They restrained him, I think, for making the comment. He was tazered because they were putting handcuffs on him or something...lol. Seemed pretty arbitrary to me. Unfortunately, it was one of my favorite cops who did it. Changed my opinion of him a bit. BUT, this is a rough little town. More than enough shootings, stabbings, beatings...that sort of thing. When the ambulance is bringing someone in after that type of incident, there's always the *enemies* driving up and down the road in front of the hospital...or parked across the street. There's nothing keeping them out of where we are except the police. I'm ALWAYS glad to have them around. And even though my thoughts about the use of tazers are completely opposed to how they were used in the trauma room last night (with my patient), it's something that I'd never question him about. Tonight I saw a guy get tazered. He was brought in as a gsw, but he hadn't been shot... Was good and drunk though. I had walked out of the room to grab my stethoscope, and when I got back to the room, the patient was being restrained by the police. Apparently he had made some sexual comment or gesture to the nurse, and the officer became involved at that point. They told him to stop fighting, and as they rolled him over (he was still struggling, but that's about all), one of the officers tazered him. Most of the Top ten.. Red States... Most of the bottom 10 Blue states.... Interesting That IS interesting. I wonder why it is???? Surely the conservative women folk aren't all histrionic or something???? Or maybe they're just beaten down.... That wasn't funny, I know. I have had so many experiences with this from so many different angles, some professionally and others personally. It's not easy to keep it objective. It's also hard for me to see how problems this deep would have any kind of political underpinnings....unless Republicans really DO beat their wives more often than their Democratic counterparts...lol. BTW she had coke in her toxscreen which *could* be contributing to her emotional state. She needs help. I'm surprised that she was actually getting a new liver. Those can be hard to come by, and are usually reserved for people who are not expected to abuse the new one. A person with an active cocaine addiction would not be a typical candidate. When I get people in the ER who are actively suicidal or have made a "gesture," it's appropriate to put them in the hospital, against their will if necessary. Treating the problem as serious does not mean ya' have to feed into a lot of overly-dramatic behavior. Just don't let the person's screwed-up emotional state cloud your judgment about the need for intervention. Even though you're not in a position to determine treatment, I hope you at least treat these folks with respect. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. The majority of the people who were institutionalized in a place like where you worked, who were deinstitutionalized and became homeless and often imprisoned are chronically, seriously mentally ill people. There are certainly people among that population who do or would commit suicide. And if these people are suicidal and want help, then it should be given. Treatment for the chronically mentally ill is, obviously, difficult. Even though the definitions of what we consider mental illness do change over time, it's the behavior of suicide that's important here. Regardless of how definitions change, I think it's clear that a person who attempts or considers suicide has psychiatric problems, no matter which DSM you're looking at. And, with the exception of the chronically, seriously mentally ill (most of whom carry diagnoses other than major depression), I DO think that treatment for depression over the years has improved dramatically. There are also people with personality disorders. A lot of people with personality disorders make failed suicide attempts. Personality disorders, on the whole, aren't particularly responsive to current treatments. They're likely to have more frequent episodes of suicidality than others with major depressive episodes. BUT having a personality disorder does not preclude one from having bouts of depression too. At what point do you say, "fuck it--just do it or STFU!"? Walt It's apparent that you were being sarcastic and that I, obviously, was not. If you're in the medical field, you should NEVER say "just do it or STFU." If you're a friend or family member of the suicidal person, then I guess you say it when you want to. I see the same people you're talking about in the ER. Your folks bring them to me. That statement shows a lot of ignorance about the people you're taking care of. It's frightening, really. I think it may be true that women tend to be more verbal about many things. As a person is getting to the point of considering suicide, you can't expect that they're at their emotional best, and their asking for help may happen in ways that put people off. But ANYONE who says he/she is suicidal REALLY needs to not be blown off by people in the medical community. Really. I think the critical time is in that week or so before following through with a suicide....the time when their decision can be influenced. There are obviously people who never let anyone know that they're suicidal, perhaps more men than women, before they commit a final act. Those people, I promise you, are also pretty emotionally screwed up prior to shootin' themselves in the head (or however they accomplish their goal). They just chose not to let anyone in during the time before they made a final decision. If they had sought help the outcome might have been better for those folks too.
