For those who want to see the Simpson's Movie...
ChasingBlueSky replied to psipike02's topic in The Bonfire
Through comcast, my torrents have been rediculously slow, like 2 hour movie takes 2 days. They are slow because you cannot seed torrents in most Comcast markets anymore. It will only get worse from here on in. Expect to see an offer to pay $/month to get faster access to certain cites, protocols, etc. Expect to see MS offer to pay more to have MSN run faster than Google on Comcast, etc. This is coming despite all the "Save the Internet" or "Net Neutrality" stuff that has been floating around. There is money to be made and Comcast is desperate to get it. Also, once this takes off, expect AT&T/SBC to do it as well. Sad to say that in the US, that will be almost all the broadband in this country. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... If you use Comcast for internet you may no longer have access to torrents as of this week. They have started their Tiered Internet access. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Sorry, I was really tired earlier when I posted....I wasn't clear now that I reread what I posted. I did and have been going to the hospital. Dad passed away earlier this morning is what I meant by it's all over now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Well, it's all over now, it happened only a few hours after I left the hospital earlier this morning. I'm exausted and headed back out to the hospital in just a few. My thoughts are everywhere but in the end I'm glad I went. Thank you everyone for their help on this. I will say this: If you smoke, stop now. It's a violent, ugly and painful death. There isn't anything they can do to make you comfortable in the long run. Consider what you are doing to yourself and to your family. Then consider the cost it will leave upon your family at the end. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Nope, the 'surge' sure isn't working, is it?

Remember my comment on be careful what you read and how the OP may be just posting fluff.... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/13/AR2006021301897.html But I'm sure someone will call out something about the leftist agenda in regards to this topic. The Surge must be working, if you were to believe the OP.....and of course the US is safer from terroism since we haven't seen the Threat Level raised in ages (the last election??) You have to wonder if those in the Bush administration will one day see their mistakes in hindsite like Atwater did.....and apologize to the nation. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... ChasingBlueSky replied to mnealtx's topic in Speakers Corner
My thoughts are those family connected to those that died today don't find it minor nor believe the surge was working for them. Cherry Picking? If that's what you want to call it. But then again, who is putting out the numbers that this surge is working? With everything else that is failing in the middle east due to this war, wouldn't the OP be cherry picking as well? POV is a bitch. Do what I do - set up RSS feeds that cover any story related to this topic. It's insteresting to see what comes out from where. It's also interesting to see who skips what. At the end of the day, however, there are at least 175 dead people over there. That is what really matters. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -

How is the reconstruction going? 117F there the other day and most of Baghdad was without power for the day, and even worse they had no running water for 7 hours. From what I read in the news it was from a failed infrastructure and not insurgent related. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Who is editing Wikipedia? Proof by IP addy!
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Since this source has been a hop topic in this forum for some time, I thought that a few would find this interesting. A programmer created a scanner that looks at the IP addy associated with Wikipedia edits. This has heavily been on Slashdot and Digg today, so traffic is a bit high and it's running slow at the moment. You can use this link: http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/ to search by organization, IP range and by target page. This launched yesterday, but the geeks are hard at work trying to identify what edits have come from IP directly associated with some companies. There is a predefined list of IP addys that you can already search by as well. Anything of interest? According to WIRED: http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/08/wiki_tracker You can find Diebold changing information related to their voting machine scandals, Election Campaign offices changing information to better suit their spin, the CIA entering information related to past events....or just talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. FOX News has been busy there and you can see their editing agenda herehttp://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/f.php?ip1=12.167.224.224-255&ip2=12.30.108.96-127 and this one is fun: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=25221039 The original entry said: And was changed by someone at FOX NEWS to: This one is funny, and you shouldn't read it if you want anything from Harry Potter past the 5th movie spoiled for you....but someone at the GOP decided that they needed to delete most of the Potter Wiki about the 6th book and replace it with one line that spoiled the entire thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=19338858 Care to find out what else has been found? Want to report some impressive spin jobs? Go here: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/wikiwatch/ You can see Microsoft, Disney, Exxon, Fema, Dow, Walmart, Scientology, Monsanto and a few others in action. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Y2k bug in NASA GISS data (global warming)
ChasingBlueSky replied to mnealtx's topic in Speakers Corner
Just to mix this up a bit - didn't Several new staffers get placed from the White House into higher level positions at NASA? There has been a lot of noise about this on Slashdot the last month or so....and reading blogs from NASA workers point out that its not all for the good. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Ironically enough, they never taught me how to forgive....and that's why I am mad at myself....the hesitation to go to the hospital means I'm more like them than I wanted. In my heart I don't know what I want to happen when I get there. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I've never been big on people coming here for what sometimes seems to be the obvious bit of advice. Maybe I just need to type this all out to get my thoughts in order. But I'm at a point here in my life that has me as a complete loss. Maybe I need the kick in the ass from an outside point of view. My friends are too close to me and have witnessed too much over the years.....so they know what happened and they just are going to support my choice either way. I'm 34 and haven't seen my parents in 8 years. They were good providers, but were not good parents. I can't say that I can remember many happy memories, and have often found myself envious of those that had a happy childhood. One of the reasons I've choose not to have kids is out of fear that I would somehow end up like them and screw up someone's life. Years of issues came to a head when my sister found her Husband. My brother and other sister were happy for her and supported her.....but she was 'disowned' because they didn't agree with her choice.....an action spurred by their racism. This also put a wedge between the kids as my older brother sided with them as well. In turn, the 4 of us were disowned as well. That brings us to today. We were told last night that Dad has Stage 4 cancer and the end is very soon. His stats are terrible, he has stopped eating, his BP was 70/40, and this 6'1" man is now at 125lbs. They caught the cancer too late and have no idea where it started.....they have ceased treatment as of this morning. None of this is really a surprise to me. He has smoked three packs a day since the age of 12 and he is 67 now. That doesn't include the daily drowning in booze. I am sitting here staring at the car keys and can't find the courage to go to the hospital. What do you say in a situation like that after all that history....after they allowed their kids to leave their lives like that. Bitter and angry are two words that keep coming to mind. But I think I am more disappointed in myself as a person for not having the ability to do this. My brothers and sisters have....why can't I? My sister called in tears just a bit ago as she is having a hard time as well. I guess Mom sent an email to her saying she hopes I get to see him. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Never server it as the first bottle of the night. Also, as someone else said - sometimes you get a bottle that isn't as great. Andrea - I think you can mail order it from Traders website. I don't know how true this is, but I've been told the wine is the same grapes that Franzia uses, just without all the excess sugar. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Oh geez...what a crappy statement. Here's a newsflash for you. 'Religious conservatives' have as much ability as you do to know the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Some do - like the Rabbi's that gave permission for the book to be obtained on the Sabbath. Then there are those that have filed multiple lawsuits against the author and publisher. From the Wiki: The books have been the subject of a number of legal proceedings, largely stemming either from claims by the American religious groups that the magic in the books promotes witchcraft among children _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I liked the logic of who was master of the elder wand, and why. It made me go back to OOP and re-read the ending. I thought that was the end of Half Blood at the top of the tower. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19959323/ If you found the epilogue of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” rather vague, then J.K Rowling achieved her goal. The author was shooting for “nebulous,” something “poetic.” She wanted the readers to feel as if they were looking at Platform 9¾ through the mist, unable to make out exactly who was there and who was not. “I do, of course, have that information for you, should you require it,” she told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira rather coyly in her first interview since fans got their hands on the final book. Ummm … yes, please! Rowling said her original epilogue was “a lot more detailed,” including the name of every child born to the Weasley clan in the past 19 years. (Victoire, who was snogging Teddy — Lupin and Tonks’ son — is Bill and Fleur’s eldest.) “But it didn’t work very well as a piece of writing,” Rowling said. “It felt very much that I had crowbarred in every bit of information I could … In a novel you have to resist the urge to tell everything.” But now that the seventh and final novel is in the hands of her adoring public, Rowling no longer has to hold back any information about Harry Potter from her fans. And when 14 fans crowded around her in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland earlier this week as part of TODAY’s interview, Rowling was more than willing to share her thoughts about what Harry and his friends are up to now. Harry, Ron and Hermione We know that Harry marries Ginny and has three kids, essentially, as Rowling explains, creating the family and the peace and calm he never had as a child. As for his occupation, Harry, along with Ron, is working at the Auror Department at the Ministry of Magic. After all these years, Harry is now the department head. “Harry and Ron utterly revolutionized the Auror Department,” Rowling said. “They are now the experts. It doesn’t matter how old they are or what else they’ve done.” Meanwhile, Hermione, Ron’s wife, is “pretty high up” in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, despite laughing at the idea of becoming a lawyer in “Deathly Hallows.” “I would imagine that her brainpower and her knowledge of how the Dark Arts operate would really give her a sound grounding,” Rowling said. Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t join the same Ministry of Magic they had been at odds with for years; they revolutionize it and the ministry evolves into a “really good place to be.” “They made a new world,” Rowling said. The wizarding naturalist Luna Lovegood, the eccentric Ravenclaw who was fascinated with Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Umgubular Slashkilters, continues to march to the beat of her own drum. “I think that Luna is now traveling the world looking for various mad creatures,” Rowling said. “She’s a naturalist, whatever the wizarding equivalent of that is.” Luna comes to see the truth about her father, eventually acknowledging there are some creatures that don’t exist. “But I do think that she’s so open-minded and just an incredible person that she probably would be uncovering things that no one’s ever seen before,” Rowling said. Luna and Neville Longbottom? It’s possible Luna has also found love with another member of the D.A. When she was first asked about the possibility of Luna hooking up with Neville Longbottom several years ago, Rowling’s response was “Definitely not.” But as time passed and she watched her characters mature, Rowling started to “feel a bit of a pull” between the unlikely pair. Ultimately, Rowling left the question of their relationship open at the end of the book because doing otherwise “felt too neat.” Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom: “The damage is done.” There is no chance, however, that Neville’s parents, who were tortured into madness by Bellatrix Lestrange, ever left St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies. “I know people really wanted some hope for that, and I can quite see why because, in a way, what happens to Neville’s parents is even worse than what happened to Harry’s parents,” Rowling said. “The damage that is done, in some cases with very dark magic, is done permanently.” Rowling said Neville finds happiness in his grandmother’s acceptance of him as a gifted wizard and as the new herbology professor at Hogwarts. The fate of Hogwarts Nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts, the school for witchcraft and wizardry is led by an entirely new headmaster (“McGonagall was really getting on a bit”) as well as a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. That position is now as safe as the other teaching posts at Hogwarts, since Voldemort’s death broke the jinx that kept a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor from remaining for more than a year. While Rowling didn’t clarify whether Harry, Ron and Hermione ever return to school to finish their seventh year, she did say she could see Harry popping up every now and again to give the “odd talk” on Defense Against the Dark Arts. More details to come? Rowling said she may eventually reveal more details in a Harry Potter encyclopedia, but even then, it will never be enough to satisfy the most ardent of her fans. “I’m dealing with a level of obsession in some of my fans that will not rest until they know the middle names of Harry’s great-great-grandparents,” she said. Not that she’s discouraging the Potter devotion! “I love it,” she said. “I’m all for that.” _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Remember in the memory flashback? Snape in tears, shows the doe patronus (a representation of his life long love of Lily)? Read the conversation leading up to that yet again.....while it was based off of "I thought it was to honor Lily by keeping Harry alive" Dumbledore confronts him and asks if he cares about Harry....Snape says he always had....it was just him hiding that good side of him as he was prone to do (his main flaw because it showed weakness)....and this ties in again to the love theme protecting Harry....and it was this love for Lily and Harry that Riddle overlooked as he always had.....unless I read it wrong....but that is how I took it. edit to add: Lupin WAS tragic but was key to moving many of the events along in the story. Just like Dumbledore, their relationship changed in Hallows. Harry taught Lupin about life and how to find something to live for. Lupin found his own redemption in the birth of Teddy and Tonks love for him. This is why I feel both of them deserved more to their death than what was there. Also, the "Look....at....me....." part you talked about; I felt the same way. He wanted to see Lily's eyes one last time. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
