  1. Having worked on DZs that offered both for years, I do believe that AFF students are better flyers at 25 jumps than those who go standard progression. Furthermore I think that difference persists to the B licence level. There is value in teaching people to arch properly from the beginning. The immediate feedback helps. The other reason is risk management. The AFF has a much lower fatality rate. The first AFF fatality in the US (with both instructors actually rated) was more than 20 years into the program.
  2. Actually those on the second from the bottom probably lose the most; everything.
  3. I take it we won't hear from you until then.
  4. I realise the BLM has opened it up to other uses. I think that is a violation of the trust as well. The price of land needs to be incorporated into the price of the energy or consumption decisions will not reflect the true cost. Loss of habitat for cacti and tortoises, loss of opportunity to build suburbs and strip malls, whatever. If government land is used for commercial purposes (should be avoided in general) it should be leased out at market rates.
  5. A good example is variable strength tests for fire departments for men and women. This exists in many jurisdictions.
  6. Maybe because the 2009 tax year is considered one period. Congress can change the tax laws for this year that affect all earnings for this year because they are not due until the future.
  7. The US is a bit different from other currencies as it is the reserve currency of the planet. When uncertainty is high people gravitate towards it, swamping the inherent weakness in the economy underpinning the currency. As things settle down the actual strength (weakness) in the economy dominates and so we see the U$D falling. I think the medium term will see the U$D fall a lot. The only thing that will prevent it is an increase in quantitative easing (printing money) by all the other central banks so we can all have inflation together. US inflation is coming, of that I am sure.
  8. Personally I have very little sympathy for those who want to preserve the desert. Desert is what happens to land after everything else dies. However If private money was spent to purchase this land for conservation purposes then they should be conserved. Perhaps these private companies that want to develop renewable energy should purchase their own land to make a profit on instead of using the taxpayers'.
  9. I don't think anyone ever discounted the value of it. Much like heroin it was decided that the side effects were prohibitive. For heroin it is the addiction, for MDMA it is the nuero-physical problems such as a dehydrated cerebral cortex.
  10. Have you looked into the insurance provisions that come with membership in the Italian federation?
  11. Ok people read the post; clearly he meant 70 jumps not 7. Olivier, You definitely should not buy a Stiletto at your experience level. Good canopy pilots are those who take a canopy and relly learn how to fly it. A Sabre 2 or Pilot or Saphire 2 will chalange you for at least a couple of hundred jumps. If you buy a canopy that challenges you just to fly it conservatively, then that is all you will be able to do. You are going to screw up! Everybody does. It is much better to screw up on a canopy that you are skilled on rather than one that you are at the edge of your ability on every jump.
  12. I couldn't disagee more. If I feel I need to worry about the camera flyer on the tandem, I'm not leaving the plane. In this incident the student took the TM for a ride. Once the tM got stable (he is starting to go fast now) you are saying he should take the time to look over his shoulder to make sure the camera flyer is not incompetent. If there is any delay throwing the drogue the camera flyer will almost always be high; it is their job to recognise that before it happens and move out of the cone of death. If they cannot be counted on to do that, they should not be videoing tandem.
  13. Doesn't he have a new sith to train or something?
  14. This disregard for the rule of contract law by the Dems is very similar to the Republicans disrgard for Habeas Corpus laws after 9-11. "Ya, but these guys are assholes. They deserve it." is not an excuse.
  15. Actually there were a couple of proposed mergers that were forbidden by the Feds overthe last decade. The banks whined that they couldn't compete with the larger foreign banks unless they would be allowed to merge. A few years later it was noticed that the big five Canadian banks all had better ROI than the larger banks they had cited. Sadly though executive compensation was lower, as befitting smaller institutions.
  16. Not neccessarily. If the drug pie shrinks due to legislation it would present an opportunity to shrink the overall footprint of organized crime. I think it would be a very good time to crank up the pressure on the gangs. The shinking pie would no doubt cause several wars. The combination of more violence, fewer rewards and increased police pressure could put a dent into things.
  17. Well perhaps the solution to the first issue is contained in the second. They could be the organized crime administration.
  18. Remember how the business is doing is only part of the equation. What it would cost to replace you is also part of it. What are your prospects of getting the kind of money elsewhere, in this economy?
  19. Thats I nice laundry list of gov't that I assume are goverened by dictators. For good measure lets add N korea and China Unlike the countries listed above In the US we have a legal system. Just because someone has a "contract" that doesn't mean that it's valid. Thats what the courts and lawyers are for. Just because you think a contract is a contract and thats the final decision. Back in the day we heard a term regarding construction contracts that went something like "Just because it says so that doesn't mean what it is. I'm not a Lawyer or even someone specializing in contract law how ever I did sleep at the holiday inn last night. Unless you are a lawyer and you know what the AIG contracts say, well how the hell do you know what the you talking about. R.I.P. Actually only Cuba and Zim are dictatorships. What it is is a list of countries who ignore property and contract law when it suits them. That is pretty funny. If it was about the law and due process the press conferences would not be conducted President, his political flacks and congressmen. This has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with the CinC putting his thumb down and pushing. What do you think the chances of any of these execs not getting audited real soon.
  20. Good luck bud. i quit probably 30 times before I finally licked it. Perhaps you should try staying sober for a couple of weeks.
