Why can't I get a job without being insulted?
tigra replied to Airman1270's topic in Speakers Corner
The only problem is, the tests are easy enough to fool and "hard drugs" like coke and heroin only stay in your system for a few days whereas pot- relatively harmless- stays in your system for weeks and you can test positive after having been around it without partaking. I'd rather hire someone who smoked a little weed on the weekends than someone with a serious coke habit who managed to stay clean for 2 days in order to fool a drug test. -
I'm with you. I was a lot younger when I did it before, and it was only for a few weeks! Back then, the maximum package weight was 50 pounds, and I didn't have to lift many of those, but the smaller ones add up too! I actually managed to do something to my knee just from hopping in and out of the truck- no permanent damage but it was sore and swollen enough to need crutches for a few days. Plus, the second year my driver was cranky and acted pissed that he got stuck with a girl- didn't matter how hard I worked. So, all in all, that's not a job I would go back to.

I worked 3 winter breaks at UPS when I was in college. The pay was better than anything else I could get at the time, but since I was heading back to school, staying on full time wasn't an option. The first year, I worked in their package center helping the customers fill out the forms and address labels properly. (Kind of boring, but fun) Then I did two winters as a driver's helper. That was hard work, but the pay was pretty good for a part time temporary job! The driver would load up a cart for me and drop me at the end of one block, take off and make deliveries out of the truck a few blocks away and meet me someplace in between, usually to load me up again. You kept going until the truck was empty OR the driver had hit 12 hours. (Union rules? They also paid time and a half after 8 hours!) And they do seem like a pretty good company to work for in terms of training, benefits, that kind of thing!

Looks like he's going to be a big boy!

Temping- if you are reasonably intelligent and reliable you will exceed the client's expectations. You can take short term assignments so by the time you are either bored with the work or sick of your co-workers you can move on to something else. And if you are reliable and reasonably intelligent, the agency you work for should have no trouble placing you regularly. And since its temporary, you can take time off if you need to. (Just not so much that they can no longer consider you "reliable"!) I used to do a lot of temping when I was younger and since then I've had a lot of temps working for me. Now I understand why I got so many offers for full time employment as a temp- there are a lot of lameass temps out there! There is retail (as in department stores.) Many are hiring just for the holiday season, but sometimes that can turn into full time employment. Fun for a while anyway- the main drawback is you spend a lot of time on your feet and most don't have casual dress codes. (other drawback for me would be that using my employee discount made a huge dent on my paychecks!) I worked one Christmas season in the toy department of a large "high end" department store. LOVED it! And you do have a lot of sales experience, too. Its probably too late for a seasonal UPS job but also worth looking into.

I don't think Ron deserves the blame for dragging this thread into the muck. Before the exchange became so heated, he was simply defending the right/ obligation of the police and FAA to investigate the accident. In doing that, he was also setting his own personal feelings aside and suggesting others do the same and look at the whole situation with more detachment. Whether locally this has become more of a witch hunt than an investigation is really a separate issue, isn't it? One that most of us are not in a position to comment on as we are not familiar with the local politics.
-
The thread isn't Best Living AMERICAN Actor, its America's Best living Actor. You could argue that's any actor who makes films for the major Hollywood Studios regardless of nationality. There's nothing "Americentric" about it!

A cloudy morning and they already were backed up? Cut the DZ a little slack. And the "I don't give a damn" attitude? Is it possible the manifester was already having a crappy morning when your friend approached wanting to know why he was bumped? Is it possible he had a bit of an attitude himself? Then again, at my DZ I'm pretty spoiled. We usually have one plane set aside for fun jumpers and another for students. But when we're down to one plane and there are a lot of students, we've got a long wait in between jumps! And the loads will get shifted to accomodate the students after a weather hold- that's just how it is!
-
I don't know- we always refer to the first load as human wind drift indicators. It takes the pilot a load or 2 to dial in the spot for the rest of us! It really depends on the circumstances but generally teams and staff have priority for the first load(s), which is how it should be. And like it or not, sometimes the students also have to come first, too. If you are continually running into a problem of getting bumped- not just the first load, but throughout the day- THAT might be something to look into. But one jump, one morning? Get over it.

So, caffeine is good for you again? This is all so confusing!
-
Its clean and there are no month old take out containers or pizza boxes. What's up with that?
-
A sugar daddy to pay for my jumps and gear, and a pack bitch. It can be the same guy, that's Ok with me!

What, they're going to sue her for doing exactly what she's known for? One network paid good money to follow her around with a camera behaving just like that and now someone wants to sue her? If she was invited to the event or allowed backstage, it's their own fault and they have no right to sue.

Well, there's Dennis Franz but he got his shot with NYPD Blue and did well with it. They even showed his ugly naked ass on prime time TV! And his character ended up with not one, but two babes. But you are right- for the most part Hollywood places too much emphasis on good looks. The ugy guys get the supporting "character" roles, and the less than attractive women usually don't even get those.
-
I thought David Carusa was awesome in NYPD Blue- he created a very complex yet sympathetic character- he really made that show the first season. The only thing is, he's played pretty much that same character ever since, including his role on CSI Miami.
-
Tom Cruise impressed the hell out of me in Interview With a Vampire. Never in a million years did I think he could pull that role off but he did. He's still creepy, but I don't think he's that bad of an actor. Oh, and I would kick HIM out of my bed! (Maybe us ladies should start a new poll!)
-
Agreed- put me down on the list for not kicking George Clooney out of my bed!
-
OMG! I thought I was the ONLY person on the planet who felt that way about Dances With Wolves. As for George Clooney? He's hot, he's funny and he was really great in Oh Brother Where Art Thou! I haven't seen too many of his other films, but I did love him on ER! I think there are way worse actors but out of those 3, I'd have to say Keanu Reeves.

I would like to see this at the top of every message board I visit!

Could you forgive somebody who murders your loved one?
tigra replied to Bigwind's topic in Speakers Corner
Maybe its true then that there is no true selfless act. Good topic! -
I don't necessarily agree with it, but it IS the law of the land, by all indications he broke it and he shouldn't be treated any differently than a citizen of Singapore would. Sad, but maybe someone else will think twice before they try for "easy money" in a foreign country.

Forgiveness is something you do for yourself. It doesn't mean you forget. It doesn't mean its OK. It means you set aside the anger and bitterness that's disrupting your life and move on, something much easier said than done. Could I do it? I hope I never have to find out. -
I think the double standard goes beyond the legal system, since the jury needs to come from regular citizens. The prosecution took what they could get with the family's OK. If they felt confident about taking the case to an impartial jury, they would have done it, right? Yes, its wrong and the defense's claim that she's too pretty for jail is outrageous. How about the woman in Canada who served only 12 years for participating (with her husband) in the rape and murder of at least three teenage girls, one of them her sister. The judge just lifted all restrictions from her parole. No checking in with authorities, no parole officer, no registering as a sex offender, no restrictions on future employment involving children.
-
Its definitley CSC that continues to make that claim. And YES, its lame.

It IS silly school yard bickering. But your taking pot shots isn't? "Is this guy your Ex?" Geez. But everyone ELSE needs to grow up! I'm simply pointing out that the guy is trolling, going out of his way to bait people and then he's sitting back and enjoying the show which everyone else is compelled to put on for him. So, no he's not my ex and there's no real moral indignation here or any resentment. He's not worth my time. I've actully had some respect for your comments even when I didn't agree with them, but in this case, I think you are way out of line.
