  1. I could say that the government doesn't help matters by encouraging farmers to grow and produce certain products over others, but then this thread would end up in the speaker's corner and its scary over there!
  2. You might want to read all the way through this thread. A number of people think the game is sick, but pretty much everyone agrees if you're on the list, there's a reason. And that reason is far more important than whether or not the game is legal or appropriate. I could say more, but I doubt it would sink in. Which is of course part of the reason you made the list to begin with, right?
  3. That came out during the whole "low fat/ fat free" craze. Products loaded with sugar and other crap were suddenly good for you because they were low in fat! Right................!
  4. Nope, I'm thinking of Splenda. I like the stuff, but not everyone can tolerate it. I'm pretty sure its on the warning labels too. But generally, there are only problems if you eat mass quantities of the stuff, you know, like a pound of gummy bears? I agree about saccarine. I do remember Olestra- fake fat wasn't it? Even the label on a bag of chips made with it warned you about "anal leakage" or something? Never touched the stuff!
  5. Well, who told you to eat a pound of gummy bears in one sitting? Actually, some people are more sensitive to it than others! I know at least one person who can't tolerate it at all, but its never really bothered me.
  6. Regardless of whether or not you can use it now, you won't be a student forever. Is it a good deal, and does the helmet fit well?
  7. Most of this is actually old news. The only thing fairly recent is the link to cancer in lab animals. Funny, since the product was developed to replace saccarine (still used in many sugar free products) because that caused cancer in lab animals too! Splenda seems to be the new zero calorie sweetener- maybe they did a little more R&D on it before they put it on the market. Doubtful. It won't be long before we start reading horror stories about it too! (Worst I've heard so far is that too much of it will give you the trots!) Still, as most people will tell you, once you've made the transition to diet soda, going back to the regular stuff is darn near impossible! Its been over 20 years for me, and I can't touch a regular Coke or Pepsi!
  8. Captain and grapefruit juice, huh? I'll have to give that a try one of these days!
  9. I know a guy who did that but he somehow figured it out before he jumped. He unpacked and sure enough, there was his altimeter!

    Waahh

    Beat me too it!
  11. I bumping this up because I want to find out how the trip was! Did you jump? How were the landings?
  12. I agree about the horcrux. Dumbledore wouldn't commit murder, nor would he split his soul while he was alive. But if there was another way, if he could have sent his soul into something while his body was dying, knowing what was at stake, I think he would have done it. Of course he made it pretty clear that he didn't think death was something to fear, and that Voldemort's fear of death and dying could be his greatest flaw. So who knows? And I agree, Alan Rickman plays Snape perfectly. All in all, I think the movies have been very well cast!
  13. Snape is a great character. Very conflicted and complex. I do think in the end he'll prove instrumental in Voldemort's downfall. Draco Malfoy isn't nearly so complex. He's just a mean spirited spoiled child. No way he's going to turn "good" by book 7, but he *might* find himself running from the Death Eaters and needing the protection of the Order of the Phoenix.
  14. I think he goes back to school because the last Horcrux is there. He needs to be enrolled there so he can look for it. I also think his final confrontation with Voldemort will take place at Hogwarts.
  15. One of my sisters also does an excellent job balancing a career and motherhood, and I honestly don't know how she manages it all. She makes it to the ball games, recitals, etc., and chauffers them to music classes and football practice, and they STILL manage to sit down at the dinner table together more often than not. I think she's a freak of nature! I forget to feed my fish when I'm working too many hours! Dealing with a child's busy schedule on top of my own? I give her and ALL working moms a ton of credit because I'm not at all sure I could do it myself.
  16. A lot of women in my mom's generation ended up in that situation or worse. A lot of women in MY generation are a little wiser as a result! The sad thing is, a lot fewer kids get to go home and eat lunch with their moms like I used to be able to do when I was in grade school.
  17. Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you are selling it, why don't you know what it is?
  18. Alimony *seems* to be far less common these days anyway. But since you seemed so entirely against the whole concept, I thought I would point out that there are times when it is entirely justified.
  19. Maybe you shouldn't "have to" but the reality is, do you want to be completely financially dependent on your husband? My mom was and it didn't work out so great for her. We all- men and women- need to be capable of supporting ourselves. You never know what could happen. The tables are turning anyway, like it or not. In my relationship, I'm the "fiscally responsible" one. My sister's husband stayed home with the kids, and when they divorced, she had to pay him alimony for a while. Now he's got full custody of their kids and she pays child support.
  20. There's a time and place for alimony. My father walked out on my mother after 30 years of marriage. She supported him while he was in college and stopped working outside the home when she started having babies. She wanted to return to work once we were in school, he told her no because it wouldn't look "right" to the neighbors! (Like he couldn't support his family or something! Where and when I grew up, there were mostly stay at home moms and divorce was unheard of!) When he walked out, she was in her mid 50s, not the greatest of health, and had been out of the workforce for over 25 years. (Not exactly ready to rejoin the workforce- at least not in a job that would pay enough to support her.) I think alimony was appropriate in that case (call it a pension plan for managing his household and raising his kids for 30 years!) but after a few years, he found a sympathetic judge and weaseled out of it. She lives with me now because she has no income aside from social security.
  21. Well, you can say the same thing about auto insurance. The responsible people who have it pay outrageous premiums to offset the deadbeats that don't. Also, shopping. Prices are higher to offset losses due to theft. it goes on and on.
  22. Honestly, its not *just* illegal immigrants. There are times when someone who is considered indigent (including young, healthy employable people who are either unemployed or underemployed by choice) will get better healthcare for free than someone who does work and pay taxes but does not have sufficient health insurance. (That person will be wiped out financially before he can get any assistance whatsoever.) Its a screwed up system.
  23. Wow- that's really pathetic. I guess you're trying to make a statement about the healthcare system in this country AND illegal immigrants, but all I see is someone who lied to get out of paying a bill. I realize how tough things can be without insurance, but couldn't you have at least tried to work out a settlement or payment plan?
