  1. so a man is walking along a street filled with restaurants some of which have outdoor seating...
  2. big day today september 16th... anniversary... for jmy... This date marks the day I enjoyed my First Flight in ANY airplane....... also the same day that i made my # 1 parachute jump... it was 1972.... i'd never been IN a plane before...( i was just a kid, and had never FLOWN, anywhere) a year and a half later,,, i had almost 200 jumps when i first ever LANDED in an airplane.... true story.....4 years ago i was near the very airport where i did my static line training,,,it was 9-16... That airport was a DZ for only a short time, back then... but is now still a fairly active airport , with lots of G A aircraft, and a flight school. so anyway. i am nearby so i think to myself,,, "I'm gonna stop by there and just walk around a bit..." I always can recall that first jump day, VERY vividly,,, even though it was so long ago..( it was a saturday) so, anyway,,, I pull into the parking lot, and while there were many parking spots, up near the buildings, for some reason, I pull to the right and park off on the far edge of the lot... I get outta the van,,, and look down, at the blacktop.... and see... a Penny... a copper penny... well i'm the kinda guy who WILL pick up a penny,,, and so I do... I look at it, check the date, and nearly faint.... It is dated 1972.......I swear on a stack of bibles... It says 1972... and this was in the year 2004..... whoa.... so i thought THAT was pretty cool... stuck the coin in my pocket, strolled around a while, shot the breeze with a few pilots, then left to continue my work day.... wild , weird and Wonderful!!!! jmy
  3. i had a mod tell me one time, that they Can't read PM's.... was i just gullible?? andy9o8...sure thing..can you gimme any names??? PM me !!!! hahahahaha... and tmaricle55. sorry to jump your thread for "old timers" day... but it was the only way to reach andy9o8... and besides.... i knew you'd be cool with it... we're pals...
  4. exactly..... hit that water wrong,,,get the wind knocked outta ya'..... uh oh.... then it's downstream, fast.. cool idea. though.. a longer arm , more power means a farther throw.. the seat looked well thought out, and it seems like launch instructions include, "lay back throughout the take off".. Ok cyndi.. have at it sister!!! let us know how you do...
  5. hmmm well that explains it i was trying to PM you to say that some long ago jumpers from Seneca Falls had gotten together at Kingers place... about 7 or 8 of us...in early august... here are a few jpegs... as to the original question.... If they Are from YOU tmaricle55,,,, i save 'em forever!!!!!!! j t
  6. well done, for you and the others who 'stood down' to coach... real decent of all of you. babykillers?????? what moron would take that attitude regarding any young Man or Woman, who has joined the service.... While i do NOT think highly of the war in Iraq... i would direct my anger at the LEADERS,,,,,the Politicians, the "deciderer"..... and NEVER at the soldiers... in many respects, they too are victims of the war... despite heroic and stalwart actions, based on their enlistment oaths... Not sure who said it... But WAR IS hell... nobody really wins... and the ones who "start it" do not often think it through,,, before barging ahead....and as we will witness here shortly.... Those who brought about this calamity, ( Bush Cheney Rumsfeld, and their "advisors" ) will simply disappear into their retirements, write their memoirs, collect their pensions, enjoy secret service protection, and leave the mess,,,, in the hands of others.... fine piece of leadership...... may those and all returning service persons be spared the horror, which is.. P T S Syndrome.... I'd rather see AirForce One used to bring troops home from that quagmire, in palatial comfort,,,instead of used to cart GWB from DC to crawford,, or ANYwhere for that matter,, in a style FAR beyond first Class travel....and way beyond what he has 'earned', based on his lousey tenure these past 8 years.... good for you and the other 2.... good for the returing soldiers... and shame on the naysayers,, jt
  7. when the chance comes up EVERYone should make a night jump. it fun, it's exciting. it adds to a jumpers collective experiences, and when shared with friends,, is quite memorable...
  8. i get the concept of negative ground speed.... and that MIGHT be in strong AND consistant headwinds,, such as what could be found at upper altitudes... but these ground winds,,, must also come with a lot of buffetting, and gusts, etc... Sure a 4 engined turboprop Hurricaine Hunter plane,, has to fly into and out of the storms which it is investigating, and can likely handle it..."white knuckled pilots" and all... but low flying aircraft???? closer to the ground?? just doesn't seem safe to me... jt
  9. yes. the point of view, is definately MOVING,,, and seems to be a few hundred feet off the ground... unless the winds have blown away any pole or building mounted camera.... it's for sure footage from an aircraft.. i am guessing helicopter, but it could be a fixed wing aircraft, i suppose... jt
  10. ... soooo i am watching the morning news programs, which are showing us Live shots of the coastal areas near galveston... and I am wondering WHO the HEck is flying ANYTHING,, let alone a rotor blade machine in winds that are reported to be 80-100MPH??? do they start out somewhere else, and then fly into the storm area, and then return to a place of lower winds to land??? what gives?? I figured that most aircraft would be staying on the ground, whenever "Birds are backin' Up " any pilots out there?? who can enlighten me??? jt
  11. this country has always been about opportunity.... and the Republicans HAD their opportunity, when they went ahead and STOLE the 2000 presidential election.... OK we said,, these guys have some "up the sleeve " tricks.. lets SEE what else they can do. well then we had 9 -Eleven... then Afghanistan ( sp) , then Iraq, then Katrina........ and the BUSH admin... showed us that their tricks were mostly about cranking up that Militaristic Machine , and turning it loose... ( wish i had bought stock in General Dynamics, Lockheed_martin, halliburton, Mcd-douglas...) sooo the way i see it , they HAD their opportunity.....and robbed the national coffers,, ran up the deficit, did mostly NOTHING for the people of THIS country,,,except to RUIN our standing overseas.....and to portray us as invaders,,,NOT Liberators.... so Now it's time to VOTE OUT THE Incumbents.... THAT alone, is reason enough to vote for Obama. jmy
  12. i've heard some good things about the fun dives, and smiles all around, on jumps where Janet is the L O ...>>>>
  13. automatic parachute packing machine.... drop in the rig and main 5 to 7 minutes later, a closed container with Pilot chute stowed,,, and tuck tabs tucked.... slides out the "completed' slot... jt
  14. The Wheel Of Misfortune... or Upon receiving the tobacco company's settlement from the lawsuit,,, the plaintiffs celebrated..!!!
  15. If i could go forward or back, in time, but had to remain at the same latitude and longitude, where i am at the moment,,,, the choice between the future or the past would be tough..... i would choose 1000 years ago... i would have made a good Iroquois Indian, native to these finger lakes areas.. 1000 years ago, before the 'plague' that was the european explorers.... things here were FINE>>> Well established communties, fresh water and lots of it, lakes rivers streams...salmon and trout,,, ( Good protien and brain building Omega 3 fatty acids.... waaay before health experts knew about it...) ,and absolutely ZERO,, pollution , contamination,,, lead, mercury etc... Plenty of sunsoaked fields for crops and woodlands for hunting,,, Lots of game, though no buffalos.....but turkey, deer, geese, ducks,,, and smaller ground mammals... The women raised crops, and did lots of the work.. and were allowed to raise the kids...hahaha The men could go hunting, or work on making tools and weapons, they could sit around the fire, or hang out in the Long House... the Iroquois had it good... especially the guys...
  16. and then as gawain points out...many people mishandled the responsibility of property ownership...over bought, or tapped the house for seconds, and equity loans, to "catch up on bills",, ( consolidate.... was the official lingo...)only they simply extended the payback on those bills, and backed it with real estate that may or may not have been able to stand the test of time. i have sometimes thought that the Real estate industry, the mortgage industry, the appraisal people , and yes even attorneys,,, orchestrated the scenerio which led to the housing bubble . It took 20 or 30 years, but in many many places, the price of houses rocketed... . Intentionally or not, they all led the housing market to an unrealistic surge....especially the last 10 years or so...... and it happened,," because they said so.."... appraisers pushed the limits, the real estate folks, loved it, cause they all worked on commision...banks saw mortgage loan AMOUNTS, climbing,, and when that happens, and you're making interest on it...it's a good deal.. The 'keeping up with the Jones' aspect of American Society kicked in,,,and Attorneys just greased the wheels. They made it all happen, took their cut... and prices went sky high, in many places... Now we are told that these lenders, are broke??? well sure the foreclosure rate is up, but the VAST majority of people are managing to stay ahead of things. lots of people were smart,, and did NOT over buy... "just cause they could have"... those who failed to follow that approach, sadly, now pay the piper.... For a mortgage of an 100,00 dollars, at 10 % interest , over a 20 year span, ( 240 months) requires a total payback of 231,600 dollars. a 30 yr term brings 415,720 back to the lender.. of course that's over a long time... but what i'm driving at, is for alll the years where loans were being paid, and monthly payments were continuing, and the majority of borrowers were doing ok....those outfits took in lots and lots of $$$$$... which i presume they were using to lend to the next person... I think rates today, are in the area of 6 % but when we bought in the mid 80's they were 14.... i used 10 % in the example because it was easy to look up...
  17. beach demo.... at 14 grand??? areas close to water can be notorious for having winds, ( think offshore breeze) which are different than what may be happening at the DZ ,, further inland from shore... i thought the remnants of hanna, hit the New england area on sunday??? ,, but maybe THAT all blew through, saturday night... i'd be real careful about beach demos... especially if my reserve repack is recent... a mandatory re pack after a water soaking... will add to the cost of the dive... glad everything worked out OK.. did the jumper get OUT of his gear...upon 'touchdown'??? were inflation devices worn?? By EVERYone??? were any arrangements made for "pick -up Boats"?? Sounds like the 'rescue' was done by lifeguards, who "just happened to be nearby"..???? "in the ocean, 1/2 mile away???" yikes. any word about how good the Seafood was??? did they have lobster!????
  18. as mentioned many times in these forums... if your helmet is carbon fiber... be sure to keep ALL cameras and camcorders FAR away from the area, while you're drilling or reaming. Then clean up the drillings as thoroughly as you can... carbon fibers are conductive, and if any small shards, or debris, find their way INTO your cameras.... it's bad news... just spreading the word... jmy
  19. mostly said in jest... but I might reconsider those with whom i was jumping if none were able to stay on top of things... yes of course.. I too would be to blame. so likely few people would want to jump with ME... only... i NEVER found myself really down and dirty. and i doubt i ever would. I'm old school, and i take very seriously, the fact that base has altitude responsibility, even when it hadn't even been discussed.... this was hypothetical..... jmy
  20. first i'd make a mental "note to self" do NOT jump with these 3 people, again... then i'd kick mself for not being altitude aware, then i'd fire my reserve, in an effort to beat the cutter, to the punch.
  21. not following you here.. if a reserve which is aad activated is believed to kill an unconcious jumper... then wouldn't it also likely kill a concious one,,,, who simply has a situation where it's deployed at terminal.....?? are you meaning killed at opening or at landing??/ some feel a small reserve, without proper toggle control,,, might land them somewhere troublesome,, and it might hurt them when it happens,,,but it also might NOT.. hell. i'd feel it's about 50-50... A reserve with it's toggles stowed and depending on wind speed, may have some forward speed.. but if the dz is sizable, and your angels are on the job,,, you could do just fine...
  22. had a bad right shoulder for a while,,2 or 3 semi-injuries, over the years, wear & tear.. when the double gripped 6 way out of a casa tumbled, my right shoulder dislocated and finished a bunch of tears...had to pull my reserve.... time is needed,, recovery is slow and if you did the bone damage which you've described, i'd guess you also did alot of muscle and/or ligament damage.... the bone may well be fused back together, but's it's only less than a year since you were hurt... Unless you had a MRI scan, and not just an X -Ray,,, best to go easy, especially with what you've called, "that chicken -bone" move... My dis-locate was in july '05, arthroscopic surgery, Nov. '05... follow up surgeries 3 months later, when an infection which was brewing since the repair, finally surfaced, and needed attention. the entire shoulder joint was affected end result. .. infection cleared, but it compromised the "tenuous " repair. so in all of '06 i made two jumps. well i've been jumping since i was 19.... and certainly intended to continue jumping,, ( that was one of the reasons to accept the dr.s 'recommendation' to "just have it fixed" )...Yeah??? well he fixed it allright anyway on the # 2 jump which i did make in '06..i was unable to locate my P C handle..due to poor behind the back flex... I had felt that my deployment move would be good, and it was,,, on an earlier H & P that same day... and that Maybe..... I'd have it tough to get the right toggle...well,,, it was the other way around...so i pulled my reserve..and accepted my limited reach... i adhere to the P T excersizes and still 3 years after the dislocate do pulleys and stretches a few times a day... cause i want to see continuing improvement, i want to keep jumping... i want to stay safe so In '07 i DID have my rigger switch my gear over, to left hand B O C ...and have had Zero issues with it.
  23. bravo...nicely said... one of the best things about skydiving , is the fact that sooo many top flight," A plus" Women, share the sport with us . smart, pretty, brainy, level headed,,fun,,, Many, able to fly circles around lots " of the boys out there", and often with great senses of humor .. confidence, maturity, security,,,,
  24. i like the second picture... straight
