  1. I posted a long, involved process under post/reply, but before all that, try this: Log in at the main page, be sure to click the "Remember Login" Go to the forums, it should have your information, if not, click the "Login" link, save the password as above Go into one of the forums, if the "Login" link is there, click on it and log in again If this still doesn't work, try it again a couple of times. If it still doesn't work, go to myDROPZONE and click the "Log Out" link. Go back to the main page and start again. If this still doesn't work, try the longer process.

Clay, how many jumpers can fit in a C-5, or is that classified?

I don't have all my logbooks, but from memory: C-182, C-172, C-206, King Air (Mullins and regular), DC-3, Twin Otter (super and regular), Caribou, CASA, Skyvan (super), Pilatus Porter, 727, Huey. I don't remember jumping the CASA, but I saw it in my logbook the other day, so it must be true!
  4. A couple of other things to try. First, make sure that when it asks for the password, that you click on the "Remember Login" check box. Second, on every page, check to see that the "Logout" button is there. If not, click the "Log In" link and log in again. Be aggressive about it. Lastly, is it at all possible that you are not typing the right password? I don't know if case matters, or whatever, but check the CAPS LOCK key, that kind of basic stuff. If it turns out that your account is flumoxed, then only Sangiro can fix it. BTW, are you in Long Island or Florida?
  5. Addict is 700, I think. Getting there! If you have to ask... I see you shiver in antici...
  6. Happy 500th post, Speedy.

    No offense taken, fred!

    Newbie Questions

Well, fred, it's great to have faith in your instructors, and sure, they can't teach you everything, but you should know what your equipment is, and what is does. Especially if you specifically ask them. Watcher was able to give a good explaination that would have taken him 30 seconds to do in person, max. I would not consider knowing what an RSL is to be an "advanced technique". Perhaps some of the EPs with it, but not the purpose of the device.

This is an unacceptable answer, imo, unless you have shown yourself to be dense, which I doubt.
  10. Right, I thought we had all agreed that radical toggle turns are old-school and dangerous. But, I'm no expert. I spent exactly one day with Jim Slaton and his boyz learning this stuff. Most of the time, I was like "huh?", but we did spend some time going through the aerodynamics of performance canopy flight on the ground. Two things that stuck with me: toggle turns steal performance, which means they steal speed and maneuverability. Also, that a big loser is flow separation, which is just what it sounds like. When doing a radical turn, or getting into turbulence, the smooth airflow over the top of the canopy breaks, which reduces lift, causes drag, etc. It sounds like aerodynamic stall, actually. So, doing a snap toggle turn into a swoop sucks in multiple ways. It kills your lift by separating the flow and deforming the wing, and it reduces your ability to maneuver. The better approach is to do smooth, carving, front riser approaches to build up speed and therefore lift, and then use the toggles to flatten out and then to flare at the end. In canopies with a negative recovery arc, I have heard that a toggle snap is an efficient way to transition from the dive to the surf, but I don't really know for sure. Like I said, I can write all this pretty easy, but translating that to actual swoops is still something I'm working on. Some feedback from SM1 and you other experts would be appreciated. I'd rather not continue on under false pretenses or bad interpretations of stuff I heard once while drinking from a firehose. By the way, the $200 for a day of five filmed and critiqued landings, ground school, etc. with Perris Evolution is highly worth it! Whatever your level, they will do the right thing for you. Very cool guys, very good instructors, and awesome canopy pilots! Carl
  11. Ah, yes, that helps. I actually have found a bunch of information in the last few minutes. Mainly, that the Jedei (correct spelling), was manufactured by AirTime Designs, which is now out of business. Brian Germain invented the airlock concept (licenced to PD for the Icarus models, I guess) and introduced it on the Jedei. When Airtime went out of business, Germain started Big Air Sportz, and designed the Samurai, which takes the design a step further, learning from the Jedei (they call the Samurai the "Return of the Jedei", argh). Next step, a demo. Carl
  12. Anyone here fly a Jedi? I'm actually not even sure who the manufacturer is, but I've heard from a couple of people that own them that they are pretty cool, high-performance ellipticals with squared-off ends? Dunno. They are derived from the Jonathan, made by the same folks. As you can imagine, searches on the Web for "Jedi" and "Jonathan" are a little difficult to get anything out of. This is a solvable problem BTW, and anyone in the search engine business who wants to know how to fix it should call me. Anyway, any info/thoughts on the Jedi would be appreciated. Carl
  13. Well, maybe they will do something really cool, like Pink (SkyVan) in Europe, or the Shark at Perris!
  14. I read somewhere once that humor is the release of fear. In other words, we find something funny when it scares us at first, then we realize that it's not so scary, and laugh. It's like the lower, animal brain reacts first, and the upper, human brain gets a boot out of the fact that the animal brain thought it was going to die! You can see this in a lot of comedy, if you watch for it. I'm not sure if it's related or not. But I can imagine that when we make light of these things, they are extra funny for us because the underlying fear is so much more real.
  15. Did you try the Big Shot? Good way to get your whuffo friends into freefall! Although being in freefall at ~700 feet is kind of scary! haha I love looking out the glass walls in the lower observation deck. You can just lay on them, and imagine you are floating above the strip. Of course, I spend the whole time looking for alternate landing areas, as if. What a great BASE jump that would be! Someone must have already tried it! Carl
  16. Just be careful that your notes don't get misinterpreted.
  17. Any word from our Quincy-goers? Did the jet make it? Postings on the wreck and in the WFFC bulletin board seem to indicate otherwise. There also seem to have been some arrests(!) and much lower attendance. Bummer.
  18. Well, don't tell BRIGITTE LISS that! She placed 9th out of 19 in the Intermediate division of the 2001 Para-Performance Pro Blade Competition!
  19. Anything fun? Wanna help me finish a little thingy I tried to write to simulate weights on springs? Maybe a dive planning/log book thing, or a proper manifest/dz operations system, or an Intranet-in-a-box, or a WAP interface to dz.com, or a three-tier media (mp3) server for home networks, or a code simulator for EMS training, or any of the other lame ideas I have but never have time or $$ to do anything about?
  20. Mapquest gives me 19 hours, 11 minutes. Why not? God, I'm bored!
  21. We do?!!? Holy fuck, YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!! Damn!
  22. Nice one, Clay. I didn't know anything about Burma. Check this out. Great photography, message and design. Wow.
  23. Well, I haven't been able to do this for awhile, because I've been travelling for work, but one of the things that I really loved doing during the week was singing in a large chorus. This sounds lame, but if you have never been harmonizing against 70 other voices, a piece like the Brahms Requiem, you have no idea. If you have done it, you know what I mean, if you haven't, there is no way I can explain it to you. Sound familiar? Hehe. Anyway, I really miss it. Oh, and there's also Tantric sex, that's pretty cool. Other than that, it's work, skydiving and nest building. Carl
  24. Hang in there, bud, we'll get this figured out! Try the following, assuming you are using IE on Windows. Some of this is likely superfluous, but who cares: - If you are logged into the main page of dz.com, click on the "myDROPZONE" link in the upper right. If you get the main panel, click on "Log Off". If not, don't worry about it. - Go to the Forums - If the "Logout" link is active, click it. If not (you will see "Login", "New User"), move on. - Close all instances of IE, Windows Explorer, any other apps you can - Open the Control Panel (Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel) - Double-click the "Internet Options" icon - Click the "Delete Cookies..." and "Delete Files..." buttons in the middle section (Temporary Internet files) - Close the Internet Properties window and Control Panel window - Reboot the machine - Open IE, go to dropzone.com - Log in. If it pops you back to the login window, log in again. Retype your password if you have to, even if Windows pre-fills the field in for you. - Go to the Forums. - If the "Login" link is active, click on it and log in again, as above, you may have to do this a couple of times, retype your password, etc. - If this still doesn't work, just keep loggin in whenever you can. Remember that the main and forum logins are actually independent, but usually are kept in sync. You may be logged into one and not the other. If all else fails, install Mozilla and resist the Microsoft hegemony. Even better, install Linux. Good luck! Carl
