High Anxiety - your thoughts please
Brokeneagle replied to A12's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Adam, You're definitely in good company- I was so afraid while I was a student that the closer I got to the DZ, the more I would break out into cold sweats, have terrible stomachaches, and several times even yarked from fear before the planned jump- I had a problem with unstoppable spins on release- thought I was not gonna ever make my dream of flying my body come true- had some AFF instructors that were uncaring and negative , but then, I found a patient and friendly instructor who took the time to help me do the hardest thing of all in skydiving- RELAX and enjoy the freedom-- and I realized that the immeasurable joy of jumping with your friends and the absolute breathtaking beauty of seeing the earth laid out before my eyes was exactly where I belonged in the first place- if it is indeed your desire to be here with us, trust in yourself; you will make it! Always have faith in yourself- you are the only one that knows what you really want- if it makes you happy, I say go for it, Adam! -
I have a beautiful Spectre 190 and have put about 85 jumps on it to date- I bought it used; the previous owner jumped it only 50 times before downsizing- It's been rare, but I have also experienced that same end-of-opening sequence, it actually has swung me back, then forward or out from the side- it feels almost exactly opposite the surge I get after completeing a spiral or set of them; THAT feels like the canopy rocks back, then suddenly dives forward; I used to attribute the opening surge to my body positioning @ deployment- the surge after spirals I feel is probably caused by the change in the canopy's air speed- feedback or additional info, anybody? Hmmmm, I have a Cypres, and use it as a back-up safety precaution (I am wanting in the future to jump with my baby granddaughter, and right now she's only three), but I could not afford to buy it; it was presented to me as a surprise six-month-early birthday gift by my kung-fu instructor and fellow training brothers and sisters, on the suggestion of Dutchboy, in front of the whole school along with the gift of free installation by a master-rigger friend to top it off- the ONLY reason I have one is because they gave it to me. I was taught to rely on my own pull every time and to observe what different altitudes look like during each climb to altitude, but that was many years ago and teaching methods differ widely- some instructors do not stress visual backup- I still try to incorporate visual altitude observance into every climb to altitude as well as sporadically during freefall-

Nope- not yet; , but I practice emergency procedures several times before every jump as well as while on the way up to altitude in the plane, visualizing different types of malfunctions with their proper safety procedure reactions- and I also ask questions of anyone I know who's experienced one- Brokeneagle.

agreed and gives real meaning to the phrase "sick dread" when I think of the casual, calm way he has offered up our children and friends and family to his war cause.... '...we are not a fragile people' I shudder at his lack of compassion for the families of those who will surely be lost... Brokeneagle. Helmet with flip-up lens, any preferences?
Brokeneagle replied to pkasdorf's topic in Gear and Rigging
I am very happy also with my Z-1; it doesn't fog, whatever season, and I can fit my glasses under it if I so desire- it's the only helmet I found that I could do this with- also, the lens is well secured during all types of flying; no worries about it blowing loose! Yessiree, bob- Bob Sinclair is indeed a terrific person!! We were lucky enough to meet him at the last WFFC held in Quincy- he was bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and a veritable walking history book on our sport- enjoyed immensely the hour he patiently shared talking with us and showing us some of the photos and articles he kept in his blue van- he slept under the dadgummed thing in the 100+ degree temperatures we were suffering that year- didn't get to jump with him, but he took a photo with us and signed a previous Quincy jump in my log book- Friendly and talkative, he reminded me of a skinny, slightly dangerous and horny Santa Claus- what a guy!! my first canopy was a solid black Fury 220 with 500 jumps already on it; it had black lines faded to dark grey, called it m' 'stealth' canopy- kept it at first in an old borrowed Sweethog, then got modern with one of the first velcro-retrofitted Dolphins....now I've got a nice ZP Spectre in that same comfy old Dolphin...

(loud whistle) Say, Dutch- what size plane are you thinking of renting? And what days will you be able to take off? If you're taking paying passengers, John and I want to start putting moolah back now- I'm still not much for campin' at the airport- we want to get a room, I'm gonna try to reserve us one- want to share? (BTW, even if you decide not to fly, we're still goin', so if you want to drive, you can still save money on fuel)
