    Interesting coincidence -- I was watching a documentary yesterday on the exploitation of foreign workers constructing buildings in Dubai. It amounts to modern-day slavery. Panorama - Slumdogs and Millionaires (this, after the ABC News piece from 2007 where the King's spokesperson acknowledged there are problems and said he intended to do something about them: Dubai's Dirty Little Secret) Also, I read this in BBC News today. Yikes. 'Towering inferno' fears for Gulf's high-rise blocks No way in hell would I give Dubai a penny of my business.     Well, if the wife doesn't know he's been convicted (or merely arrested) for soliciting, there are a lot of problems. And given the potential STDs from unregulated sex trade (the high end hookers aren't the ones getting busted, typically), she has every right to drop his ass. Of course she does -- I agree 100%. However I still don't think the public shaming is justified, and he would have likely paid the marital consequences anyhow without the outing on tv/internet.     Okay, that's an interesting take on this. But do you think it is necessary to publicly shame the patrons on tv and on the internet? One of these guys works for a well-known company in Philly and apparently has a wife and a kid. His life may well be ruined as a result of his name and picture being published in the local news, as I would not be surprised if he loses his job and his wife divorces him. Is this a fitting punishment in your book -- in addition to the punishment under the legal system as a consequence of breaking the law?     I think Carrey had some balls to do this satire and I commend him for that. I'm sure he considered that many on the right would cry foul and he did it anyway -- bravo. I also think he's ridiculously talented and hilarious, though this was definitely not one of this best bits. His stuff from In Living Color 20 years back is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen, and fortunately most of it can be found on YouTube.     That's a very interesting post and it reflects a lot of what I think as well. I always thought that the Jewishness of Jesus was something that was never given enough attention when I went to Sunday school and church as a kid, or later in my teenage years during my stint as a born again Christian. Here is a fascinating take on the subject by a Jewish rabbi. Regarding the Mesopotamian god Ishtar and Easter, this seems to be more of an internet meme than hard fact and there is likely no connection between the two; however it is generally agreed that Eostre is likely where the name of the holiday comes from.     I have boycotted Citgo since shortly after Chavez took over the oil industry. For that matter I also refuse to buy Exxon or BP gas. I know it doesn't really make a difference but it's my own personal standard. I quit buying Exxon gas after the Valdez spill, and BP after the Gulf of Mexico disaster a couple years ago. Nice.
