Are you among the “HyperConnected”? (Do you even want to be?)
ChasingBlueSky replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm very much connected, but I choose to be and I can ignore it at will. My job is one where the more connected I am, the more successful I can be. I am paid to network and talk to people so I can have access to quality IT talent instantly. At the moment I have a social network that extends beyond 20 million by the time you hit the third degree of separation. The only way I can beat the competition is by reacting faster. Then once connected I need to be in a spot where people can quickly reach me to help establish trust and understanding. This doesn't mean a 90 hour work week, but it could equate to 2 business calls on a Memorial Day Monday. Sometimes having access to my email and database via phone means I can avoid making those calls at all. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I'm a huge comic book fanboy and have been for years. I was able to escape and enjoy most comic movies in the last few years and feel that flicks like Batman Begins and Ironman were incredible and more than just comic book adaptations. I saw flaws but found nothing to nitpick. Frank Miller has always been one of my all time favorite artists and his work on The Dark Knight Returns, Year One and Sin City were always in the tops of my collection. The Sin City movie was a work of genius and Batman Begins did fantastic job of adopting the Year One story line. However there were films like Perdition Road and X-Men that were not all that close to the source material and I still enjoyed them despite many of their major flaws. Indiana Jones 4 is just an abortion of a movie on so many levels. I'm certain it will be used as an example in film classes on how not to make a movie. I would go so far to say that the movie will have more than a 50% falloff in revenue this coming weekend and by the end of the summer Batman and Ironman will have made more money than it. If you want to see me get all fanboy-ish, ask me to talk about The Watchmen and how nervous I am that it was finally made into a movie and will be released in March. There isn't a better comic/grapic novel out there and shows like Heroes have directly ripped some of their story lines out of it. edit to add: If you have watched the fan feedback about Indy 4 on Rottentomatoes.com over the weekend you would have seen it gone from a 90% initial down to 60-ish% as of this morning. With Ironman you had the inverse happen. Most of the local morning shows here were all giving it negative reviews. Word of mouth will kill this movie. I'm not alone in thinking this either. No one in my office enjoyed the movie and I've only spoken to one person that had anything good to say about it. Then on one of my favorite movie watching blogs I found this today: We got over 2025 votes on our poll and 266 comments. While the majority of readers who voted in the poll Loved the film (41%, while 18% voted “It Sucked”), the comments on the post were largely negative. I decided since you guys put the work in, I’d dig through the comments and bring you a best of - a compilation of the funniest or most interesting comments left about Indy 4. Enjoy! Josh: “I totally cracked my friend up at the end of the movie when I turned to him and said “I know I’m Jewish and all, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this… but I miss the Nazis.”“ jonny: “Fake us all out with a big trailer that makes you think this film is huge and will fucking suck. But instead the film is only 15 minutes long and ends with him dying in a nuclear explosion… Thank you for treating me with respect!” Greg: “How many people loved Transformers last year? I did. But, the story… aliens come down from another planet and turn themselves into cars. How is that different (or more importantly, more believable) than the central theme in Crystal Skull?” Rob: “The top 5 things I hate about this movie (in no particular order). WARNING - SPOILER ALERT! 1. INDY SURVIVES A NUCLEAR BLAST - WTF? 2. Shia swings from vines in the jungle with a family of monkeys - I shit you not. 3. They drive a jeep over three 100 foot waterfalls and survive without a scratch. 4. Space aliens and a UFO does not belong in an Indiana Jones film! 5. Kate Blanchet’s character is destroyed by knowlege; really? If I see George Lucas out in public I’m gonna punch him in his turkey neck.” Seth Rogen: “Hey you! Yeah, I’m talkin’ to you. If you’re an adult and you hated this Indiana Jones film, that’s because you went to a kids flick. Kids movies are ridiculous because kids are insane by nature. If you want to see an action movie for grownups go see Pineapple Express out August 8th. Word” Cogezek: “It kind of felt like they rewrote the script dozens of times over 19-20 years.” marcomc2: “I just got back from a midnight soul raping thunder slaughter of shit.” Justin: “I like that aliens are too hard for people to believe but mystically powerful Jewish zombie wine cups are okay.” Thumb: “So I’d say that George Lucas didn’t rape the corpse of my childhood, but he gave it a good, rough tongue-kissing. … There will be no aliens in X-Files, but there ARE aliens in Indiana Jones? Am I on earth 2?” Simon: ”Harrsison and Shia made a sterling effort to try and turn a big steaming pile of dog turd into something watchable. … I’m going to take a deep breathe and count backwards from ten, and forget this film ever happened.” Tom: “Awful. I knew it was going to be bad as soon as it was revealed that evil Commie Cate Blanchette revealed she was psychic.” Simon: “If you’re an Indy fan then prepare yourself for two hours of cinematic soddemy.” Allynd Dudnikov: “This was the best Allan Quartermain movie yet! …oh wait.” Captain Awesome: “Indiana Jones: National Treasure 3” … “The cock-slapping plants were hilarious.” 790: “Maybe for the disinfranchised fans we can have Indy digging up dinosaur bones in the next film, while Mutt goes back to high school and trys to cope with the divorse?? Meanwhile Marion can sue for Indys college retirement pension and setup a restraining order? Would that ground the film in reality for ya?????” _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Treky type? Meh, not at all. I'm a fan of movies and film and it was part of my college studies. I also live in a family with two actors and one documentary producer and I help them out all the time. I just know a piece of shit when I see it. And I don't get sucked in to like it just because it shares the title with three very classic movies. At least it wasn't JarJar and The Phantom Menace. I think the only reason this wasn't a complete steaming pile of shit was because of Harrison Ford. Nation Treasure 1 and 2 did a better job at Indy Jones than this movie did. There wasn't anything as classic or iconic as the first three, there was no real plot, the story never felt like it cared about the tale it was trying to spin....it was just another setup for more special effects, poor lighting and an obvious sound stage setting. The exposition was boring and dull and felt like they were trying to make the "Divinci Code" audience happy. If your read this: http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/05/two-new-indiana-jones-tv-spots-harrison-ford-implies-that-george-lucas-wacky-ideas-are-stupid Harrison Ford rips into Lucas a bit. It took 20 years to make these movies because Lucas wanted them to be more like the groundhog/JarJar type of "comedy." And SPOILER WARNING: Here is a short list of what was wrong with this movie 1) An opening that didn't do anything to help the movie. We had a race with some kids and it was a direct nod to American Graffiti. If you look at the first three each of them had a small little story that we joined in media res. This did nothing for the movie and then bam, Jones is stuck in the back of a trunk. Ya, that really matches outrunning a boulder or trying to catch a vial of antidote. Most of the Young Indy Jones Chronicles had better openings. After 20 years that's how they felt it was the best way to reintroduce us to the character? Epic failure there. 2) Apparently the most secretive base with some of the most deadliest weapons in all of the USA has 3 guards. 3) The gun powder best shows how illogical the plot device is. If gun powder and gold are pulled to the skulls, why aren't the nails, lights, roof, or other crate contents pulled to the Alien body in it's storage spot. And really, they moth balled an organic creature?? 4)Dumb bad guys with no personality. Only Kate's character talked and the guy from Saving Private Ryan just stood there looking like he had gas. All previous movies went into some depth with several of the bad guys. As to their intelligence: they can't look over the only hill of dirt in the middle of a vast area to find him by the rocket (and what the fuck was the point of that rocket ride)? From there we get a fucking quick cut that jumps a large amount of time (middle of night to mid morning) and somehow they are still looking for him with only one car, and why are they even looking for him....they didn't look for him around the rocket, why go all the way to that town? 5) And what the fuck was up with the gophers. Are they supposed to be representative of the audience? If not they are 100% pointless and wasted time on film and editing time. The worst part is that this was all done in post production and they felt it needed to be added. 6) NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS ARE NOT FUNNY. He already set the tone of the movie in the very late 50s, we didn't need to see an explosion, or a flying refrigerator. Plus he likes to makes movies for kids, so congrats on giving nightmare imagery to every kid this weekend. Who knows, maybe it's because I grew up in the cold war and can remember things like "The Morning After" and the media hype it caused. But this just ruined so much for me.......and it led to them passing on some of the best parts of the back story (Colonel Jones). 7) College Town. There's a great chase scene in there. However the obligatory "Indy in an academic location setting up the plot" was disengaging, and half the notions were a lark anyway. 8) Crazy Guy. Seriously what was the point? Its like he was out of a bad Goonies script. 9) Turncoat Guy. Now I'm bad. Now I'm good. Nuh uh I'm bad again. No really I'm good. Okay. Why should we care about this guy again? I get that he was supposed to be an old WWII buddy of Indy's, but he isn't made endearing to the audience at all. 10) Conquistador tomb. Hi, we're Peruvian ninjas who hide in walls. There's only like two of us, so punch us in the face, continue on, and forget trying to think of why we were even there trying to pump kick you in the face. 11) Forest vehicle chase. Should be classic and easy Indy material, right? It was mildly entertaining, but didn't draw you in anywhere near as well as an Egyptian car chase, an Indian mine car ride, or a Mesopotamian tank battle. Also, what the fuck, Tarzan and attack monkeys? The only good part about it was the killer ants and the waterfall...but where did Karen Allen go for the entire race along the cliff? She goes off screen for the full thing (and the stupid monkeys) and comes in towards the end of the ant scene. But at least we had an America's Funniest Video moment of Mutt getting hit in the balls a dozen times (that was worth the 20 year wait, right?) Also when I saw the ending I said out loud: You know it's bad when they have to rip off the X-Files movie ending. Outside of that it was some of the worst editing I've ever seen. It wasn't logical and did nothing to help with the pacing of the movie nor help understand location. Because of that John Williams had nothing he could do and his musical themes were fully absent during the entire film. Also, did anyone else see some of the same story lines related to abandoned kids and a quick rush into love/marriage across Episodes 1-3 and this? I think Lucas is fleshing out his personal baggage in his movies Part of the problem with Lucas is that he went from trying to emulate the teachings of Joseph Campbell to everything needing to be about the "MacGuffin." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Campbell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin Also, Indy Jones worked best when it tipped it's hat to the classics. This entire movie believes its 20 years of press and doesn't do anything to feel like those older films. The nod of maybe passing the torch to Mutt Williams at the end felt forced and unnecessary. Combined with Lucas saying he wants to do a 5th where Indy plays a roll like Connery did in 3? Fuck that. I watched these movies because of Harrison Ford nailing that character. It would be like Shia trying to fill in the shoes of John Wayne or Clint Eastwood in any of their legendary rolls. Just let a good thing die. Don't make a 5th! And what was with Indy calling himself Henry the entire movie? Is that supposed to make him feel all grown up? The man was in his 40s in the last movie and was still going by Indy. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Terrible movie all around. One of the biggest shams I've seen in years. You can tell it's a mish mash of scripts that span the 20 years. It's an insult to the fans. I wrote up nearly 100 reasons why the movie sucks, maybe once spoiler time passes I will post them. (Why doesn't this site has a /spoiler bookend?) I hope George Lucas never does another movie again. I've never walked out of a movie but the opening sequence alone nearly caused me to do so. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... England: ‘Big Brother’ database for phones and e-mails
ChasingBlueSky replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Did you look at my reply at all? Did you read the quotes? Did you visit the links? Did you do any of your own research? England? Fucking Hell, the same exact shit is already in place in the USA. Wake up. Free access to anything on the internet. ANYTHING. Encryption can easily be beaten and they can get most of the security keys from companies. I assure you even if you are not a Verizon customer, at least half of your daily internet usage crosses their network. If not by you then with the businesses you utilize. Do you realize how many bits of personal information is traded across that network? There isn't one ounce of privacy in this country. Do you own a cell phone? Do you use an American bank? Do you have a car with any new toys (On Star, etc)? Does your company use the internet? Have you purchased/registered a gun? Have you used a credit card or check card? Do you send email? Do you post on internet forums? Do you use IM? That data is bounced around the net every day. Our United States government looks at it as they please. There is no way to stop them either because GW continues to push to give them amnesty for breaking the law. Remember that when you vote this fall. McCain supports this, Obama doesn't. If England frightens you, what do you think of that? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Would This End the NO DRILL Rules We Currently Suffer Under?
ChasingBlueSky replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
It's been said for years: Until America struggles to pay for fossil fuels you won't see real alternatives pushed through. Why? Big business never wanted the changes to the infrastructure because they didn't know how to milk our money from it or how to get a better return on their investment. Right now I'm paying the same amount for gas that I did a few years back because I carpool and split the gas costs. I'm also in the market for a very small, fuel efficient car that has some flexibility to it. Instead of bitching about it, I'm doing something about it. I will continue to make adjustments. Drilling under our country for a few extra gallons of gas will not stop the demand from the East on other reserves. It's a stop gap that will last only a short period of time and will not resolve any problems. Where you are sitting back and demanding for this so you can maybe save $2/gallon at the pump, we are sitting here and looking back at what we warned 10, 15 and 20 years a go and saying "told you so." There would be no need for this conversation if us wacky leftist environmentalists didn't get laughed off the stage at the time. Instead of trying to destroy our environment and spending billions trying to find the oil and building a new delivery infrastructure, the effort should be 100% focused on change. This will NEVER get any better. If something is done, this entire country will collapse. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... England: ‘Big Brother’ database for phones and e-mails
ChasingBlueSky replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Hate to tell you this, but that database is a formality at this point in time, at least in the USA. Verizon, MCI(now merged) and AT&T have given full access to their entire communications network. In fact it's been validated by a former Verizon employee that he was responsible for creating the access point for our intelligence community: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/03/whistleblower-f.html This happened in 2003. Anyone that supported the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretaps helped this come to pass. Why do you think GW was pushing so hard to give the telecom's a free pass on any laws they broke helping out his administration spy on us? Then there was this: http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/07/fbi-would-skirt.html Big Brother has been here since shortly after 2001. Myself and the rest of those crazy liberals can now sit back and say "told you so." Maybe now people will slowly start to watch other things besides FoxNews and not read the Washington Post (or anything owned by NewsCorp). We have been pushing to make sure his damage isn't perm: http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_richard__080518_why_bush_cannot_be_c.htm http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/05/illegally-spy-on-americans-win-fabulous-prizes/ But I doubt we will see anything good happen: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/02/senate-approves.html and http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=8905 Don't let him give the Bell companies Amnesty for what they did! I just didn't wish it took two elections, 7 years and 100,000 dead people to realize this administration was corrupt. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... What did Michelle Obama Actually Say?
ChasingBlueSky replied to likearock's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm proud of anyone who says what she did, missing word or not. A true American with patriotism in their heart challenges and questions everything. We have the freedoms that we do because someone was willing to ask questions. I'd have even more respect if a Presidential candidate was able to handle the spin. We would then see less of the bullshit Rove and GW pulled over the last 7 years (IE: either with us or against us, you can't be for the troops and against the war, you are pro terrorism if you are anti Iraq war, you are anti American if you think we were at all responsible for the attacks on 9/11, etc.) I didn't listen to the youtube version of the speech. Which is the real version and why didn't Obama bring that up at the time? Photochops and audio doctoring can go either way. Yet again, this should be another reason why you should question everything and do your own research. Who is at fault here? No idea but I wouldn't put it past either side to do such a thing. However I do suspect FoxNews and the Rove puppets more as they have a solid decade of precedence of spreading lies as truth. Nonetheless, what she said is not an issue and shouldn't have had any impact on the election. This was a talking point driven into the mainstream by Fox along with the "no flag on his suit/no hand on his heart" bullshit. They can't stand on their own platform (plus need a distraction so you don't hear her talking about the 8 years of mistakes they made) so they create negative press that will echo longer in the minds of the casual voter who only partially pays attention (just like a marketing department that creates annoying/catchy jingles so you are "tricked" into your purchase). Anyone that repeats this shit is only helping to undermine our election process and I would go so far as to call them un-American because of it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Clearly I need my gov't to investigate drug use in baseball, football, etc. Just leave that to the courtrooms. I've never understood how they can fast track a congressional hearing on roid use but not on war crimes that came from the White House, or on election fraud, or campaign funds, or whether foie gras should be banned or.....etc Also, there is no need for the gov't to be a parent from their pulpit. Putting in legislation on how to raise your kids is overstepping their bounds. edit to add: Or just take a look at the Mayor of Chicago and most of the Illinois Govenor's to get plenty examples of how corruption leads to terrible choices for the public. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I was half expecting to hear "I voted for the tax cuts before I voted against them." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c Time for those GOP folks to pull out their Kerry flip-flop sandals and place McCain's name all over them. Nice to see that the Rove talking points, damn the lies, style is still a stronghold with the GOP. They are hoping on the short term memory of the American public to win the election for them. From day to day the platform will change depending on the audience. Then they will toss out words like "appeasement" and hope no one goes and looks up the definition. I must say I am saddened by this. A few years back McCain was someone I would have voted for. When he went against GW he was against that machine and that style of politics....even a victim of it (re: black child out of wedlock). I can't believe he is allowing this to happen. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

After reading the article I understand the need for the raid. But the public intoxication part. Seems odd to me. I wonder what the local laws are for that. I know that is one arrest that only tends to happen around here when people get out of control. In Chicago it often gets overlooked except during an election year. You know that every 3 years at the St Patrick Day Parade you will see arrests for holding beers on the sidewalk but not during the in between years. Facts are still facts. Your data points still show that temps have decreased since 1998. I've never liked the term Global Warming. I always likened it to a child saying "hard math" when looking at a Physics question and trying to explain chaos theory at the same time. The only real fact with our climate is that we have changed it. We have been changing it since we first stepped out of the muck. Is it it possible that our current abuse of our planet can have more than one impact? Could it be possible that cooling and warming are both happening because of us? I don't think in our lifespan anyone will come up with conclusive evidence that we have damned the planet into a hellish weather cycle from which it will never return. My take on the Global impact of humanity has always been this: Don't fucking worry about the planet, worry about the people. I don't care if that coal plant could be hurting the ozone, I care that it is killing more people than we can even imagine. The rules and laws setup for polution control should be focused on taking care of ourselves. Now, the side benefit to that may be a better ecosystem as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Then do you classify McCain in there due to the preachers he has shook hands with on a political stage recently? Obama has distanced himself from his former paster and the words he said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXZbIGJrDkg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qNi7tPanUA If you dismiss McCain's connection to them, then you need to drop the connection of Obama to his former pastor. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I see it as reality. edit: I made an edit in the quote you gave as well Ok, thanks. I understand your position but it comes across a very anti-religion. Not trying to be a smart ass. Just what I seem to see in your post It's no secret that I no longer practice religion. Most of that comes from how I saw the Catholic Church function from inside when I was looking to be a part of its ruling class (priest). You can say it opened my eyes to many other things as well. It forced me to look at all rulesets and realized they are all the same thing. Religion is just another name for it and made dangerous by attaching a belief system to it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I see it as reality. Everything is subjective, laws are just a common ruleset passed on by those in control of power. Often those in power are put there because most don't want to have that responsibility. Therefore they will fight to the death to defend what that representative has put into play. Laws, religion and morality only fit a subset of the population and will never encompass everything. Therefore by default they will always be flawed. edit: I made an edit in the quote you gave as well _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Both of those are just rulesets with stories and imaginary consequences put behind them to force the population to believe in them. Then they add a bit of fantasy to them, put out of reach goals behind them as carrot on a stick....and keep people chasing their tails for an eternity. Then when they need to rally the troops they claim people are trying to take the carrot they want so much away from them. So basically what you are trying to do is find which control system you most want to believe in and hope that its right. So which is the better one? Ideals or fantasy? They both have the same function and want the same result: to get people to do things their way and change their own opinions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... It's a very dynamic and subjective measurment decided by those who are in power at the time. They try to say it is based off the community standards, but those are never documented and they never say what community. Now that people realize the neocons will be shifting out of the central roll of power, they are pushing back against their ancient definition of whats right and moral. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Nope, it doesn't. And ignoring what white on black racism has done to the black neighborhoods is ignorant. Now, being a progressive voice in an angry area becomes a bit of a trap. You are looked to for leadership and to be the shinning light looking out for them and you are forced to be ever progressive. That is what has happened to Rev Wright. Now the question is, why is it any worse that Wright resorts to some extreme words and false generalizations than the ones Bush has spread since 2001 about Iraq and Saddam and that terrorists hate our freedom. I know that neighborhood that Wright is based out of. I did some work out of the Catholic church there and it is a very depressed area and has been for my entire life. The only time it started to pick up is when White developers realized they could use some gentrization tactics and build $750,000 condo's there (and they were given tax breaks to do so!!). I don't agree with everything that Wright says, but I do think the man makes some very valid points in other areas. Btw, on the whole Burma aid that GW and his wife pushed to be accepted after the hurricane this week. Why didn't Bush push that hard to have FEMA get money down to NOLA and the lower districts? Why is it that money still can't get into the lower 5th but we go out of our way to send foreign aid to a similar situation? Interesting story on Racism: Had someone on the phone tell me yesterday this: "So, don't find us any black candidates of the job, the last person in this spot was black and didn't perform." .....um....you think this middle aged white guy would say the same thing if it was a white man they let go? As of this morning they are no longer a client of mine. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Frustrated drivers are trying to sell their gas guzzlers.
ChasingBlueSky replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
It's relatively expensive to make, storage issues, the technology is not fully developed and most of all, we don't have the infrastructure to support it. IMO all electric is the answer. We already have the infrastructure AND the technology. edited to add: Going all electric would also provide new jobs and would damn near solve our foreign policy problems. It would? Don't a lot of those power plants that supply electricty come from old world resources? (in fact, don't Hydrogen producing plants do the same?) Unless we saw an influx of new nuke power plants I don't see that changing and I don't see the footprint per car going down until that happens either (factory by products and waste). I'm in an interesting spot right now. About 9 or 10 months ago I saw that gas prices were going up and that I wasn't using my car. Now I don't have a car and can no longer rely on public transportation for my workplace commute. Trying to find an affordable gas friendly car is a total pain in the ass right now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Ya, much better to dismiss a viable option and go for the brute force approach instead. And if you think I am advocating Big Brother, you missed everything I said. You're advocating making MORE information (medical records) available to the government to accomplish the extra screening you want done. I asked you before if you cared about the destruction of the 4th Amendment before, and I also mentioned that Big Brother and all your information is already there and accessable without recorse.
