  1. Hopefully this will make some people realize that socialized medicine isn't the cornucopia that Moore portrays it as. That really isn't hard core proof, just someone making that claim. I haven't bothered to see Sicko as I know how bad it is here in this country from my own experience and from those around me. I don't care if it is better elsewhere, I just want ours to get better but I don't see that happening anytime in the next decade or so as there is no money to be made by improving it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. I never cared if a DZ was a tandem factory as long as I could still jump there. Outside of a few DZ's that refused fun jumpers I've never seen how allowing the DZ to pay its bills was a bad thing. As Kallend said, teams and tandems never got in the way of me jumping at my home DZ. Nor did it ever get in the way of my jumping in my travels. That being said, is it me or is there a massive drop off of 4-way teams at Nationals this year from previous years? I remember the last time it was at SDC there were over 40 teams in the low end bracket. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. SO I have decided. I am changing my party affiliation to Repub so I can vote in the Primary for Ron Paul. He is the best candidate out of any other on both sides. Obama lost out to him from everything I have read on both to date so far. For those that missed the Fox debates with the 3 questions he was allowed to answer while openly mocked by Rudy, you can find them here. As a reminder all the other candidates were allowed 9 questions over the 90 minute event: http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/124528/Ron_Paul_at_the_Fox_Debates.html _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. In college I didn't sleep much. It was standard to see me awake 2-3 days in a row without sleeping. Taking 20 credit hours while holding a job, having to do work study, homework, all the vocational development stuff the seminary required, and trying to break into the Chicago media market at the same time took away all my free time. Then there was the girlfriend, the Thursday night drinking fests, and trying to find time to swim. I had a pretty routine setup that way for two years. I lived off of Mt Dew, eating raw coffee beans and tons of water (that is the real secret to staying awake for long periods). You also have to eat very sparse during that time as you are low on energy and trying to process a meal will almost knock you out cold. And I did all of this without any sort of illegal drug use! Sometime after I hit 30 I found I couldn't push it without sleep anymore. I have to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night now if I want to be fully functional in the professional world. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 5. I grew up around one of the larger airlines with my Dad working there for 46 years. They have always had a dress code for flights and in later years that dress code was listed on the dependent tickets (I had to wear a suit every time I traveled under my Dad's name) and then later on it was listed on tickets for everyone. Not where it is now in this age of print up your own tickets. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. It seems I need to get out tomorrow and purchase this book. I've been reading a lot of news stories about it and I'm boggled that Bush actually said these things to his Biographer. For those that don't know, Draper interviewed Bush six times in 2006 in extended sessions. Apparently he had nearly full access to his staff as well. Draper writes for GQ and interviewed GW when he was in charage of Texas as well. The most damning bit is best summed up by Countdown host Keith Olberman here: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/09/04/countdown-special-comment-you-have-no-remaining-credibility-about-iraq-sir/ Here is a bit from that clip you can find streaming there: Some very interesting bits in the book: The First Lady called Rove "Pigpen" or "Boy Genius" both in negative context and thought he was a necessary evil. She also would get angry over Rove getting too much credit instead of GW. The Author felt Bush was almost uninterested as Katrina approached the Gulf Coast in 2005. When he showed up from his vacation at the emergency briefing, he was so "gassed" and exhausted that he didn't ask any questions during the briefing. Bush admits to bouts of crying over the Iraq War and that he cries out of public view to appear strong and instead cries on God's Shoulder. Bush admits to seeing Ghosts come out of the wall in the Lincoln Bedroom. Bush said he was creeped out by the White House when his Dad was President. Rove apparently rebutted a Republican Senator that said an invasion in Iraq wouldn't be welcomed by it's citizens. He in fact imagined the response would be like the US entering Paris in WW2. Bush plans on doing the lecture circuit after his term to "replenish the ol' coffers" and make "ridiculous" amounts of money just like his Dad and Clinton. Bush recaps his hated for the UN saying he wouldn't be found in the hallways of the UN like Clinton after his term is done. Many have seen the news in the last two days that Major Policy decisions were made without consulting or informing Bush. Apparently the book highlights the lack of communication and mismanaged decisions in the administration. For instance, Bush didn't know that Paul Bremmer was disbanding the Iraq Army in 2003. Bush apparently doesn't know why the Army was disbanded when it was the initial policy to keep it together. However Bremmer is now claiming in the press he had full support for his actions. Anyhow, this looks like it could be a very interesting read. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. Let's see, this summer I read: All seven Harry Potter books. I was surprised at just how much I got sucked into these books and how great the entire story line is. I'm glad I was able to sit down and read them all over a period of one month without waiting. The Great Transformation: The Beginning of Our Religious Traditions by Karen Armstrong (a tough, dry read by very informative. Have had the book for some time and finally sat down and read it recently) Charlie Wilson's War by george Crille (An amazing book esp. in light of everything that is going on in the world. Will be a movie this winter). Hocus Pocus and Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut. Don't bother with Hocus Pocus. Cat's Cradle is something I tend to re-read every year and to date is one of my all time favorite books. Prey and State of Fear by Michael Crichton. Prey has to be his best book to date and doesn't fail on the end like all his other books. Failed States by Chomsky. A very sobering reading experience. Everything's Eventual by Steven King Watchmen graphic novel - even if you are not into comics, this is a must read. It redefined the standard of how a comic book could spin a complex story with real character development much like any other novel. Some of this you have already seen stolen by the TV show Heroes (even thou the creator of that show claims to have never read a comic book in his life). House of M graphic novel. Civil War graphic novel(s). Currently reading the entire Bourne Trilogy I know I forgot a book or two in there, but I'm pretty much kicking out a book a week now. I have no pattern to what I read either. I go to Border's or Barne's and just wander in there for an hour or two until I find something that catches my eye. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. And by not showing it, you may have given that to them. I haven't read the fine print on the back of the receipt in a few years but I think something about it used to be there. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. It was in reply to what he said before about using the same receipt to steal the same merchandise several times in one day. They mark them to show you have already exited before with that purchase. If you did a trade in on something, a 2nd receipt is given to you for that with the changes noted. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. They have a policy to place a security tag on your bag or they ask you to check the bag in. This isn't just big box stores that do this. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  14. My house is private property too. I don't have the right to search any of my guests before they leave just because they came on my property. Do you think a store has the right to search someone who came in and didn't purchase anything? They can't search you, but they can call the cops and ask you to wait for them, esp if the LP guy is a cop. At least here in Chicago they can, and I saw it happen while I worked at Best Buy in the early 90s. You just call the local PD and tell them you may have a possible theft and they tell you to keep the person in the store till they get there. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. They don't do a strip search, they call the cops, you are arrested and searched there. The store is private property, not a public gather spot, and they have the right to protect their store up to the point you walk out the door. In the bigger stores, esp around the holidays, this is nearly a daily occurance. The Loss Prevention checkpoint is there just for that, to prevent loss. Remember, you have a choice here if you don't like the rules, don't shop there. But really, give me a fucking break that showing your receipt matters that much to you. Clearly this is a huge issue. Big Box stores are a police state, right? Whatever. Oh, and that is the reason why the mark your receipt on the way out, so you can't just keep walking in and out of Circuit City all day with the same purchase. Yet another reason why they ask for the paper before you leave. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. http://www.slate.com/id/2173107 Proof from an Iranian that he doesn't like his life there, doesn't like the clerical rule, but DOESN'T want Bush or the US to invade/bomb. Of course, it may not be a direct invasion: http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/05/bush_authorizes.html The ironic thing is Bush telling the Iranians they can do better, have better leadership and have a better government. I'm sure they have just as many options to remove their corrupt leadership as we currently do. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 17. I think you are going a bit extreme on your sway here. If you have ever worked in a retail big box store you would be familiar that they have to build in to their daily numbers lost revenue from missing merchandise. In some of the bigger stores this amount of shrink can match the total daily revenue of smaller stores. For a company like Circuit City this does result in multiple millions of dollars lost every year. I worked at Best Buy after college for a few years and would have to work Loss Prevention while the security guy went on lunch. The thefts that happen right in plain very are numerous. People have makeshift ways of disabling security tags and hiding merchandise in plain view. Some even bring in their own store branded bags to smuggle things out. These stores can only prosecute someone for theft once they pass the cash registers and before they leave the store. The corporate lawyers cannot show intent unless their is video with that proof. Once the customer is out the door, the company has taken a loss. In addition to this, these stores have a repair shop where broken items come in and out quite often during the day. Thus, the only way to prove that someone is leaving with their merchandise is to show a receipt with the date on it (the repair shops issue one as well for this reason). If these big box stores did not perform this, the amount of shrink would increase and only two options exist from there 1) Go out of business 2) Extended the loss to the customers. There is nothing illegal that I know of that prevents them from asking for proof of purchase before you leave. If you don't like it, order online and never go into a retail shop again. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 19. The first few seasons were better. One or two things to bust and an entire show to work it out. Now its more polished, its obvious the setups are taped aftewards and none of them are good enough actors to pull that off. Now it feels like Mythbusters for the ADD crowd - 7 myths busted in 60 minutes and they must force using their catch phrase even if the testing isn't completed (the recent baseball show just annoyed me at how much they didn't test with the corked bat). Oh ya, Kari is hot and I swear I've seen her wearing a particular type of collar in the early seasons. And ya, they should bring back Scotti _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  21. Does that mean any other culture that received a raw deal along the way should be free to do as they want without regards to the law? This isn't a perfect country and that list is very long. It would be anachary if you said "well, he had a rough childhood, he isn't responsible for his adult actions." Um, there may be many people that are racist banging the drums on this one, but he broke the law. In addition to that, he is a celebrity and this world is obsessed with watching the mighty fall in front of live TV. Do you feel the villification of Britney Spears poor parenting is racist as well? Of course not, but its in the same vein......"if it bleeds, it leads." In other words, the media will crucify anyone in the hopes of raising ratings to make more money. That's all this comes down to. My personal reaction to this? I think he was pretty dumb for what he did - how did he think he wouldn't get caught with his fame? After that I didn't care much about it and changed the news channel. I think most American's who have their own life to care about have put that much thought into it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. I'm going to back Renee up on this. Just stop, it's not worth it. I've seen family members of my friends pass from it and just weekend I buried my father who passed because of it. Here are some of the things they don't tell you, and how it will impact your family: 1) It is a very violent, painful death. Your body works against you and the Dr's often have their hands tied due to your body no longer working to help you out. Like my Dad: To keep his BP up they had to give him fluids, but his veins couldn't retain the fluids and it went into his body and lungs. Trying to keep his heart going meant he would drown in his own fluids. Imagine trying to breath with over a quart of cancerous fluid in your lungs as your heart can barely push blood thru your body. Meanwhile you lose enough weight to look like you have been starved for years. They can't give you pain pills without killing you because it will lower your respirations, so you are stuck living with the pain until you finally pass. Your breaths become short and quick, each one more painful than the last. The pain and lack of oxygen causes your entire body to shake in pain until the vey end. But before that your eyes glaze over and you lose your site, you don't have the strength to lift your arms. If you had a clear head at that point you wouldn't be able to talk and let them know how bad it was or how sorry you were because you don't have enough air to speak. You are stuck inside your body as a prison living with the pain and unable to say goodbye. The site of this helped three people I know quit in cold turkey. 2) The cost. Imagine buying a new reserve canopy every one hour for weeks. That is roughly the the cost of one medication that was on my Father's IV....and that doesn't count the units of blood, saline, etc. Then add in the cost of the line that needs to be put into your body so you can readily get an IV or chemo - it would be the cost of a full new rig. Then there is the cost of the room, specialists, chemo sessions, etc....all adding up to the cost of a private university four year education in the matter of a few weeks. 3) There is a good chance you will not get any warning signs. There will be no pain before hand or anything unusual. Next thing you know you will be told that you have Stage 4 and are terminal. You won't have time for that final skydive, that final vacation, have time to write your memories down, get your estate in order, pass on that final bit of advice and most likely not have enough good days left to contact everyone you want to say goodbye to. It can happen as quick as a total malfunction and leaves you with almost as few options as one. This isn't fiction, this is reality and it does happen. It will happen. I saw it happen. There are no handle checks here. Wake the fuck up. Too many smokers, like my Dad (he smoked from age 12 to 67), are flippiant about their addiction. But is that myopic attitude really worth everything that you will put your family thru. Just don't fucking smoke, for fucks sake. But let me guess: that won't happen to you, right? Yea, my Dad used to say the same thing. While you are at it, why don't you just go toggle hook it low on a overloaded canopy you never jumped before in the middle of heavy traffic....I'm sure you will be the exception to the rule, right? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
