Safety in High-Performance Canopy Piloting
ramon replied to conor's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Wow that was gruesome. Reminded me of an incident that did not turn out good. Andy is very lucky. I did notice his canopy was just beginning to plain out, but it was hard to tell if it actually slowed vertical speed before he hit. A hit like that could possibly kill you (if not femur or fractured vertabrae). Just depends on what breaks and if you are lucky. ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce. -

I practice with my team usually but take every moment I can to hit the ditch. I usually have a goal in mind, like working on hiting targets or working on distance and I stick to that goal all weekend. Periodically I will do 4-5 hop n pops in a row on the ditch with the same in mind. I always plan swooping around team jumps, but I always take the out and abort if ther is a lot of traffic. Hey Brat-ney. Not for me, but I'll put you in the right direction at the DZ. You'll understand. ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

hmmm I don't think that is the "best bet" so I'll help my buddy get a pocket slider.

Ok, I have a question but we need to step back for a moment. Let us assume I know someone with a canopy that opens very hard about 50% of the time. Lets dispense with packing method and saying "you should jump this it opens good" lets accept the fact that some canopies open inherently hard Lets assume a person can control their slider stops and is able to make a very good pack job that can sometimes cause reasonable openings on this canopy. What do you think could be done by a rigger to slow down an opening, reliably and why. These are my ideas and I was wondering if and which have merit. 1. bigger slider (I have heard this does not always help) 2. lighter grommets (if you beleive in slider rebound, aluminum grommets have less mass andmight slow the slider coming down compared to brass or steel) 3. Pocket slider (is ther anything about these that has proven to not be the best option). 4. custom one off baloon slider (I have only seen one of these used on a hard opening FX). I appreciate your input. My goal was not to start a canopy bashing or get in to a packing method spree. Packing methods have been explored on this one. thanks all ramon P.S. My canoy opens very soft but if I do a really poor job controlling my slider and line stowes I can make it open hard too, there all different "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

At your wingloading and skill level, I would go down size only. but I would do it as cheaply as possible (used). Take your time get used to the canopy and the added speed. As you feel confident go borrow or demo the same size stilleto or crossfire. think about how you feel, are you comfortable. Once you get the bug buy a used stilleto or crossfire that is same size and sell the used sabre. Now really work on getting to know the ins and outs of the canopy. good luck ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

Starting hookturns in full flight or a braked aproach
ramon replied to eugeneskydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
For a VX as opposed to a xaos I would like to be seeting up slowly in at least partial brakes so that I can get a nice easy accurate carve before the steeper part of the turn. sometimes when setting up I would have a little too much speed and the riser pressure would be a lot harder and would throw off my turn. the canopy likes a very controlled turn or the riser pressure can be high enough to mess you up. On the Comp Cobalt I don't have that problem as the pressure is always light, but my old VX definitely liked to be going a little slower to start the hook. Can't speak for Xaos but I would think they are more like th cobalt as far as riser pressure. "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce. -

Comp Cobalt to be delivered today!!!!
ramon replied to kansasskydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I love the 105 I am jumping. Lots of people reading this thread forget that PD pretended that there were no issues with the sabre. That Precision did recall a bunch of reserves and then say it wasn't a recall and try to charge customers for the mod. That Icarus released like 12 or more versions of their parachutes during production with varying opening characteristics. And that Icarus canopies made in Spain or New Zealand tend to not have the stitching come un done. None of these guys are perfect, but they all make good products. Atair included. All of them have military contracts. ..most of them could not stay in business with out them...... Because this is such a "verbal" sport, and many people are highly opinionated (eventhough they may be totally wrong) you must take evrything for what it is worth (an opinion from someone that probably likes different brands of cars than you ). Demo demo demo..... ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce. -

Cobalt will typically have slower staged openings, although a good stilleto opens well also. Cobalt has lighter riser pressure (swooping) I don't think you are there yet, and it has a little more botom end. They both have very flat glides and the cobalt does fly big, but the cobalt can also be kept in a dive longer if youstay on the front risers Although I am a Cobalt guy I would not downsize so much. Jump the 135...later when you are ready you can always demo a smaller cobalt. ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

I've been thinking about it and my total uneducated guess is that maybe they will exit the pond at some point and have to get freaky styley and grind down the rail... "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

gotta be quick if you are getting too low on rear risers.... "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

Wow. Hard to tell from the picks what happened. looks like your canopy was attached backwards. "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

Canopy coaching is good. concentrate on landing pattern and accuracy. If you are serious you will make a couple of jumps (I do this on a regular basis) where you will open very high. test every aspect of your canopy (plan the test on the ground..stall point, rear riser flying..etc Scott can help you with that). Really knowing your own and your canopy's capabilities is the first step in safely learning to make it perform. Aside from reading books like high Performance canopy flying by Jeff Sobieski getting help from a good canopy pilot is probably the most important thing. when I was first learning I was lucky enough to have hooknswoop around to watch and critique. bloo skies ramon "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.

Curious canopy question for the Napkin jumpers
ramon replied to jumper03's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I jump at about 2.1-2.2. I would prefer not to have to set my canopy down in a small unknown area. the small area is not the problem the problem is that many times small telephone and or power lines not visible at 1000' when you commit to your plan of action suddenly become visible while making a turn on to final. Smaller canopies will have a greater rate of descent no matter the angle or efficiency so quick desicion making becomes crucial when landing in tight areas especially residential areas. It is much much easier to make last minute decisions on a 7 cell loaded at 1.2 and then actually sink the canopy striaght down to avoiad an obstacle than to realize there is a cable in your glide path on final under a 95 at 2.3 I can set my canopy down in a very small area if need be, the problem is the unknown areas causing poor decisions. I have incorporated landing area considerations well in to my skydiving such that I have landed off only once since I started loading over 2.0 (of course this was one where small guide wires and powerlines appeared on final . I am usually last out on the first pass. but my napkin of choice (Competition Cobalt 105) always gets me back to the DZ...knock on wood "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce. -

I think the PST uses video cameras. If you go to Radio Shack (here in the US) you can buy electric eyes very cheaply and rig them to a buzzer (bzzzzz. yes he broke the plane with his foot, and rely on video for disputes). It might be sort of hard to level and make secure (especially if someone takes out the eye) but it woudl serve your purpose.. If you were really cool you could use a laser and a smke machine to make it visible. the laers could go to a cheap detector (also available at radio shack and electronics sotres to ring a buzzer.) good luck "Revolution is an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.", Ambrose Bierce.
