willing to step up to pack FJC student's rigs than ones that packed once to get their A and now don't know how to pack. I'm sure everyone thinks that I'm bullshit, and every other skydiver that ever posts from Wissota is full of shit when we talk about getting our class A licenses for $740 (2006) with multiple four ways and "coaching" from World Teamers, etc. But I dare anyone to come make a weekend trip to Skydive Wissota (spring, summer, fall or WINTER), spend the weekend skydiving with us and hanging out with us, and then you can form an oppinion. And if anyone would like to tell me then that I cheapen the sport, by all means...you'll be able to say it to my face. Sorry for getting so deep and defensive. I just too that post way to personal...I think it's a female thing. Goes along with having boobies!

It's amazing what you can do with a few changes of clothes, a computer and a blue screen! But seriously...that's is pretty cool. I would love to know his financing secret!

Does one owe beer the first time he or she are told on DZ.com that he or she doesn't have common sense???? -
Of course:0:"1" The "1" is in quotes because technically it was not a beerable offense. The 12" of snow we got put a damper on jumping but I was voted Student of the Year at our annual club meeting. Too bad it is a kiss of death thing. The plaque is riddled with names of students that don't jump anymore. So I started to say my good byes to everyone. Hopefully I'll be able to break the curse!!!

Grandma's Feather Bed!!! Awesome song! John Denver all the way!
-
Ugh! Is that the shit coming our way? We're suppose to get 12" this weekend in the Twin Cities.

Firstly, I totally agree that everyone, regardless of jump numbers, should have a general idea of how everything on their equipment works. But when we have licensed skydivers who don't even know how to pack their mains...how we going to get people to learn basic rigging stuff? But then again...I'm just a newbie, so take it for what it's worth (not much).

Jared is through. Not because he was awesome. Because he didn't suck.

Go to Best Buy, Circuit City or any other major electronics store, buy an antenna, enjoy free reception!!! Use extra money for jumps!! I have never had cable or Dish or Direct TV. I get my TV for free, and you'll even burn calories getting up to rearrange the rabbit ears when going channel to channel. Although I enjoyed watching 90210 re-runs on the newly installed Dish reception at the DZ this weekend, I can't bring myself to waste money on something totally unnecessary.

No, it works for him. The Blake guy (beat boxer) did awesome!!! Editted to add: I might even say he could beat my box anytime (just kidding honey!).

I'm watching. Sundance sucked ass.

We have a guy that likes to fly his powered parachute just north of our DZ. Freaked me out one day when just shortly after the plane took off, I went out side and saw it there. Thought maybe there was an issue with the plane and someone bailed. Also cause issues for our jumpers. Luckily its winter and cruising around at 1,000ft in 10F isn't much fun after awhile. Interesting to see what happens come summer.

Here is my ultimate favorite soup, and it's easy as all heck! Chicken Tortilla Soup 1 1/2lbs boneless chicken, cooked and shredded 1 can (15oz) whole tomatoes 1 can (10oz) enchilada sauce 1 medium onion, chopped 1 can (4oz) chopped green chilies 1 clove garlic, minced 2 cups water 1 tspn cumin 1 tspn chili powder 1 tspn salt 1/4 tspn black pepper 1 bay leaf 1 package (10oz) frozen corn (I used canned) 1 tbsp dried chopped cilantro Put all contents in the crock pot, stir, cover and cook on low 6-8 hours or high 3-4 hours. Tortilla strips 6 corn tortillas 2 tbsp oil Preheat oven to 400F. Lightly brush both sides of tortillas with oil, cut into stripsand place on baking sheet, stirring occassionally until crisp (about 5-10 minutes). Sprinkle tortilla strips and a little grated parmasan cheese over soup before serving. Makes 6-8 servings 268 calories per serving 9 grams fat 25 grams protein 29 grams carbs 68 grams cholesterol I make it every once in a while, and freeze left overs in individual containers for easy meals down the line (if I decide that I don't want it to eat it for three or four days staight...which usually happens).

I did two but my second one was to hold me over until spring when I could start my S/L class. I did my first tandem on 9/17/05. I did it to "cross it off my list", but I never approached it as an amusement park ride. I knew it was a serious extreme thing. About two seconds after I landed I knew it was something that I wanted to learn to do and keep doing. Wisconsin winters can be harsh and didn't want to start in the fall and then struggle through the winter just to stay current and not get anywhere skill wise. But I had to do another jump! So I did a second tandem on 10/22/05. Did my s/l class on 4/22/06, 1st free fall on 5/5/06 and have done 153 jumps since then. I was trying to get 200 done in my first year but the last three weeks of subzero temperatures didn't help. However many you do or don't do...have fun!!!! It only gets better with each jump!

Didn't see one started so I'll start us off...

We got the help that we needed! Thanks everyone. I knew you wouldn't let me down! And I do love you all SEMI-unconditionally!!! Editted to add: I put SEMI-unconditionally because you guys are skydivers. I didn't want you to think that just because I was a blonde I don't know what I was offering as some sort of gratitude for help. I will cook. I will bake. I will get you a beer (just make sure you put the bitch at the end of "Get me a beer bitch!". I will make you a new closing loop. I will pack (as long as it's a 135 or larger 9-cell). But there are some things I won't do.
