OK, let me try to explain. There are two types of numbers used in measuring crime. One is an absolute number. An example would be the number of murders committed in a given year. Then there are numbers per population unit. An example is the number of murders per 100,000 citizens. So Finland's number of murders is low for a number of reasons, including low population. Finland's murder rate per 100,000 is fairly high for a number of reasons, including lower population. Each murder in the US is measured against more hundred of thousands of people. So yes, each murder in Finland counts more when talking about the rate per 100,000. That is just s silly statement because birth rate is always done in real numbers per year. No one measures it against the total population. Actually I have been there. I spent time in Helsinki and its suburbs. If I'm ever there I just might take you up on that guide offer, though. However, you have to keep in mind that because your population centers in the south so outweigh the frozen north that your murder rate per 100,000 is fairly high. That can be tempered with the fact that your actual number of murders is very low. I also agree that comparing crime across national lines, and especially across continents and oceans is a waste without statistical control far over all our heads. However, when people get down on the US for its murders and mention that gun control is an answer, it is useful to contemplate other country's experience with bans. Afterall, just because there are differences, that doesn't mean there is nothing we can learn from each other. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Yeah, I'm sure lots of conservatives would be chomping at the bit to vote for the other Clinton. Your delusions of grandeur are really quite something. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I was trying to say "socialist and heavy handed government" side, not liberal meaning Democrat. Both the American "right" and "left" are guilty of advocating socilist policies. Oh, most teachers I know and that my family work with are plent political when it comes to contract and election time. ...And people wonder why I have issues with public education. Start a new thread on that and I can easily and powerfully refute your claims. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

So I guess you think people exercising their right to free speech are just on a power trip? And people exercising their right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures (telling the cops no) are just on a power trip? And people exercising their right to freedom of assembly, they're just on a power trip? Or is it people exercising only the rights you don't think they should have that are "on a power trip?" witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

That's just freaking scary, and tells me that history teachers are covering the basics of American history. It also tells me that the liberal/socialist attitude is wearing off on students. Yes, I know liberals love to tell us how they value freedom of the press, but when you tell a kid that the government should be running things, well, he may not remember that it's only the things you don't like. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Geez man, when my GI Joes came out of the box they had a back pack, a rifle, and maybe one or two tiny other things. That things got an HK, its suppressor, an m16, its suppressor, knee pads, grenades, extra magazines, gas mask, helmet, canteen and pouch, body armor, an LBV.... Why do all the cool toys show up after I grew up? Ah hell, at least I didn't live in the days of the original linkin logs. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Some people are ok with getting stabbed or glassed, I suppose. Personally, I don't carry a gun because I expect to get shot. Actually, I expect to have a very uneventful day, no knives, no guns, everybody goes home at night. However, if inescapably confronted by a violent criminal, I will not put myself at the tender mercy of his good nature. I'm surprised to hear people say they think citizens here in the US carry only to protect themselves from guns. That's just not the case. The overriding idea behind getting a CCW permit, for myself and most others, is quite simply that "I'd rather have it and not need it that need it and not have it." ps - it's funny (scary, but funny), but the only place I'm ever really concerned about a violent confrontation is when I go to NYC and need to walk the border of Bed-Stuy. It's a scary kind of funny because that's the only place I go that wouldn't even let me own a gun, let alone carry one. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I prefer to be in the driver's seat, but I don't mind if she wants to go bare-back riding instead. As long as we get there. Yup, I like pie. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Never said they were pointless. I said they can't be applied to the entire world population unless you put in a 50% +/- margin for error. It's also fairly obvious that GWB couldn't possibly be convicted of murder in a courtroom. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I'm a big supporter of harsh punishments for violent offenders, and a supporter of minimum sentences. Here in the US a thing called Project Exile was designed to lock up real gun criminals (not BS administrative issues). The final idea was summed up as "Use a gun in a crime, get an additional five years, FEDERAL." They started this system in Richmond, Virginia when it had the worst murder rate in the US. A few years later they weren't even on the radar. Locking up real criminals is the best way to lower the crime rate. (as to your idea for restricting bb guns, well, I don't see the real threat in one, but if it's getting to be a problem, it has to be taken care of. Personally, I'd think sentences for using knives would be a higher priority in the UK, but it's your house.) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

If he bothered to pay attention he'd have noticed that the statistics John quoted specifically exempted airguns, toys, and replicas. I suppose I could admonish you to actually read before siding up and condemning people, again, but I doubt you'd listen either, huh? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Are you freaking kidding me? You can't even say that one third of US and two thirds of non US posters to dropzone.com think he is a murderer. This is a speakers corner poll, hardly a bastion of scientific research. ps - if it ever went to court the prosecutor would be laughed out of the courtroom. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Continuing to speak with you is a waste of my time. At least when I disagree with most people they are able to accept palin facts when faced with them. (spinning or minimizing happens a lot, but at least they acknowlegde the facts) Your version of events and reality as reported by the British Home Office are two starkly different stories. I wish John the best of luck. They are the internationally accepted crimes rates of industrial nations. Yes, Russia's numbers are FUBAR. No one argues that. You should understand that Finland DOES have a high crime rate because it has a small population. Each crime "counts more" in small populations when you are counting per 100,000. Same thing with New Zealand (though New Zealand has some urban issues to deal with that are also responsible as much as it's size). Further more, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT JUST BECAUSE TWO COUTNRYS' NUMBERS ARE OFF, THAT DOESN NOT MEAN ALL THE NUMBERS LISTED ARE BULL. Is that so? You should really look at the British Home Office and decide if lower equals acceptable. (simply admitting that the UK has crime problems as well would be good enough) http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/output/Page54.asp http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/output/Page63.asp Also relevant to this is the fact that violent crime and contact crime are rising slowly in the UK while property crime is shrinking. He never said gun control caused rises in crime. He said gun control doesn't prevent or reduce crime. This is borne out by the UK, where gun control was tightened and crime went up regardless. After the most amazing spike in crime in history. Check stats for 1995. Never heard John suggest that either. Just don't suggest the US should use the UK as a guide in its crime policies. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, and brother let me tell you, if you think John is the kettle, you are certainly the pot. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I also have to point out two major flaws with this little tidbit. First, people aren't killed by guns, they are killed by other people or themselves. Second, there are 8760 hours in one year. There were between 15 and 16 thousand homcides last year, and of those 9,683 were firearms related. That is barely more than one per hour. To get up to four per hour, suicides and non gun murders must be counted in the total. numbers from FBI UCR for 2003 Including suicides is hardly relevant to a discussion on violent crime and murder, don't you think? Kind of blows holes in your idea that statistics supporting gun control are so easy to find, doesn't it? Well, at least if you confine your search tot he truth anyway. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Your data points are about as useful as a Brady Center press release. Yes, there is a problem in the US with the number of people killed each year. However, I have to ask, would you feel better about being killed with another tool instead ofa firearm? If not, this is not really a gun issue, but a violent crime issue. If you want to cherry pick statistics, let's talk about how the victimization rate in the UK is 26%, while in the US it is about 4%, or the fact that the UK violent crime rate and contact crime rates are worse than in the US. That study has been thoroughly trashed by anyoen who looks into the methodology. So what? Would you rather be stabbed to death? A gun is a very effective tool. It can be used to commit horrible crimes, and it can be used to prevent horrible crimes. In fact, guns are used to prevent anywhere from 1 to 3.6 million crimes every year. (studies by Clinton DOJ, Kleck, and others) Yes, so we have a violent crime problem, and suicides still happen. What's your point? Would it matter to you if I posted the number of Americans who drowned or died in car accidents since 1962? What does this nubmer mean to you? Or are you just going for some shock value without providing context or comparisons? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
