Cypres fires at speeds above 78 mph, and up untill now, even the flattest of spins never seem to clock anything under a 100 mph. Slower than normal freefall. But maybe one of you two had some form of logging device on you that jump. Would be interesting to see for sure.. As most info on freefall speeds during (flat) spins seems to pre-date current day wingsuit design in terms of surface area.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I hope you also think about this one when you jump with others. If you expect them to try a similar 'save' (or even if you dont want to, could have a friend do/try that anyways) when you are the one spinning around out of controll or unconcious. Would you want them to risk their life, to try and save yours because you are above that silly safety device most responsible jumpers have and use? Yea..would make two bodies much easier to be found, if they are wrapped and tied together by a reserve bridle JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Met up with Tobi today at Teuge and had a nice 'worldchampions of wingsuitflying meet' (didnt see Justin somehow) and he was all praise for the new no dive, up/down wind leg. It gives a much more true image of wingsuit performance, and also is s much more direct comparison of flying(instead of flaring) skills... Only the speed round didnt seem like the most interesting one, as most people end up doing steep diving all jump, instead of flying. Taking the avg speed from the 2 time and distance jimp, to see who has the highest flying velocity/cruise speed while performance flying seems to make more sense. Having a competition be about the actual flying, and also showing the world a more true representation on what suits can do performancewise is (to me) the purest form in which you could organise such a contest. Granted the high wind+dive numbers look a lot cooler, but as the 500 meter distance difference between up/downwind legs (in low wind) and also taking dive of the equation, showed this year. Its scores more than a 1000 meter less compared to Marls results, which you (tony) also quoted as the actual glide distance. Though maybe less fun to you, I think in the end everyone benefits from a more accurate performance gauge/image of all suits and flyers. and most important, will also enable us to compare competitions from year to year and see the slow but steady increase in time and distance. Which till this point wasnt possible due to missing accurate hour to hour wind information on each comp. Wouldnt you want to compare your score that gets you 1st place over Tobi next year to that of this year without the wind and dive altitude being the only thing that differed? To me it sound like an improvent on all fronts, with 'but I like diving' being the only counter arguement...as fun as (I agree,:) dive and flare may be... Also hope to be at Gransee and Marl next year to join in on the fun! All the best! J JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Drag racing in cars also doesnt use a rolling start JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Technically, if the suits improve, so should the times and distances without the dive. It would be a more true display of the flyers ability (combined with the suit). And flying suits relative in formation is also possible with good performance levels...it would be a good thing to also push that one... It would be a seperate catagory. Not a replacement of the solo flight. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I dont mean adding a 4th challenge. I mean adding a 2nd catagory to the current competition (same rounds, distance, speed, time), but doing it as a formation. Be it 2 way, 4 way or whatever. Would be nice to see some performance flocking JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Would be cool to ad a 2 way event next year. Having 2 flyers be close and having a 3d one on video, to see who can fly a formation with the best speed/time/distance. The no dive/up and downwind legs sound like a great thing to set as the future standard for this competition form. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I ment...getting people to 'downsize in suit, upsize in skills' is a different subject.....as in...another can of worms nobody wants to really open.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
-
I think thats a whole different subject, where many people would benefit from taking off the big suits, and learning to fly a smaller suit at 90% in flocks and playtime jumps, instead of lazy relaxing in a huge suit flown at 50%. If people are shooting away from a formation like deploying canopies, it doesnt mean they rock, it means the formations sucks JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Its publicly accesable...I think its one of those German-blockers...Costyn is installing one on FLB soon as well from what I heard.. Its hard to see in the video, but it almost looks like backflips instead of the 'usual' spins around the center axis lying flat on the back... If so, it seems the lower leg being bent up/back keeps feeding/increasing the spin. But its hard to see this small (and on a laptop thats just not quick enough to play the video at the proper playback speed without stuttering...) JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

One thing that can help in balling up, is actually grabbing your legs with your arms/hands,...takes a bit of strain/effort of your legs.. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Indeed...but suits with a low armwing-root and big legwing are way more prone to these uncontrolled spins, and harder to recover. JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

On most newer wingsuits, both the armwing and legwing extend quite far down. This means that even with collapsed arms, a large armwing and legwing surface area is still exposed. And in an event of a backspin, this means its very dificult to counter the movement with the arms, to fly out of it. A definate issue on suits with an armwing attachment that runs to (or even lower than) the knee like it does on the ..bird series from tony, and the stealth1/2 and ghost from PF. Not sure about the big flockingsuit from FYB (I think the armwing attachment on that one is higher up). But this is also why they are advertised as suits for more advanced/skilled flyers in general. Some of the most experienced flyers have gotten into spins on these newer suits. No reason why anyone else should be immume to that. arch/fly out of it ball up pull main This standard 3 step recovery thats taught in the FFC still works (as you also proved, be it with a reserve pull instead of main). Though seeing as its the legwing that initiates the propellorlike turn, cutting away the armwings can actually be counter-productive, as its taking away more surface area from the arms (the only thing that is able to counter-act what the legwing is doing). But needing arms to reach for a pilotchute and not being in that situation as Im writing this, its hard to say what Id personaly do and try when faced with a spin thats seemingly impossible to get out. So definately good work on that one...and though I think for most people the video will probably more of an entertainment thing than a learning experience, it is a good thing to realise it can happen to anyone. Unstable spin, flatspin. The term isnt important, and not worth the discussion. The event happening and way to recover is. As to the legwing having a cutaway. Could be an option, though Im not sure a huge flag on one leg would be such a great thing either in the event of an emergency. And a partial release of a cutaway in a stressed situation could potentialy do worse, and actually increase the asymetry or asymetrical movement that initiated the spin in the first place. Seeing as both Marl and Gransee are conducted through the wingsuitcompetition.com website, I think it would also be possible (if Marl also addopts the 2 jumprun directions) to link the competitions, and have a yearly 'performance flyer champion' coming out of those two (which would be Tobi this year I guess). Really nice to see that the double jumprun/direction shows more accurate glide ratios. Although of course, its still possible to get lucky with the wind. The 10 to 30km upper winds seemingly made for 500 meter differences between the upwind and downwind runs! But the avg. glide ratios being around 2 to 2.5 seem much more representive for current day wingsuit flying and performance, than some of the 'downwind only' scores. Which in general isnt bad (competition-wise), but it does create quite a skewed image of what wingsuits are able to do performance wise. Timewise, I guess the flyers (doing 90 degree exits) diving into the wind, do get a stronger advancing wind (slightly larger flare) on the upwind track. All extremely interesting stuff! And congrats to the winners! JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

Even if it didnt work, it just gives of this bad-ass sci-fi vibe. Now where does your Ipod go? JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I have seen that in slowmo yes, and estemate the bridle passing at least half a meter behind my hand. Though perspective is a funny thing, and indeed its not a pretty sight. But getting flung away from under the spinning main, Id rather deploy at this stand up/45 degree angle, than trying to get face-down, with all potential instability issues that may come from that one, in the huge wingsuit Im wearing. But thanks for taking the effort of grabbing stills...And glad you liked the video. Any chance at some moving pixels from you on all past events? A lot of good stuff thats talked about online on AN72, eloy bigways etc never seems to actually make it online.. Get moving man;) Start editing and post some stuff... JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I think he's refering to the burble video on US TV that was all over the net recently dude As to burbling (I think its the 'Canon advert' at 5:30 he's refering to), its this new thing called forward speed. I predict its going hit bigtime next year JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

That bad-ass guy is our own mr Macca (aka Zeemax) As to the reserve....I packed it like shit. Opened with about 7 linetwists and spinning on my back. Chopped it straight away (pull at 2500, under reserve at 2000ft (as you can hear by my audible:)). We did do some intentional cutaway stuff for UPT with the skyhook recently. Very impressive stuff (and for that reason, its on the rig Im flying as of next month) Glad you like it! JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

I know that having some form of audible software for windows-mobile, combined with a bluetooth GPS unit, would be something quite a few people would be happy with. Even if its just a voice thingy calling out speeds (forward of downward) in your ear..would be an awesome toy/tool for the performance flyers... JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
