Are you among the “HyperConnected”? (Do you even want to be?)
masterblaster72 replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
I think that's creepy too. I don't want my every move in a building recorded by some computer because I highly value my privacy. It makes me ask the question (some people might think it's kooky) -- what's the next step? A chip in our hands that has a satellite tracking our every move? Sounds crazy now, but with a packaging of "convenience" and "safety," this might actually be an acceptable thing in 10-20 years... 30%, apparently. From the initial article: Brueggemann’s biomechanical and physiological analysis found that from a mechanical standpoint, the Cheetahs were more efficient than a human ankle and could in fact return energy in maximum speed sprinting. Specifically, he established that “the mechanical advantage of the blade in relation to the healthy ankle joint of an able-bodied athlete is higher than 30 percent.” This means, according to the statement, that Pistorius was able to run at the same speed as the able-bodied sprinters with about “25 percent less energy expenditure.” If he put on wheels and a rocket pack, would you see the advantage? This overlaps with my initial idea when I first heard of this runner: his heart has less work to do than the typical runner because he doesn't have any lower limbs to pump blood to. For that reason alone, I believe he shouldn't be racing with typical runners. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a separate event for people like himself. A friend of mine had one when he was in college. Know ahead of time that they're *very* high-maintenance pets. They're adorable though, and you might find it worth it. As stated upthread, make sure they have plenty to chew on. You'll also need to give them periodic powder baths for their fur, which can cause quite a mess. It's probably a good idea to have a separate room just for the chinchilla, if you have that kind of space. You'll also need to let it out of its cage periodically. This is another reason to have it in its own room, because even if you know it well, it may run away from you when it's out of its cage...and they can be very elusive and difficult to catch and put back in its cage. Make sure you close the door to the room before you let it out! Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

High Fuel Prices are Sound Environmental Policy
masterblaster72 replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, how many people continue to think that the environment is a No. 1 global priority. If this is the case, then making fossil fuels expensive is a good way to drive down demand and move toward efficiency. "Ooops. It's causing an increase in food prices as we move toward more sustainable energy." That's not a problem if your No. 1 concern is the environment. So now the price of rice is a big deal in the world - it's doubled in the last few months. Why? Fule prices are big. On top of that, a month and a half long cold snap caused problems, too. But, so long as the environment is a big issue, then these are secondary concerns. So, what is important? The environment - when everything is going well. When everythign is NOT going well, the environment takes a second seat, doesn't it? Why don't we get our priorities straightened out? Well, I agree that our priorities are messed up. I also think that the environment as a priority can be harmonious with the economy, with some foresight and planning. This situation with ethanol/food prices demonstrates poor planning and execution. I just think the premise of your first post is a bit flawed, because high fuel prices haven't hindered people from driving. Also, in order for your point re: mileage to become a reality, car companies need to drastically change their mileage per gallon standards, which they refuse to do, at least last time I heard (perhaps that's changed?). The technology is there, but corporate greed, a corrupt government, and a sheepish consumer population prevent it from happening. Skydiving helped me cope with a breakup that was tough for me to get over and after 31 jumps in 4 days, I felt a hell of a lot better. Not nearly as tragic a situation as yours (sorry to hear about your loss), but yes, jumping can certainly be therapeutic. So if it makes you feel better, by all means, jump yer ass off! I hear ya man. I think the reason is because people eat the shit that they're given, and in large quantities, without putting up a fuss. Yes, people look for the lowest price. The thing is, prices haven't really gone down to the degree that quality has. Which basically means corporate greed rules the day. And consumers take it, and keep bending over, questioning nothing, their minds numbed by unspeakably stupid television programs that they get hooked on. Condoleeza Rice as Possible VP Candidate
masterblaster72 replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
Sure! Who can forget Powell's speech on Iraq's WMDs to the UN in February 2003? It had everything: weaponized anthrax, ballistic missile sites, mobile bioweapons labs, chemical weapons depots, chemical warfare decontamination vehicles... How many of those involved in the run up to the war have shown remorse? Gen. Powell has. How many of them tried to talk Bush out of invading Iraq? Gen. Powell tried very hard. Yes, in the end, he followed orders and gave the UN speech, but, imo, it was because he took seriously his commitment to serve at the pleasure of the President, and felt obligated to obey his boss, because the Office of the POTUS and the Cabinet position of Secretary of State are greater than any individual occupant of either. Which is why Powell is still respected by people from all over the political spectrum -- he did his job, realized he messed up by doing it, and got out of politics. Rice, instead, played an instrumental part in getting us into a war that didn't have to happen, then took a promotion to push a radical foreign policy that has isolated us. Therefore I disagree with your idea that Rice was one of the best appointments to Bush's cabinet. She has done a disastrous and disgraceful job by "following orders" for eight years. I might. Right now, I lean toward McCain. But if he continues with his warmongering talk and continues to align himself with the extreme base of the Republican party (something he historically has NOT done, which is why I lean toward voting for him in the first place), I might just vote for Obama. Under no circumstances will I vote for Hillary Clinton if she manages to get the nomination. Similarly, under no circumstances will I vote for McCain if he chooses Condoleeza Rice (or some other prominent neo-con; let's hope that's just all talk though) as a running mate. Condoleeza Rice as Possible VP Candidate
masterblaster72 replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
And General Powell still has the respect of many moderates for stepping down at the end of the first term. Dr. Rice instead has taken a promotion and pressed a failed, extremist foreign policy that has gotten us into a world of shit. Hopefully she'll do the right thing and stay out of politics after next January. Condoleeza Rice as Possible VP Candidate
masterblaster72 replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
Precisely. Her (along with Bush & Cheney's) policies have been an absolute disaster for this country and have put us under a mountain of debt. Yes, she has "credentials"...but those credentials haven't helped her make sound decisions in regard to foreign policy. When someone's policies have been disastrous as security advisor and as secretary of state, the last thing I would want that person to be is president. McCain would certainly lose my vote if he chooses her as a running mate. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
Condoleeza Rice as Possible VP Candidate
masterblaster72 replied to masterblaster72's topic in Speakers Corner
There's a lot of buzz in the media these days regarding the possibility of her joining the McCain ticket. How in f.ck is it that a complete liar and utter failure like Condi Rice can even be considered for a VP slot? Would the Republican party be playing the race (counter-Obama) card by nominating her as VP? Or does she have some real credentials (other than a doctorate degree and having been on the board of Chevron) and accomplishments to justify a possible presidency in the event that McCain dies during his term? Honest question here: is there something that Michael Moore distorted in this interview with Charlton Heston from Bowling for Columbine? I know Moore has a habit of editing to skew things to his views, but I found Mr. Heston's answers in this interview so painfully weak that the only way I'll ever remember him is this way...hardly a way I'd want to be remembered.
