Hell, if I knew a guy like that, I'D marry him!

Well, you never know when you might be on a business trip, or visiting relatives out the middle of nowhere, say OKLAHOMA, and need a fix. You wouldn't want to limit your options like that! Carl

We'll need it for the 100-way attempt on Sunday! Hey, why not? Shark, care to organize the CRW record attempt while we're at it? Carl
-
Interesting. Any of my Northeast homies want to take a stab at this at Jumptown this weekend (weather permitting... grrrrrrrr)? Carl

So, this is because the feeling of falling comes from acceleration, which you don't get at terminal velocity (by definition), unless, as you observe, you get caught in a burble, "cork", or otherwise disrupt the equilibrium between the relative wind resistance and acceleration due to gravity. One of the fun things that evolving in a constant gravity field has given us, that we toss away with our clever technology (along with motion sickness, but that's another post

I will consider the gauntlet thrown! Hmmmm. dz.com boogie, interesting idea!

Girlfriend, you must be hanging around Michele over there, or maybe it's something in the water. Damned poetic that.

So, Jason, how did you like the exits? What positions did you take?

That'll be awesome, Pyke. Set the bar so we know what we have to SMASH!

So, what is the record for largest formation/most points for a jump made up entirely of registered and active dz.com posters? What would be the criteria for such a thing? I could see getting a whole bunch of "ringers" to register and claiming a record, but that wouldn't be right. Should we specify that some percentage be "Enthusiasts", or have at least posted once? In any case, I am officially announcing that we will be attempting to set or break said record at Perris Valley Skydiving on the weekend of the 28th of July. We are shooting for a one-point 10-way completion, or more (points and/or people). If you are interested in participating, or helping to organize this attempt, please send me a private message or email. Let us know how many jumps you have, what slots you prefer, what the largest dives you have been in are, etc. This is just to get an idea of what we can expect skills-wise, and what to plan for warm-up dives. This will be a skygod-free event, other than we intend to rub this in the face of folks from all the less fortunate parts of the world. All are welcome, even if you are just visiting for the weekend. Perris runs three Twin Otters (two of them are Super Otters), so we will have plenty of lift capability. There are nearly 100 of you that claim Perris and/or Elsinore as your home dz, and many more that call SoCal home, so we should be able to have a pretty decent showing. We should even be able to put a couple of groups together! Three-plane formation load? Not out of the question, but let's start small and get there as we have success throughout the weekend. Please plan to dedicate the whole weekend, but if you can only make it for part, let me know anyway, and we'll put together some side dives, or work you into the warm-ups, early attempts, whatever. At the very least, this will be a great way for us all to meet! Yippikiyay! Carl --- Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. --William Jennings Bryan

How about this: DOOR!! Ready, Set, GO!!!!!!!!!!

Herv, Nice job! How great to have experienced folks at your DZ that are not only willing to jump w/you and show you a great skydive, but go out of their way to get you involved. That's how it should be, isn't it? Carl
-
Nicely put, Lisa. I'll bet this philosophy serves you in relationships and life in general as well. Carl

Mmmmmmm, honey geek....

Or just "Oneders" - ooooooh

Merrick, I had posted a thread recently about the Safire vs. Crossfire, and after getting the responses, and talking to Jim Slaton and the guys at Perris Extreme, I have pretty much decided to skip the Safire and go for the Crossfire. I want to demo a couple of them first to make sure, and compare the Cobalt as well. The Crossfire probably one of the best designed canopies out there, assuming the performance matches your requirements. YMMV Carl

Marc, Have you read an old book called Breathe, Little Boy, Breathe? It was written by an ER MD, intern I think, describing his impressions and experiences. Anyway, he makes the point that after seeing all the things that can happen to people, every day objects become sinister and frightening. Kitchen knives, stoves, power tools, bathtubs, electricity, everything. You must see the same thing in your line of work. I remember picking up a guy one time that had torn the tip of his nose off while hammering. He caught it in the claw end while swinging. Who would have guessed? So what's the difference between 10 feet and 13kft? Carl

One other point on all this. It's one thing to try to convince a whuffo that skydiving is safe. Just please don't convince yourself that it is. Skydiving Is Dangerous If you forget that, and think that it's no more dangerous than driving a few hundred miles, then it just became very dangerous for you and those around you. Of course, driving is also dangerous, that shouldn't be forgotten. If people drove with the same attention to equipment and emergency procedures that we have, there would be orders of magnitude fewer highway deaths. I guess. Carl

The one I always hate is when the say "it's not flying, its falling!" Oh, thanks for clearing that up for me, I was sooo confused about that, but your genius insight has set me straight! Grrrrrrrrrr

Hmm. Forgot to mention "good-looking and high level of sexual prowess". Must have just been an oversight.

Please don't "place" your p/c into the wind stream. Throw it as hard as you can. What you may be seeing in the two cases is that the BASE jumper has little relative wind, while the jumper at terminal has quite a bit, so it gets pulled up very fast. Note that in both cases, the p/c should end up just as far out to the side (mod tension at bridle extension), which is what you want to keep it out of your burble.
