How much unstowed line do you leave when packing a main?

i was taught and also firmly believe in 18 - 24 inches. -

heal well. this world needs more people like you. -
well for me... after i snuck back for a few days after about 5 months over here... and of course with the ol' lady's permission i got some great jumps in and out of my system (thanks to my pals in MD) to hold me over until i get back for good. then, when i do get back... it's on!
-
yo man... you'll have plenty of time and money when you come back from iraq. do as much reading as you can... then hit up an FJC. it will be worth it.
-
no, sorry. i blame the fact that i'm completely delirious/dehydrated from drinking nothing but o'douls for the last 10 days. i miss my country.
-
i'm looking for these people.
-
no offense... but what did you expect??
-
also, who the hell freefalls handheld from 500ft for ONLY 2 seconds? you'd have been safer to jump from lower. IMO of course.
-
1st off a guyed A, new gear, low jump #s, cross winds?? sounds like a recipe for disaster. i hope you were drunk. because the only real excuses to hit a guy wire are being drunk and inexperienced, or celebrating your birthday.
-
just a thought... often what allows an A to be jumped without ramifications is the consent of the landowner, not the tower owner. i'm sure if the actual owners of the A were aware of trespassers, they would be more inclined to tighten up it's security. minimizing evidence of traffic other than by the technicians could prove to help keep an object open.
-
what was it?? take only photographs... leave only footprints... i like the way that sounds.
-
it would be a terrific feat, no doubt. but where i'm at, there's not so much as a hill as far as Earths go. i'm trying to limit my travels, as things blowing up around me i consider to be "not cool".
-
i'd be in. i'd be good for at least two. but, i probably won't be back from shitville until september.
-
you're probably correct. most likely i could just make a slightly deeper setting for slider down. but as it stands, they work for now. someday when i'm bored (and not in Iraq), maybe i'll try out this "tuning" you speak of. til then i'll jump downwind.
-
actually, i do that too. almost every jump to date... DBS, regardless of slider up or down. no problems so far.
-
yah, you could do it either way... but i figured since you're slightly more likely to have a malfunction... it's easier and less expensive to cutaway your BASE canopy and throw out another skydiving main, rather than cause an unnecessary reserve repack. also, a bag just helps make sure nothing gets away from you on the ride up. pre-mature exits are a bi-otch! also - intentional cutaways when you're bored.
-
i think that is a borderline personal attack. i know who cares... me! i wouldn't be caught without my tiny "cool guy" rig at a DZ. again, this is where the trash bag method comes in handy. the best of both worlds.
-
just put your BASE rig on underneath your skydiving rig... pack your BASE canopy into a trash bag (slider up of course), hop out with your back to the relative wind and toss the bag. i can neither confirm nor deny that i've seen this done. sorry for the litter.

30mins!? damn, you must be hanging out with scott too much. i prefer to take my time, well you know... preserve my strength. maybe you could just pour some of the jug into a ziplock bag... then dump it in your mouth when you get to the top. then it'll just fit in your pocket.
-
just buy a $0.69 gallon jug of water. bring it with you and take a good swig before you climb... then stash it at the lz. hurry up and jump if you're thirsty. stop complicating shit!
-
the word "overtightening" would indicate something bad. but simply tightening your chest strap is fine, so long as you don't lose any actual mobility. it is also preferred among many free-fliers because it tends to discourage arching which can be bad in vertical flying. personally, i keep my chest strap pretty tight like you're describing... but upon deployment let it out to the end for maximum canopy performance. hey, just my opinion... but i hope that helps.

wait... are we talking about the same thing here?? i thought it was called a TARP..??
