  1. 159 people have died in the last week. The first US fatal case has now been reported. The scary thing is that the deaths in Mexico have often been of young, previously healthy, adults. No, I do not believe it is a media driven event. 2 million people died in 1968; the 1918-20 "Spanish flu pandemic killed somewhere between 20 to 100 million people. Some economists are estimating that a full blown pandemic will cost the world GDP 5%. The current banking/real estate crises is expected to cost 0.5%. This is as scary as it gets. The crazy thing is, I am not sure there is anything we can do about it. The measures being taken may do nothing but spread the death toll out over a bit longer time. Going to have my coffee now. Here's hoping I have a sunnier disposition afterward.
  2. That wasn't so much a laugh as it was a chortle (....anything that puts a damper on Lisa's day......). And I KNOW what the Ducks can bring come playoff-time.......they put the Wings out in 2003 AND 2007. With that said.........tell them to bring it to Hockeytown......we got some payback fo' they asses. Just beat the hell out of each other over a seven game series is all I ask. The Canucks will be waiting patiently, having dispatched Chicago in four. Don
  3. They used to have a static line program at A&M. Seems they had a problem with the undergrads hanging on with one hand and dragging the other on the ground.
  4. Yes. It is one of those crossover roles between the civilian government and the military.
  5. There are other reasons to love having Meagan, Kat and Sandra on the plane.
  6. What I also find interesting is that the current director of the White House Military Office is a civilian...Louis Caldera. He is former Army, left as a Captain (for those that don't know, attaining this rank is pretty much automatic, and it was 30 years ago). Prior to this position, Mr. Caldera was a California State Assemblyman, Secretary of the Army and president of the University of NM. In the previous administration, the director of the WHMO was Rear Admiral Ray Spicer, who also had a role as deputy assistant to the President. Either way, an ambiguous press release would have done well, "There will be low flying government aircraft flying in NYC airspace, and DC airspace." No specific locations, just a date, etc. I'm not impressed with the "talent" in the White House. I take it you are implying that that is a job that should be filled by a serving soldier. Would a retired career officer do? Do you think the NSA and SecState also should, or is the joint chairman enough? Just how much military presence is appropriate in a civillian government?
  7. In my view timing is more important than placement. The timing on this one looks to be close, but is still on the wrong side of the line. It is always better late than early with a pilot cute toss. I think Bfin's comment about the student going up is very significant. The sitting dynamic exit is not my favorite, but would probably be the one I would chose for that plane.
  8. Watch it again. The pilot chute is thrown before the student actually leaves. The J/M threw it when they felt the student commit, but students have a bad habit of changing their minds. From that position the student would be unlikely to actually stop themselves, but they could hang around for an extra 3/4 of a second or so. It could cause trouble. I have never done an IAD from a caravan, but the tail looks like it is pretty high in flight.
  9. When I was (very briefly) a smoke jumper in Yukon we used to land in short trees on purpose; softer landings. That said, doing a PLF onto a snag was definitely not fun no matter how much protection you were wearing. We were using modified T-10s from 1200'. The Alaskans were using DC-5s and Delta Clouds from 3000'.
  10. This is a permanent problem with all military. We want to train a group of vicious, deadly protectors who will kill without question upon orders, but who really don't want to, who fit in comfortably with civilian society when not doing so. We almost never succeed. This is also true for those who draw up military contingency plans and procure new weapons systems.
  11. In Canada the analogous right has been debated in the supreme court vis a vis DUI checkstops. Certain restrictions were put on them. The police do not ask for papers during checkstops anymore. It is not reasonable to delay a law abiding citizen any longer than necessary.
  12. That I don't know. I just know for certain that it has been landed on at least one runway that is too short for a "stock" 747. I'm gonna guess and say it was well under gross. Scheds have to assume full weight.
  13. It is a deployment system where the pilot chute is stored inside the main container with the rest of the assembly. Part way down the bridal is a grommet; through that grommet slides another piece of bridal material. On one end of that piece is the closing pin, on the other is a handle. The handle is stored in a keeper on the bottom of the rig, right where the throw out handle is on a throw out rig. When you pull the handle the pin is pulled. Once the container is opened you continue pulling until the pilot chute is in the air stream.
  14. Well, moving to Canada because a Dem is in the Whitehouse is a little out there. Kind of like moving to San Francisco because the gays are too open in Wichita.
  15. It seems to me that she is not bigoted at all. She is "pro-choice/anti-same sex marriage." This is a disapproving opinion from a tolerant person. The other fellow is an unmitigated asshole.
  16. The answer is no, most Americans are not that stupid when it comes to politics. There is however a large enough group of consumers that are that stupid as to watch Glen Beck. I currently have a French roommate who believes that socialism begins all discussions from a morally superior position to capitalism. Are all Europeans that naive when it comes to politics?
  17. ???? World renowned? Uhm, ok. you wouldnt know him because you are from canada. Thats not officially part of "the world" So your "world" covers clear over to the county line does it?
  18. I'll make you a trade. I'll agree that all gun show firearm sales should require a background check, if you'll agree that all alcohol sales should also undergo a background check. Deal? Well since we know that guns are not a problem unless in the hands of an asshole or an idiot, and we also know that alcohol tends to make one both an asshole and an idiot, maybe we should just make it that alcoholics aren't allowed to buy guns, and gun owners are not allowed to buy alcohol.
  19. Do you think vendors at gun shows should have to check this directory before selling someone a firearm?
  20. I hope that is not true. International laws should apply to the US as much as any other country. ,..and the rules of gentlemanly behavior should apply to NFL players the same as everyone else. YOU tell the lineman that butted in line that.
  21. clicky I think the part I added in boldface is implied in Obama's statement. I believe the possibility of prosecution by other parties remains. It remains de jure only. De facto no one is going to try US agents in defiance of the US.
