Thinkle peep I'm under the alcofluence of Incohol, but, the drunker I stand here, the longer I get! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  2. Nothing Crap about your line of thinking. Yes! I think fear of cutting away can be a very serious problem. My question to you would be, are you willing to cut away if need be? I know I wondered about this before I had my first cutaway. The bottom line is, you need to have 100 percent confidence your reserve! If not, give yourself the bowling speech. And keep the good questions comming....
  3. You got a divorce? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  4. The flip side of this coin is this.... Where I jump, the original DZO (1970's) always went and talked with the landowner anytime anyone landed off. And, he was always armed with a cold case of beer and an apology. He always went out of his way to make nice with the locals. To this day, every time I land off (which I do quite often) the landowners jump in their car, truck, tractor, snowmobile, 4 wheeler or whatever and chase me down. Not to charge me with trespass, but to see if I’m ok and to offer me a ride. You reap what you sew! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  5. What amazes me is this… We see a video of a near fatality! 8 or 9 potentially deadly mistakes are pointed out by several very experienced, highly respected, skydivers. But as soon as the word “Go Pro” is mentioned as one of these potentially deadly mistakes, the GoProHuggers call foul and spend the next 10,000 words blasting anyone willing to point out that an inexperienced jumper should not jump cameras. Sorry, but it’s like telling someone who just got their motorcycle license that a ZX14 is not a good choice as a first motorcycle. 6. Just a question here... who owns the land? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  7. Another option here... Fly your canopy thru the opening. I tend not to look at my canopy as it opens (just watch any of my video) but rather, I try to watch where I'm going. A little body english in the harness can do a lot to correct minor problems. If your canopy starts to turn to the right on opening, pull your right hip up towards your shoulder. As my canopy opens, I steer with my body while my hands continue to fly the relative wind. If I see anything in my line of flight (which is changing during opening) I'm making corrections long before I could get to the toggles or the risers. OK.... Blast Away! 8. .....Ready! ......Set! ..........Go!!!!!!!! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  9. In general terms.... What I have seen is qualified coaches working with students under the direct supervision of (10K+ jump) Instructors. And, yes, they do hit on canopy flight, spotting, patterns, etc. They spend a lot of time before each dive, and more time after, working with the student. Then, they debrief with an AFFI. Keep in mind I'm not as experienced as my years in the sport might lead you to believe. But, I do think the Coach program works if the Coach is up to the task. [ /u] I also believe that 100 jumps are not enough for most Coach candidates and 200 jumps are not enough for most to fly a camera. I’d be ok with doubling both numbers. I find it hard to believe that the drop zones I jump at are the exceptions to the rule?
  10. Not too many years back on a cloudy day at Couch Freaks... High speed low pass, 4 jumpers decided to take a 4 way out the door w/out checking altitude. 4 cypress fires putting 2 into a down plane and 2 into side by sides. The two landing the side by sides said they had the softest landings ever with little trouble controling the canopies. The two who landed the downplanes sufferd life altering injuries. Side by sides can easily turn into downplanes. So, if you're going to land a side by side, easy on the controls. If your thinking of landing a down plane, DON'T! Having done some CRW, I've stated in other threads how I'd handle these situations. It's part of my EP thought process. Have a plan and stick to it. If you're a student, use the plan your instuctors gave you. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  11. “A letch does not harmless flirting make!” I think that was Shakespeare? Anyway, this thread appears to have been hijacked… As to thanking instructors, the good ones don’t expect anything. If you grow as a jumper, they know they’ll have another friend to “play” with. Oh, and by “play” I mean “jump out of planes”. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  12. Now for the positives... -Someone was there to immediately check on him. Not only checking on his condition, but, verifying he was indeed OK. -DZO/Instructor was there immediately to let him know what he did right or wrong! And, I might add, in no uncertain terms! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  13. OK!! I recind my previous post... It is you that TV is not ready for. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  14. Someone please copy this video before it disappears. Glad all turned out well. Remember people, if you see a canopy coming right at you, turn _________________. a. left b. right c. away so you don't look death in the eye d. to look at the ground and wish you were there e. your camera off Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  15. I'm in! However, I don't think TV is ready for me yet. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  16. OK... I've been following this thread a bit. I'm amazed that no one has called this guy on his bullshit!! If you want to meet Nataly, just say so. This is, without a doubt, the worst pickup line/story ever! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  17. I agree! Pertaining to my prior post though, that jumper isn't asking about video making in the same sense most of the lower jump # people do. He truly believes that some private POV reviewable input would assist him with his methodical approach. From what he's told me, I have some doubts that he 'really' needs it ~ because he's extremely aware of what, why & how he's doing what he's doing. I think he believes it would give him a helpful & positive edge with his learning & progression. If that is indeed the case, I withdraw my previous suggestion about the bowling speech. However, I still think he'd be money ahead to friend up with a good videographer. In the long run, he'd probly save money and end up with footage he could use and enjoy. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  18. "Where's those titties I like so well. And, my goddamn beer is what I started to yell." ... Yep, I think that'll due. edited to add... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=441-Vnv7cRY for the youngons. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  19. No, maybe someday I will. I also have a small MP3 player that has a voice record mode on it. I think it would work in an upper shirt pocket and be somewhat effective. I would not have to use the C word then. Dan How about you stop mucking about and just focus on the skydiving, eh? 11 jumps listed, and you're gonna tell us what's up? You'don't know what you don't know. ...and, I'm curious; If you have an emergency, are you going to grab your little camera/recorder and search it for the proper emergency procedures? I guess what I’m saying is, if you need a recording device to study what just happened in order to learn from it, maybe the bowling speech is in order? Make more skydives! Befriend a good camera flyer to jump with you. Spend the money you saved NOT buying a camera to pay for a few of his/her jumps. My guess is, you’ll still learn and you’ll have just as much fun.
  20. Oh, that's why I carry the third one under my helmet... Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  21. I usually carry two (I'm an old CRW Pup), one on my chest strap and one in my leg pocket. In my 35 years, in the sport I've only used it once... because I couldn't get a tent stake out of the ground. However, I feel confident knowing their both there. Also, I've see many people carry them in a pouch on the harness below the three rings. I believe Mirage has a pouch built into the harness... see attached. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  22. 20 camera jumps to fly camera on a student? How many camera jumps are recommended to fly with a Tandem student? Use that number and I'd be aboard. FWIW... I'd say 200 jumps to fly camera, and 100 camera jumps to fly camera with students. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  23. We were there back in the mid 60's and as I remember, Dad had his old crank browning 8mm. I'll have to dig around a bit....
