Having received both military & civilian training in a variety of ways (Special Forces Q course, Jump School, UWO (SCUBA), USPA Instructor school for IAD, Tandem and AFF) I think I can offer some insight. Looking back at much of my military training a lot of it was as hard as woodpecker lips to weed people out of the program. I noticed when the intent was more to teach and less to intimidate the instruction was less "in your face". If we as civilian USPA Instructors wanted to intimidate people away from the sport and weed out the "bucket list" skydivers we should be as many military instructors are. However, if our desire is to introduce them into the world of skydiving, we should be a lot friendlier, but still able to tell them that golf or bowling may be more appropriate for them. Just my 2 cents worth ... steveOrino

I made my first wingsuit jump today at the sunset load. I used an older birdman that I was "poured into"

Well, good. Maybe, just maybe we learned ONE lesson from Viet Nam. From past actions by commanders and Presidents it appeared that we learned NOTHING. steveOrino -
I'd agree with your first thought, but not your second. steveOrino

I appreciate your perspective on prayer. What is your perspective on the following ... If I'm a good son what type of asking will I do? In other words, if I am a son of God, what will I be asking for? For mercedes and porches or will I ask for God to make me like Christ? This is how JC's brother James responded to a similar question ..." You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures." James 4: 2b-3 steveOrino

It may depend on what you think the purpose of prayer is. It is of my opinion that the purpose of prayer is to make us more like JC than to treat God as some sort of cosmic Santa Claus. It is also my opinion that God's forgiveness does not come apart from an acknowledgment of, and confrontation with, human sin and evil. God does not overlook or ignore our destructiveness … However; God's confrontation with sin and evil is not for the purpose of condemning us. Indeed, it is for the explicit purpose of forgiving us and healing our – and the world's – wounds. It is a judgment of grace. This grace is not earned, but it comes with a cost; not only the cost of Christ dying on the cross, but the cost of our engaging in the practice of repentance. The repentance we practice is not one merely of confession but more importantly we must confront our past. Only when we confront our past will "truth set us free". steveOrino

How often would you be flying a wingsuit? Probably 1-2 times a week before and after Instructor jumps and maybe more during the slower Winter months steveOrino

I'm a heavy guy (5'10" - 230#) I'm an AFFI (30 jumps). TI (500 jumps), vidiot (1000 camera jumps) I jump at a single cessna DZ. Since Birdman Mike Swearingen (sp?) left, there are no wing suiters at the DZ. However, I need a change of pace from always being an Instructor. I'd like to purchase a wingsuit for some solo jumps. Any advice? I've read the stickys. Anybody know how to get ahold of Mike S.? steveOrino

Now that every Tandem Master must be a USPA TI, what purpose does the manufacturer's rating hold? I realize there are some subtle differences between the rigs, but really, is it that necessary? We don't have to have a manufacturer's rating to jump their sport rigs as an AFFI or IADI. It appears to be a way for the manufacturer's to make a few bucks more ...or is all about legal liability? Your "opinion" will be appreciated steveOrino
