Campaigning in a church (whichever side of the isle you stand on) is bringing YOUR message to the Church, rather than bringing the Church's message to the People at large. I'm very leary of our government dictating some religious code to the citizens. But I'm, personally, not bothered by campaigning in church. Good, there should also be a Department of Developmental Disabilities within your State Department of Human Services (the exact name may vary by state). If religous groups wish to do charitable work and do not do it to "garner points" or to convert others then, why interject religion in their work? Why not just leave religion out of the work altogether and focus only on providing care? Heck! When I do something good, I want my name on it! Where religious groups are concerned, if their name is attached to the good things they do, they are more likely to attract the support of others who appreciate the work they do. Donations. Religious groups rely on private donations, as it should be. You just said that some of us don't need the external teaching of good manners. I'd say those people are the execption, and few and far between. No. That's not what I said. I said some people don't need external "enforcement" of basic good manners. IOW, we don't all need some god setting our limits for us. Sure we learn how to behave as children, and many people internalize what they learn and don't require the fear of god to keep 'em in line or to know what's right and wrong. There is no overriding law of right and wrong To think that you have to believe in some god in order to have a sense of morality is just silly. Not all people need external enforcement of basic good manners. A lot of people have goodness within themselves...lol. Quilt is not something that you can measure in a lab. I do get where you're coming from, and I'm not sure that I disagree with you...though this is one of those things I've really not thought much about. Alcohol is treated as very innocuous, when in reality it's an especially harmful substance for a lot of people, and probably for our society in general. Imagine people being willing to pay as much for their health care as they are willing to pay for their fingernails. Really. Can't get folks to pay a $20 copay (because they "don't have enough money"), but they can pay for fingernails and cell phone text messaging. I always wonder what qualifies in people's minds as "welfare." Are tax breaks "welfare?" What about federally guaranteed student loans? Are they "welfare?" What if part of a hospital bill was written off ten years ago? Was that welfare? Do monetary *perks* from the government only count as "welfare" if you're poor? If a upper-middle class person receives some benefits here and there....do those count as "welfare," or is there a different name for it because he makes enough money to send his children to college? For last fifty years we as a human race have been abusing the natural selection process. Which was there for purpose to keep the species healthy and competitive in the environment. "Natural selection" is not there for any particular *purpose*. It just is. Technically it could be even considered "abandoned property", in which case - in some countries I know about - the government gets kind of ownership about it. It's funny. I've never seen "the government" offering to pay burial expenses. The signs dont bother me, it was just a shock seeing something as personal as religion being thrust in your face. The "going to hell" ones are nothing once you see the "abortion kills/dead babies" signs. To each his own, though. The reason why you don't hear about crack babies anymore is because it was a "myth." Don't believe me? Google "crack babies." Then look up fetal alcohol syndrome. Not a myth. I've seen plenty of 'em. Taken care of 'em. Fetal alcohol syndrome causes more obvious problems down the road.
