Dang, SPOT! I go away to Cancun for a week and come back and read THIS!?? Get well dude and get back in the air soon! SteveO steveOrino

I'm sorry if you took offense to my poll. Your thought about it's purpose never crossed my mind. It was simply one of the many random thoughts that float in my mind on any day. "IF I somehow knew I'd end up being a quad by skydiving, would I quit immediately, or roll the dice one more time and make a jump or quit cold turkey? The thought to keep jumping until the prophecy came true never came into my mind, but I put it as an option since I thought some might consider it. Yes, I LOVE skydiving, and it makes my life enjoyable, and gives meaning to my aging process. However the ability to be with kids/grandkids/wife mean so much more. I salute you for living life under difficult circumstances! steveOrino

Skydiving Tattoo. When should a person be allowed to have one?
steveorino replied to Pegandmeg's topic in The Bonfire
I agree with Bill "Whenever you want. It's your skin. If it's important to you, and you're willing to live with the (potential) embarrassment of some people considering you a poser, then go for it. " I remember a guy in Airborne school (May 1977) who had a BIG band-aid on his shoulder. One of the black hats peeked underneath and discovered jump wings that he got tattooed on his arm that weekend. Boy did they have some "fun" with that guy! steveOrino -
Threw up on first dive, should I call it quits
steveorino replied to BooTheGhost's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I threw up (under canopy) after my first AFF skydive. I attribute that to lots of adrenaline on an empty stomach. When I was getting my Tandem Instructor rating I almost threw up on my instructor/examiner who was riding student after our "hell dive". . "He kept saying, "Phelps, you're not gonna throw up on me!" I don't know if he was asking me or telling me, so I decided to swallow the puke in my throat (yep, it was gross but I passed) After I earned my AFF Instructor rating I had a crazy student. Her poor body position on exit caused us to lose the reserve jump master. She was doing pretty good with me on her main until she decided to go fetal. We tumbled until I pulled for her as she was clawing at my reserve handle. I think I dry heaved under canopy. Again adrenaline. So, you tell me, should you quit because you puked?? steveOrino -
No, argument here. If you do enough AFFs you will probably screw up somewhere. I simply made an observation that the RJM didn't ride through as he should. Then it appeared someone was giving the excuse it was his first reserve JM slot. My thoughts were and remain the same ... so? I'm not asking for anyone's ticket. I simply made an observation of a poor plan carried out by the RJM. steveOrino

116 tandems in 24 hrs (joke thread)

???? World renowned? Uhm, ok. Must be a different world than mine. never heard of him ... her? steveOrino -
Nice ride through by the reserve AFFI ... not! steveOrino

NOTHING, nothing is idiot proof. I use to exit float on tandems and got a face full of drogue from a TI that literally tossed on the step as he left. As a TI I don't toss until I'm stable. Tempting as it has been with "some" students, I don't toss to get stable. steveOrino

Newbie asks for some answers?
steveorino replied to mustang34's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Tandem harness slipping can happen for several reasons. 1) Harness is older and friction connectors are worn 2) Harness, not tight enough upon exit of plane 3) Tandem student has fat legs and the harness cut into the fat upon deployment (we say like jello through a strainer) Nausea is usually a combo thing ... too little food, too much food, combined with adrenaline. Also if the leg straps are too tight or you are hanging in the harness wrong it will cut blood flow, which also can make you nauseous. Tingly hands are caused by hanging in the harness in such a way the leg strap is pressing on the nerves in the legs or arms steveOrino -
That is "some" manufacturer's recommendations. Not sure that was even in place back then as when I earned my D it was 200 jump. steveOrino

I started filming tandems around 300 jumps -- did that and coach until 1000 jumps. Got my TI then Did another 500 jumps and got my AFFI at 1500 jumps. Worked for me. steveOrino

Anyone want a Skittle? I mean AFF rating?
steveorino replied to OldSchol's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Perhaps that is why so many old timers diss the new method. You can retake precourse jumps until you are comfortable, but when you say "game on" You get 4 tries to get 2 sats on Cat C (main & reserve) and 1 sat on a Cat D. In other words Once it is "game on" you got 3 shots to get two Cat C sats. If you took all three attempts to do it, then you have one chance on your Cat D. If you get your 2 sats for Cat C in 2 jumps, then you have 2 jumps to get 1 Cat D steveOrino -
Not as many as in some past years, but the plan was outstanding! We had 5 stations and at each station you drew a card from a deck. Whomever had the best 5 card hand at the end of the day won a free jump! FYI, the stations were ... 1) Line twists from a hanging harness 2) PLFs 3) gear checks 4) emergency procedure with mock up rig on 5) while on a jump, release one toggle to induce spin and look for handles in spin before releasing other toggle. This was done above 3K steveOrino

I have over 1700 jumps. 1000 with camera. I am also an AFF Instructor, and a Tandem Instructor with 500 tandems. I did not add a handcam on my hand as a TI until I had over 150 tandems. I recently started flying a wingsuit. While, with my experience I can handle a suit a little more advanced than other "newbies" I will not add a camera until I have at least 100 - 150 wingsuit jumps. It pays to be patient. The sky is always there. Be patient ... be smart! steveOrino

Doug, if you said that to Jay you did not heed my advice. Remember I told you I asked Michael Wadkins if he was taking it easier on me because I was old and ex-airborne ... BIG mistake!

Congrats DSE for earning your AFFI

Way to go Spot! I knew you could do it! I'd ride main or reserve with ya anytime! steveOrino -
can the cold shut off your camera?
steveorino replied to steveorino's topic in Photography and Video
I probably have close to 1000 camera jumps and while I've had my share of equipment failures I never had one like last Saturday. It was a handcam tandem. Temp at altitude was about 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit. Chill was more like minus 10. My video recorded all the prep and climbout but turned off as we exited. I noticed it off in freefall and turned it back on. I saw the red cam eye light all the way to the ground, but all it recorded was about 1 second as I turned it on freefall. The other TM said his turned off as he exited too. He said his cameye was showing red (record) but got nothing after climbout. Could it be the cold? steveOrino -

Looking at your picture on your MySpace account I find it hard that your average fallrate is 150mph. Either way congrats on lower it and getting back in the air.

First thing that went through my head was "why are you giving him a bowling speech?" I am an AFFI, TI, and IADI, and I never gave one, but if I ever did, it would never be for the scenario you just described. steveOrino

No wonder thoughtful people find it hard to hear the teachings of Christ over the wolf cries of the false prophets. sheesh! At least Hal Lindsey was smart enough to say a generation could be 80 years instead of 40. Of course he said this after 1986 passed, now he has until 2026 for his end time prophesies. When is wrong again he will either be dead or too demented to care. steveOrino

Goodbye "Skydiving Magazine"?

I think it went downhill when they stopped carrying DZ comic. Seriously, that is too bad. I enjoyed it. steveOrino
