  1. If it bothers you that someone has suggested that you may be too old to jump--just go somewhere else. Florida is full of great DZ's! Started when I was 51. My learning curve is still slower than your average young guy/gal. I'll never be a swooper, but I'm starting to get somewhat profcient in CREW. Skydiving is a great sport. Don't let some wuffo manifest chick get you down. And, BTW, have you checked out Static Line progression? Much cheaper and slower, not so much overload as AFF. 2. When I was working on my A license I thought that everyone with a D was an expert. Then I got my D. Ain't no experts here.

    Math Puzzle

The error is believing that the original equation is correct. It is, of course, designed to trick you. In one of my incarnations I taught fifth grade math. Kids who can do basic computations often become baffled when confronted with word problems. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Another way of saying this is each man paid $9 which includes the tip for the bellboy. Thus: $30 - $3=$27. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

  6. Cheap plastic goggles are the best, in my opinion. Get the ones with no edging so that you have maximun peripheral vision. The ones that look good often do not allow you to see well, IMHO. Make sure you can see your handles! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  7. Lost my C-card decades ago but IMHO the primary difference in the two sports is this: Scuba is SLOW Skydiving is FAST This is a profound difference; in fact, they are in no way alike. Welcome to the sport! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  8. Many--to the love of my life, my wife of 24 years. Shucks, I'm a hopeless romantic. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  9. Do some actual research--jump! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  10. In 1971, after a long sleep-deprived weekend of partying and then finishing a night shift at the mill, I fell asleep on my motorcycle. Woke up when I hit a telephone pole. Youth. 12. Where can I get velcroless CRW-type toggles? I jump a wings container with mini risers. Thanks, Dave "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

    Oh no!

I've been a plumber for thirty years (this month!) and I have never used a pair of Vice Grips. What is it with Vice Grips? They seem to be awkward to me. I usually use a hammer when I repair a toilet. Croc "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." 15. In my very limited experience I have also noticed that most SL students have a great deal of trouble with stability, backsliding, turns, etc. in freefall. But I also think AFF students are more likely to be ignored after they are cleared for freefall. At a smaller DZ, without a huge investment to recoup in the student program, I suspect more attention is paid to the jumper who is cleared for freefall but not yet licensed. That having been said, everyone learns differently. We had a SL student who made several attempts to make his first jump but could not overcome the open door. He came back and jumped later that year. He had taken AFF at a nearby DZ, finished in one week, and already had his C license! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." 16. Well someone apparently has to say it out loud; the correct word is "role." Yours for better diction, Croc "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  17. Menier's disease can be triggered by trama to the ear (e.g. wind in freefall), noise (e.g. wind in freefall), and generally, chaos (e.g. freefall for a newby). My solution was to get a helmet that enclosed the ears rather than the Protec I was wearing. Take care of your ears--Menier's can be completely debilitating. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. recruiting people

We don't get anything but I'm told that if one of our students should become a world champion the instructor gets a pullup cord. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  20. Are you talking Lightning? They are not called Lightning for no reason. I put about 100 terminal jumps on my Lightning (rolled the snot out of the nose) and it still opened so hard that jumpers would run out of the hanger when they heard me open. I do not recommend taking a Lightning to terminal unless you are very good at sitting up on deployment. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." 21. Landing off can often be a big deal and ALWAYS must be approached with caution. You cannot avoid obstacles that you can't see. Last year an experienced jumper broke her femur at our DZ when she landed off due to a bad spot. At the last moment she suddenly realized she was going to hit a barbed wire fence. Off landings are by their nature dangerous. From 100' a dry creek bed looks like a level path, and power lines are invisible. Even slightly sloping ground can throw off the timing of your flare. Know your outs and plan ahead. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

    Hook Knifes

I have the same knife that erdnarob has, and I've tacked the pouch under my right mudflap. Also a Crewdog friend of mine has one of the Benchmade knives. Very heavy duty. P.S. The plural of "knife" is "knives". "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
  23. Paid $89 for my balloon jump at Rantoul, BTW, the best jump out there, even better than the jet. Give me a call if you get it set up. If my canopy gets back from PD, I'm in. Croc P.S. We'll talk him down. $195 is WAY too much. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy
