To put these numbers into prospective we need to see the %. Total Fatalities to total jumps at a DZ annually. "Size" of the DZ in this case dosn't matter but the quantity of jumps. Is it a weekend only facility or a 7 day a week operation. Then we can get really deep and break it into other criteria, student, swooper, malfunctions etc. etc. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Off the original topic but, isn't the radio now being used for freefly coaching, in freefall? Isn't the radio being used to help canopy pilots (with 100's maybe 1000's of jumps) land better? For a student who is showing a need to, or wanting to, improve their landing skills it is SMART for the Instructor to use every peice of equipment and instrcution they have available to them. If the student is still willing to learn and trying, just like we where, then teach them. The title may be "Instructor" but the job is to TEACH. Back on topic. Charging extra if it is not the DZ's normal method, doesn't seem to be a real big deal to me. If the DZ rents a whole set up but typically at ,say level 5 the radio is not part of the set up. That means the DZ can have 4 sets of gear but only needs 2 radio packages. Ifthe use of the radio will get in the way of "normal" proceedures for the DZ's Student rental it would seem resonable to charge a small fee. But I would probably just charge the same fee across the board and not get to bent out of shape over it. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I have seen this many time over the last 8/9 years. It has sometruths to it and it has some pretty angry feelings behind it too, I imagine. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

using an aviation winds aloft forecast,

loudiamonds info is the way to go. I use the same HARP/CARP methods and I too put canopies in very tight spots (although not usually under fire like lou does) I have used it for over 300 "blind" spots and I haven't missed the landing ao yet. (knocking the hell out of my real wood desk!). I even use it when I can use WDI's. It never hurts to stay practiced at it. An Instructors first concern is student safety. When I was at Black and Gold I asked the same thing. 4 way is the focus this year and other experienced comp fellows/gals will fill out the 8 way, if BK says they are able to refocus (with a young team) for Nats or another Comp. Having looked through the high power scope I say your a bit mislead. Even at moderate range with good lighting it is not easy to tell real from fake. Being told of previous threats makes the target go from "rubber" to "full metal jacket" to save lives. He has a histroy and it appears he is moving up the ladder of violence at that point. he has threatened bombs, so why not having bullets? they are easier to get a hold of. Did He take a hostage at one point ?(again hard to see weapon clearly if masked by the head of ahostage). He was chased around by a school cop, he may have made verbal threats and again hard to see if real or fake when moving. The officer who shot did the right thing, IMO, with the knowledge he had. If a perimeter officer or supervisor had more info and didn't relay it it is not the shooting officers fault. It is a sad day. But not the officers fault. It is the Parents for not being more invovled in the childs life. Don't ask me to accept, condone and pay for poor parenting which leads to poor behaiver on the childs part. Don't ask me to condem the Police for protecting my child while she is at school. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Censorship - some don't like it, so YOU can't watch it
matthewcline replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
It is all $. The Station has to sell advertising slots to make money. You can't sell advertising to a client if he/she knows your veiwers are not watching. What you call censorship Disney/Fox/NBC/CBS etc. etc.... calls the bottom line, which is, cash in hand. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! -
The kids of every generation have slackers and proactive "society fixers". I volunteered at the Humane society as a teen. My Dad volunteered at the Youth center as a Teen. My Grandfather volunteered at the Boy Scouts as a Teen. The commonality, Parents invovlement in the childs life. They showed each generation right from wrong and even though it may have had flaws they communicated with each other. The media wasn't able to show this then, as now. The current trend in the US ( I can not speak of other countries even though I have been in a few, it has never been long enough), is for the multi media toys to raise our kids. The parents who fail to spend time (quality time) with their kids are failing them. Those are the parents who say ADD and Medication as soon as the child acts out. Those are the Parents who scream for the Judge to do some thing as soon as the police pick up their child. Those are the Parents who tell you about how much fucking money they have but can not tell you the childs teachers name, class schedule, hobies, friends names, the childs age and birth date! ( I do not dispute that ADD may be legite, I think though a lot of ADD children actuall sufer from PADD [think about it] and do not need any medication just time from the parent). Th police had been put in a bad spot and the officer should feel he made the right call, even though he did not make it alone, unfortunatly he will probably be huanted in mind for many years. The Flight Concepts Rage Tandem is a fine canopy. Red made it in a more square design as opposed to a tapered wing. The idea is it will glide well and have more flare when needed. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I would suspect that you will have the whole RWS standard skyhook set up when done. RWS Risers (why assume liability for a set of Home mades?) RSL Reserve pin and reserve cable loop end set up. That is what Bill builds and it is no secret, plus it seems to work. All in all it is a good set up for most skydivers. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Never ask an old paratrooper how many jumps he has
matthewcline replied to jdfreefly's topic in The Bonfire
Going to the reunions and the various ceremonies at the SOF/ABN museum has been very enlightening. There is a great deal of mutual respect shared by those serving and those "still" serving. They may not be on "active" duty but the Veterans teach me some thing new every time I see one, so hats off to all young and old! Have a very happy, extremely well earned Veterans Day! What was that shipping place on Beach Park Blvd? I think that was where they are. Maybe they could do it for less (but yeah that is a bunch o' to ship) I lived there for 12 years but it was 19 years ago (folks are still there). An Instructors first concern is student safety. Mike, I do not dispute your right in what your writing. But so many FSDO's do not read the rules that way and the FAA's FSDO hand book (not law but how to work in the FAA "law") contradicts so many of the points you make. So wouldn'd it be easier (legal requirment or not) to work with the FSDO and at least let them "think" they are "in charge"? Then work with them to come around to the right way? I have over a couple of years been able to educate the Nashville FSDO in regards to skydiving and Demonstration Jumping (I think for our areas betterment). This has helped to foster a good relationship and now the FSDO tends to call me and ask for my opinion, where as before he would tell some one "no" as his standard answer to any skydive not on a DZ he was familiar with. True story. Several jumpers near Ft. Campbell like to hit a fellows Back yard (a large piece of property)after the day at the DZ and then BBQ, they jump in and start to party. A pilot complained and the FSDO was getting ready to pursue legal action by trying to find the Jump Pilot and Jumpers. He didn't know who to talk to for the jumpers, so he called me (he could find the pilot pretty easy it appears, but had not contacted him yet). We talked over lunch and that was the end of it. I took a SIM and the FAR's (I have the whole collection but only took the part 105 book) and a bit of humble pie (that I didn't need nor have to use). Robert Cope and I had a good talk and the jumpers still jump when they can. The whole talk happened with out their knowledge and I only talked to one well after the fact as a funny conversation starter. An Instructors first concern is student safety. True it is not a Demo per say. but your not on a DZ and some FSDO's (Flight Standards District Office) do not care if it is a demo or not, they will still want 7711-2's submitted and 7711-1's issued to make the jump. Check the airframe and insure it is one certified for dropping skydivers. Check the local airport authority and get permission (in writing is best) to take off Jump and land there. Check with the FSDO and abide by what they want in the way of paper work and NOTAMS. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

Dawn, You could always convince Ben to design the plexi glass walls for the bottom of AAC and maybe 10' above the height of the net out on the outer wall. No outside influence buut still out side. Diablo, Maybe I didn't understand it when it happened, but I was watching Majik in SVO (2002 I think, maybe, I am getting old) and they had the same bobbing up and down issue that us lesser mortals had in the tunnel. It was a bit windy out side (hurricane had broke up to thunderstorm from skydiver hell). that is why I figured it to be the outside air influence and not just the bodies, but I do understand the bodies burble and how they can effect the tunnels lifting ability. But hey, Tunnels are a great tool and toy! It just depends on the mind set I think. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!

I think there is a bit of mis-conception with the blowers and suckers (I feel some what like a dirty old man writing that, I mean, I am but, oh never mind back to the point). With the SV designs the intake can be affected by the air flow around the out side of the facility. In the videos this usualy looks like the group is moving up and down in the flight chamber. Gusty wind tends to make the group bob up and down. With the "Blower" designs there appears to be less affect on the flight chamber (as long as it is contained) by the out side air. If the SV models (non-recirculating) had a way of negating the gound wind currents then they would be equal in ability and then cost of design would be the only difference. But I am no designer just a user.

...You have 100 + static line jumps and only 5 are in day light. ...You go to the FJC and wonder how your gonna cut someone with a hook knifes tiny little blade. ...Your jumps usually include 2500 of your close "friends", trying NOT to DO CRW with rounds. Boston -> Eloy.....best way to get there?
matthewcline replied to AlexCrowley's topic in The Bonfire
Airlines are airlines, just put the extra dime in and take her first class. After all your going first class in her training. If you want to really have fun at Eloy (no end of day commute and driving after a drink!) get a team room and immerse your self in the scene. Call manifest for a good hotel listing though, if private showers are the standard for her. I didn't see any thing "right next door", but I wasn't looking either.
