  1. I'm not sure exactly what time I'll be there. I actually do have to work on Friday. I'll try to find you when I get there. Carl
  2. Go, gurl. You deserve it! Don't forget us little people when you're sunning in the Riviera, doing demo jumps into celebrity homes, or whatever. It's late, sorry.
  3. Well, whatever it is, it's more than five! They sent me a 12-year cert, and I wasn't even a current member! Congrats, Lisa. I'm dying to hear about all those "contributions"!
  4. Awesome, man! Can't wait to get you rung out next weekend! Yahoooooo!

    Some thoughts

There's your answer right there, although I wouldn't say we revel in it, except maybe when picking up chicks (my last pickup worked great, was the last one I'll ever have to do). Anyway, my point being that because we bring the dangers right out in the open and address them, the sport is safer, imho. I don't scuba, so I'm not qualified to opine as to it's approach, but if what you say is true, that the sport/industry tries to "hide" the dangers, therein lies the trouble. Incident reports, "save" reports and forums like this make the sport safer by allowing us to all learn from the mistakes of others. Carl
  6. Yes, but even better, Mark Brown (GreenHornet) has volunteered to do the actual load organizing! I am going to send out an email to the folks that have told me they are going to come, and make another post here after I get into LA tomorrow evening. Basically, we would like to get going bright an oily on Saturday morning. 9am sounds good. Also, Mark will be there on Friday if we want some advance practice. I am planning on getting there early afternoonish. We should also plan to get together Friday night, whomever can make it, to bend a few bottle caps and twist a few lemons over at the Bombshelter. We are looking good! Carl

    Find Your DZ

  8. Really, Sis, you must have had A TON of beer to go for that wanker. Oh, hi, Pyke!
  9. You're on. Zen, you in? All we need now is some financial backing. Anyone?

    Jan Davis

I just found this cool piece that someone wrote about Jan Davis (the BASE jumper who died at Yosemite in 1999, not DevilWoman). Here's a quote attributed to her: "I'm not afraid to die. I believe life is about action and passion, and when you live in fear, you spend your life being afraid of things that may never happen. I don't live like that." Cool.
  11. Man, I am so there. I've been racking my brain trying to think of a business plan that involves something skydiving-related, even if it is pro-consumerist and/or pro-office! I've got a couple of ideas, but they rather involve selling software. Carl
  12. Some of us just jimmied the lock and let ourselves in...
  13. Man that does suck. Are you getting enough from the contracting to stay fed? Tough times. They'll get better, tho.

    Find Your DZ

Went looking for my old "home", but no luck. But, found plenty of new homes and old visiting places! Perris Valley - you can see the words "SKYDIVE PERRIS" on the runway! Lake Elsinore?? - There's a lake where the airport should be? Jumptown - Actually, this is before (and after) the drop zone was here. Pepperell - where I met the wife, awwwwww. You can see the Ghetto pretty well! Eloy - more advertising for space aliens! Quincy - but no convention. Clewiston - you can almost smell the sugar cane burning! Lebanon, ME wasn't important enough to photograph with the satellites, apparently. Oh, well. Boston-Providence - once I get that square reserve. Real Home - for that backyard demo (not)! Can you find your DZ? Carl
  15. I know that feeling. I had already moved on from my original DZ (Woodstock, CT) when it closed, but it was still sad to know I could never go "home". All the spots: the 'X' building, the round building, the first, second and third fields, all never to be "spotted" again. Well, if it helps, you can see the satellite images here. Carl
  16. Well, the basic problem is that asymmetric key encryption is very hard to crack, but very slow. Each party can keep their own private key, well, private. Symmetric key systems are fast, but have the vulnerability that the key has to be exchaged ahead of time. Once the key is compromised, security can be lost. SSL solves the problem by using an initial (slow) secure connection using asymmetric key algorithms to exchange a symmetric key (and negotiate protocols, algorithms, etc.). Once the key is securely exchanged, a (fast) secure connection can be established using symmetric algorithms for the remainder of the data exchange. Cool, eh? Oh, wait, what was the question?
  17. Sigh. Does the movie have a title, or should we go on playing 20 questions all day?? Not like I have anything better to do...
  18. I just can't resist these kind of things. Apparently, he was supposed to say "I forgot my pencil" when they drop through the ceiling. They never really figured out a joke that went with that punchline, so Judd just made up another one, with no punchline. Doesn't really make sense, but there it is. Sorry. Sample Reference Although apparently people have come up with various punchlines of their own. The best one I found was: 'The the poodle says "After I get the drink I have everything"' Carl
  19. There are two other possibilities: - The unit was not new when you got it - It is not really out of date The only other possibilities are as already stated, basically that the unit in the rig is not the one you handed to your rigger oh so long ago. Someone, possibly him, pinched it. Sherlock Holmes says that when all the reasonable explanations are discounted, only one of the the remaining ones, no matter how absurd, can be the correct one. This is in contrast to Occam's Razor, which says that when given a choice of options, the simplest is probably correct. I don't know if that helps, but good luck! Carl

    WOW!!!

Oh, Paula, I think I'm going to cry! Can someone please pass a tissue? >snif< Carl (just being a jerk for some reason)
  21. Pammi, sorry to be amused at your discomfort, but the mental image of you all sweaty and packing has really made my day! Carl (bad, bad boy!)
  22. You should always be able to have sufficient time to demo the gear you are buying, and have time to inspect it, have a rigger check it out, etc. You not only want to make sure it's what you thought it was, and that it's in good shape, but that it's a good fit, and you are comfortable flying it. Don't buy gear "sight unseen". Usually that's not a problem. You may have to pay shipping or something if you decide to back out of the deal, but arrange all that up front. Good luck! Carl

    WOW!!!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This is one of the things that makes this sport great! Skygods and AFF factories take note! Carl
