Soft reserve ripcord banned in Finland !!
johnny1488 replied to BMFin's topic in Safety and Training
Would a cypres have saved here? If so should that be manditory? I am a firm believer that we are the masters of our destiny and we should make our gear choices. Force information about gear and safety down our throats, fine but dont hold my hand. Given the proper information I think we would all make safe gear choices. Get people in a safety harness and make them pull the handles to see if they can. Banning the handles wont bring this girl back. Lets find a way to keep it from happening again. learning curve and canopy size
johnny1488 replied to superstu's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
After taking a few steps back with scott miller this weekend I would definetly say you will not only learn faster on a bigger canopy (not an accuracy mind you) but you will learn faster on all of your chutes once you have rock solid skills on the larger one. Not that my opinion changed after talking with him but only reinforced and showed me new ways of looking at it. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
I got 350 jumps from my safire before I changed the lower brake lines. I was far from a line set on that thing when I sold it. It will last if you take care of it. It will wear like shit if you dont. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

I recently moved from a safire2 169 to my current crossfire2 169. I am loading mine at about 1.4:1. This canopy opens like a dream, soft and on heading, hunted back and forth a bit and opened on heading everytime. Pull the slider down and let out the chest strap and you're on your way! The glide on the canopy is insane! Push the rear risers apart an inch or 2 and you WILL outglide anyone in the sky! The turns are very quick and powerful. The front riser pressure is probably a bit lighter than my safire2 and the canopy really wants to dive once you start. The canopy is also more responsive to harness input. Upon landing you will shock yourself with the power of the flare. And then when you go to step off, you have some more flare power. This canopy makes you feel like you are flying a solid wing not an inflatible one. Icarus has once again set the standard for high performance canopy design. Watch the competitions next 9 cell ellipticals come out with fully elliptical planform shapes and fully formed leading edges. You can not lose with this canopy. Research this company and you will be convinced they really are the industry leaders!

At 400 jumps, you need to find a cleaner place to pack. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Did "the swoop revolution" ever come out? I was looking through an old parachutist (jan 02) and I noticed an article on the video. Did it ever come out or did it morph into "out of the blue"? The phone # and email address didnt work. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

hahaha. Nice one! I believe any ram air canopies can have a defect in them. Whether that be funny opeings or a built in turn. I have heard the figure of 1 in 100 thrown around by a few reputable people. Consistantly funny performance is something different. Depends on how the company handles it. I've never jumped a vengeance(but would if I had the chance) but am in love with my new xfire2! Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Did you take a canopy control class?
johnny1488 replied to Michele's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I got done with a Scott Miller camp yesterday. I have hunted for every scrap of flight related info for the past 2 years so I kew a bit but I still learned a lot. I now have 475 jumps and like to consider myself a very safe jumper. I have been doing some sort of HP landing for the past 400 or so jumps. I have done as much as 180's to pretty nice landing. Scott had me do straight in approaches and I learned a whole lot. Not that I couldnt land straight in but the better it got the better my swoops will be. We went from how to land a straight final to a braked approach to harness input and carving. Granted I only got 5 jumps, none higher that 4 grand, one from 2100, but I have plenty of stuff to keep me busy for a while now. Well worth the money (and not much of it either). Chest Strap Loose and Slider Down
johnny1488 replied to fundgh's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I agree it helps all aspects of flight but I found the most affect on the use of the risers (back for glide front for turns) And turns in genaral feel more stable, I think because any input from the canopy translates better to your harness in a straight line w/o the slider in the way. Oh yeah harness input to, dont forget that one! Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
Sounds like your stuck with a container that wont hold your main. You can always get your money back for the Icarus if your not completly satisfied. I dont think getting a safire2 189 into a mirage that would hold a safire1 189 is impossible. I would try it out first. Dont go getting a smaller main just to fit in your new rig though. No, I was too yesterday. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

If I needed or wanted a car I would. Not only dont I want payments but the insurance for a person under 25 with a loan would put me in the ground. My $600 jetta suits me just fine. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

wow this is a lot to go through. And to think they sent me one like 4 years ago and I cut it up because I wanted nothing to do with credit cards. Ive had a few apartments (all illegal). I've been at my job for over 2 years and the previous one for 5 (both off the books, im on for $75 a week now.) I do pay my insurance but have no utilities (I will never own a cell phone, hopefully) I am applying for a gas card when I get home from the gym in a little bit. I guess I will start with that. Thanks to everyone for their input. Continue all you want with the hijacking. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Capital one turned me down too. Thats what my girlfriend has. I am gonna have her call them and see if they would let her cosign. They started her at a $300 limit when she was a student and now she is up to $3k. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Friend of a friend. Worked at a dealer. New kid was changing the oil on a car and asked one of the techs if this was enough. The kid proceeded to open the oil fill on the valve cover and the engine was FULL of oil. The entire engine. He was fired on the spot. I know of engines that size that take under 5 quarts, but some cadillacs take 9 or 10. On that mustang I'm almost sure it is 5 though. Broncos with 5 litres take 6 and a lot of ford vans take 7. edit to add: My 1.8 takes 4.2 also but you cant go by that. I dont know of any car produced in the last 40 years (save the vw bug) that takes under 4 quarts of oil. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

Sears denied me today Insufficient credit. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

"Now all I need is a major credit and I can get your application approved." How the hell can I get a credit card when they deny me for no credit history? No banks around me offer secured credit cards anymore. I dont know why, they just dont. Here is my plan. Enroll in community college. Apply for a student card. Cancel the classes and get my money back. Commence with building credit. I am leary of online cards who claim to be so easy to get. Any Ideas? Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" When did you go to an elliptical canopy?
johnny1488 replied to superstu's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I bought my safire209 at about 100 jumps (quick start an elliptical debate!!!!) I now bought my crossfire2 at just under 500 jumps. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome -
I've been boxing for 2.5 years now ever since my first "ranch fight night". There is no other workout IF you try hard. If you are looking for an easier way to work out and get results then boxing is not it. If you want to push yourself and work hard at it you will never ever give it up. The only thing that could build more stamina, maybe, is hockey. Try to hook up with a good trainer and see if you like it. Its definetly awesome.
