Seeing as it has been a month since the event and the skydiving publications have come out - any chance "the photo" with the grid can be posted online please. BASEstore.it

Check out photos of Jeb and Tim flying their Stealths in formation with Luigi under canopy here: http://www.phoenix-fly.com/gallery.htm Nice flying boys!! And great photos from Craig O'Brien and Jeff Nebelkopf too! BASEstore.it -
Robi has been filming FTL 2 using the V3 so a lot of the footage is being kept for that. Release is penciled in for spring 09. Some new camera angles and lots of new flights. All the recent videos have included the prototypes. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2704443420066675799&hl=en http://vimeo.com/1873378?pg=embed&sec=1873378 BASEstore.it

I didn't read the FAQ for a while but i think it mentions this. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1950472;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Tracking, performing jump going through WS flight plan using tracking suit etc. Common sense stuff really, sky surfing isn't going to be that useful.. Looks like we all just need to be patient, I wish it had been made clearer before that the lack of evidence was due to media commitments.(I would have kept my mouth shut ) In time I assume every photo and all of the video will be published and we will finally see the formation in flight. A little bird tells me that Guinness and the FAI will be involved too, great news. BASEstore.it

Why not go straight for a Stealth? The Ghost has significantly more surface area on the arm wing trailing edge compared to the Phantom which affects the PC reach. The suits fly and feel quite different in the air as well. BASEstore.it

I hear the participants have received a photo of the complete formation with grid - any chance someone can post it here? BASEstore.it

nah, not sure who that is. BASEstore.it

That photo is actually of an Italian jumper called Simone, it was his first jump and he was flying dirty so i could stay with him in a V1 prototype , so in short it is not worth reading into that photo. BASEstore.it

Strange, i watched it earlier without any problems. BASEstore.it

Another shot of Stane. We did a 3 way formation of V3s this weekend, catching Stane proved to be hard work!! BASEstore.it

There are small wrist mounted devices too. It gives you a beach ball sized float to hang on to. Fine for Norway as the boat will reach you fairly quick BUT for a larger body of water - i'd go with something zipped inside the suit. Assuming you are not planning to hum it you'd have time to unzip and prepare. Hook knife just in case. BASEstore.it

Actually I am working on getting the FAI to recognise WS BASE jumping too. Just kidding. They posted proof, video. As Jarno stated, my point for 'snore was about using the word "official" (and satisfying predefined criteria) BUT I have it on good authority (from Jeff himself) that "the photo" exists and will be posted in due time. Big way formation photos needed
unclecharlie95 replied to unclecharlie95's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Yes, that was me but most of those examples were too clear cut, need some more border line cases to see how it works. Don't want to post details until i'm sure it is worthwhile.. BASEstore.it -
Big way formation photos needed
unclecharlie95 replied to unclecharlie95's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Please can people post photos of any completed or near complete big way formations they have, all flyers present and some kind of structure visible. I have a draft definition that needs testing, thank you. BASEstore.it -
I have jumped the suit BOC from the plane, your hand is passing over the arm wing but as it is still inflated I had no issues finding the PC - but it doesn't feel as clean as the Prodigy or Phantom. The suit is big, it is not for beginners. If the wing area makes you uncomfortable maybe look at the Phantom, Ghost or another intermediate suit as a stepping stone. For BASE, as body shape, flexibility, arm length, rig length and experience come into play for this I can only say that you need to skydive the suit to find out if it is inside your comfort level. I personally always jump leg pouch with the V in BASE. Again you need to skydive with it to learn the movement and muscle memory. BASEstore.it

Motion in the flock is due to lag response and causes small movements to get magnified the further back in the formation you go. Having more experienced flyers who drift less and are able to watch the base as well as there immediate slot buddies can help reduce this. Some movements you need to follow (for safety) others can be ignored if you can see your position relative to the base and front of formation. True, the self imposed 'stress' and trying too hard could reduce your focus to just the flyers immediately around you. BASEstore.it

The organization for skydiving records and competition is the FAI-IPC. We have to demonstrate to them that wing suit flying deserves recognition (i.e. not a waste of their time and money AND that we will attract good PR with the general public). How? By doing what we do. Jump, get better and organise boogies, records attempts and competitions. Once we have good competition formats we need to hold them at a national level in as many different countries as possible. At that point they will take us seriously. WS stands a very good chance of being recognized once the fad of people holding hands head down wears off. WS flying catches the public imagination much more BASEstore.it

Why complicate it? The problem comes at the next step - what is the formation to beat? What was achieved in Elsinore? Can you define the formation? No photos released to date show the claimed "71 way slot perfect formation" in that case leaving the Lodi 16 - so would 17way be enough? I don't want to start that debate again and don't expect an answer - but that in short is WHY. BASEstore.it

Q. Why do we need to define what a complete flock is? Open to discussion - but my answer: A. So that we can have a solid goal to work towards, bringing progression in the discipline and attracting others to wingsuit flying in the process. I think we need to have 2 different classifications: 1) Flock formation 2) Slot perfect formation The most obvious and practical judging method is the "top shot" photo. I agree that it is poor to evaluate flying objects by only looking at the formation for a fraction of a second but due to the inherent motion judging video is not practical at the moment (until we all go away for a years skills camp). Getting 1 photo is obviously easier than providing 3 seconds of video but at least is a starting point. Lens distortion - I don't know anything about it, maybe DSE can provide a before/after example to illustrate how significant this is. For the flock formation the definition could be quite loose - "all flyers exiting and flying together in one direction in a group, with all flyers within 3 body lengths of the nearest flyer" Yes, I agree it would be easy to go BIG but the safety of separation / landing patterns should become an inherent brake to keep things sensible. A 'flock' would still be a justified accomplishment but will always be easier than performing a 'slot perfect' of the same size. For the slot perfect "all jumpers exiting together and flying a predefined slot according to dive plan..." I think we should try and find a way to define the slot without measurement using words symmetry, overlap, offset and alignment - I know, still needs lots of work.. Attached are some photos of various big ways from the past 4 years, please post the others that are missing. Just using your Mark I 'eyeball' look at the following photos and see if you can come up with criteria for the "slot perfect" Deland 23 way - flock or formation Top gun 6 way - flock or formation Stupino 25 way - flock or formation Top gun 7 way - flock or formation Empuria 8 way - flock or formation Z flock 16 way - flock or formation Lodi 16 way - flock or formation I will avoid the political hot potato of the 71 slot perfect or not - once all the photos are released to the public that question will answer itself.
