I plan on doing a Mardis Gras video next year. I was supposed to do it this year but my recall to the Marine Corps stopped that. There is enough going on at that boogie to make an entire movie out of the footage. I had other videographers set up to work for me as well. Start thinking of good things to do for the video next year. I am going to try to have a videographer on almost every load. And you know there will be a lot of boobies on a Mardis Gras video. Should be very popular. William

Ok I was stuck in Virginia on Military duty while the Mardis Gras Boogie went on at my home DZ. Please post some of your good times so I know what I missed. William

This doesn't sound right? William

Do not try this without getting instruction. I wouldn't try it unless I was over water as well. I want to learn this technique but I won't untill I have the oppertunity to so it right. The landings I have seen using this technique seem to be very sensitive. I saw a very good canopy pilot break his back trying to learn it. William

We don't need any hard fast numbers for when you can start doing hook turns. This will not help the situation. What we need is experienced skydivers teaching canopy flight and policing what goes on with inexperienced jumbers. If you are learning a hook turn at 1000 jumps you still need instruction. They also are not for everyone. If we had someone at every dropzone that watched landings and enforced safe canopy practices it would go a long way. This is supposed to be the job of the S&TA. The situation I see a lot today is that the S&TA is someone without any high speed landing experience and eventually just gives up. William

That is ancient. PD owned the patent due to the Excalibur, a cross-braced, square, F-111 canopy that in its day was the hottest thing out there. That was settled years ago when the FX was first introduced. William

One other thing I did that helps a lot. I made a music list. When they sign up for the video the manifest gives them a card and sits them down with the music list. I have them pick out there own music. This way they can get something they like. Just make sure they pick out the music before they jump or you will be chasing them down all over the place after the jump when you could be editing. William

One thing I would suggest is that after yu put in the skydive eith mixed slow mo and full speed, you also include the freefall one time all the way through at regular speed. This let's them see how long it was and get a good feel for what took place. I would highly recommend having some stock footage especially if you are like me and shoot a lot of videos in one day. There will be times where you have to do a back to back and your interview is cut short. This is less obvious in the final cut if you have some stock footage to add to the tape. On my intro I always put a lot of sceens from around the drop zone like the wind socks, the plane taking off, various neat signs like the one that says entrance with an arrow pointing up. One other thing. After you slow mo the exit most tandem passangers think it is really neat if you slow mo them back into the plane. William

I can see it now. Clay stops posting after 6 months, three years later the next closest person catches him in post numbers. William

I fly camera and I always stow the slider behind my head. I don't think you have much to worry about there. Once the canopy is open and flying nicely, the odds of you having to chop it are pretty remote. Also the slider is not much of a worry to tangle with your helmet. It is the lines that usually get tangled. Also the slider would be no more likely to get tangle behind your head than it would directly over it, William

Ducky, you should be able to jump. Just talk to Mike Igo (DZO). He is good about helping you out in any way he can. I am sure he can find someone to get you up to speed quickly. William

Ok this sucks. Everywhere I turn I am hearing about the Mardis Gras Boogie. Moss Point is my home drop zone and I was supposed to be doing the boogie video this year, but I was recalled to the Marine Corps and I am stuck in Quantico, VA. I can't even get off for the weekend. William

And your point is?

Crossfires have hard riser pressure??? I used to jump a crossfire. I could spiral it with front risers as long as I wanted and then whip it back the other way with front risers. The riser pressure was the lightest I have seen. I still jump some of the ones around the drop zone from time to time. If I jump one loaded the same as my FX it dives just as hard. William

Yes wings will do that for you. My canopies in a wings: Raven 1 181 sq. ft. FX 99 sq. ft. William

It is sad that it is becoming the cool thing to do. I really enjoy high performance landings, but some people just downsize because everyone else is. I can understand the person that likes to spiral an turn fast that downsizes, but I think the current cross-braced canopies are not the way to go for these people. A stilletto or Cobalt would seem much better suited. William

And then there are some of us that get excited when the wind dies. Surfs up!! William

The one fatality that I knew personally had a side mount. I do think that a top mount is less likely to snag. It is still possible but a little less likely. I have seen people shoot very good head down with a top mount. You just have to ge used to it being there. William
-
yes it has limitations. One of them is that because the fabric os more porrus, you have to flare it more to get the same amount of lift. This will shorten surfs. Doesn't mean it can't be done, and doesn't mean you can't learn on an F-111 canopy. William
-
I think you should learn everything you want to do on your new canopy on the one you already have. William
-
I will second the sabre2 idea. You should try one. I jump an fx, but someone had a demo Sabre2 a few weeks ago. I didn't jump it enough to get to know it well, but I think this can be a great swoop canopy in the mid range of performance. William

He was a snag fatality but not because he did not take the helmet off soon enough. One thing it is very important to do as a camera flyer is to make sure your main is cleared before you pull your reserve. This takes a little extra time and can not be done if you have a RSL. Another reason to pull a little higher. When John cut away his main he quickly pulled his reserve. The main had snagged on his helmet and he didn't even know. The two entangled. After this the damage was already done. The reserve never cleared the main. You can see him fighting it but there are to many problems. Not all entanglements can be solved by ditching the helmet. True, if your reserve lines snag on the helmet, releasing it should clear the problem. If you do not wait some extra time after releasing your main, you are asking for trouble. If the main is snagged on the helmet, it is possible to not even realize it at first. Once they are entangled, releasing your helmet may not have any effect. John's mistake was not waiting long enough to see if his main cleared. For this reason, no camera flier should wear an RSL, and should never be pushing the lower end of opening altittudes.
