  16. thanks muenkel for thinking of me. i received the news this morning. in the spring of 06 i lost my job unexpectedly. lee told me to come down to FL and work with him for a week for some extra cash. he and brandy opened up their house, fed me well, introduced me to the wonderful jello-j pocker table that week (which i lost horribly at). we drank too much, didn't get a lot of work done, and he paid me way more than he said he would initially. we talked a lot in pm's and on the phone for a while but that died off as i pulled myself away from dz.com. a little while ago he saw a post that i made and pm'ed me saying that it was nice to see me posting and was wondering how me and the fam was doing. it was so nice of him to reach out to me like that after not talking for so long. however, i told myself i was too busy to right back. right now it's the biggest regret i have. the things i admired most about him were what others have already said... he was definitely WYSIWYG. He was genuine. And he was generous. And godammit he was funny. I busted my spleen twice at his house laughing so hard. Brandy, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I wish I could give you a great big hug right now. You've got a lot of loving family here, let them support you. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/95/250148444_6157b5c744.jpg I miss Lee. And JP. Welfare

I think the phrase "completely pro welfare" is meaningless, but I'm giving you an opportunity to explain what you mean. Is there such a thing as "incompletely pro-welfare"? If you don't tell us what you mean, how can you possibly expect a response? quit stalling. i was talking about these questions that you haven't yet answered... Since you insist on living in the past (i.e. the inquisition, now the depression), let's go ahead and look at it... let me ask you some questions John... 1. Why was charity not up to the task during the depression? because people didn't give enough to the right causes. I am unable to read the minds of the dead. The government owes a duty to prevent its people from starving, and should raise money by whatever means necessary to do this. How should I know that? Do you? I expect people who preach Christianity to practice it. The Sermon on the Mount is a good place to start. The purpose of debate is not to inspire others to be like you. No-one cares how much you give to your church. How about telling us what you mean, and how "incompletely pro-welfare" is different? Oh that was nice John. And it tells me how entirely ignorant YOU are of history. lol!!! And it tells me that you do NOT read peoples posts! I'll respond a) when I quit laughing and b) when I return. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...
  21. Like I responded to the poster who wrote “Do the gun lovers think that school massacres are just an unfortunate price that has to be paid so that they can keep their guns?” I think you’re asking the wrong question of what is a significant international security issue, i.e., US-Turkey relations, particularly with respect to logistical support of US military activities in the Middle East. Shutting down access to Incirlik would not be good (to put it diplomatically). As an illustrative example: it would be akin (& equally specious, im-ever-ho) to suggest that because then-Secretary of State Powell and other USG representatives met with Taliban leaders as late as May 2001 and because the US offered >$40M in assistance that Colin Powell or President Bush are cuplable for activities of the Taliban, Of course, they're not. Nor would Speaker Pelosi be responsible for the actions of Turkey or the PKK, which I’m sure you know have been waging a low-intensity effort for separate Kurdish state in Turkey for over 20 years. Has there been serious concern about the potential for a civil war in Turkey for years? Yes. How would the scenario you outlined be in the interest of Turkey’s pursuit of EU membership, which they really want, along with the close to (or more than?) annual $300M in foreign assistance from the US? Is Pelosi responding to her constituents? Yes. Is that the point of a republic? Yes. Is it well-timed? No. Is it likely to be meaningful historically? That’s debatable. Is this an example where being “PC” can be important for international affairs? Yes, it’s one part of diplomacy. If this statement would have passed out of Committee and been voted on by the House in 2000 or early 2001 would it have been as big of an issue? Maybe not. Is the current Turkish government in denial? Yes, it's in their constitution that you can be jailed for mentioning it (& people have been). Is it a moral imperative? Someone else can make the normative arguments. VR/Marg well said. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...
  22. I do love it when history meets politics. Would it be acceptable for such a declaration (or a similar one) to be used as a pawn by the right? No, it wouldn't be acceptible to me and it WAS not acceptible to me either. So there. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...

Since you insist on living in the past (i.e. the inquisition, now the depression), let's go ahead and look at it... let me ask you some questions John... 1. Why was charity not up to the task during the depression? 2. Was the welfare program intended to be a permenant or temporary solution? 3. Does it make fiscal sense to tax people during a depression to finance forced charity? 4. Is the government effective in distributing it's charitable monies? 5. Are you ever capable of NOT trying to insult someone's religion or ascribing nefarious motives to their posts? (By the way, have you ever heard the phrase, "you spot it, you got it?") 6. Are personal anecdotes really meaningless in this debate if they could inspire others to make charitable giving a priority in their lives, thus rendering government programs obsolete? As for you not being able to discern what completely pro welfare means, let me give you a hint... look in the mirror. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...
