Rape in the military: Female troops deserve much better More than 59,000 female troops have been deployed overseas to support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have flown combat missions, served on ships and, in 12 cases, died in Iraq — stark evidence of the equality women have attained as soldiers. Yet, when several reported sexual assaults in the combat zone during the past year, equal treatment vanished. They say their complaints were ignored or spurred mistreatment by male superiors. That stinks...really. BUT I'm not sure that it's any different than in the US at large. It's not just that female troops deserve much better. Women in general deserve much better. MOST women don't report rapes because the backlash is so severe. Ya' know....on a similar (sort of) note, a doctor that I work with committed suicide this past weekend. As his death was investigated, it's been amazing to see the gleam in folks eyes as they speculated about his death. Hope that's not the case here....but "the bit 'C'?" Once, after a far-off out landing, I packed in the front yard of an old friend's neighbor's house. Kicker is that I hadn't seen that old friend in 15 years until she came outside and we both realized that I had landed a parachute in her back yard....lol. It was great. I've already shown that the tax breaks (the so-called 'trickle down' economy) actually REMOVES people from the tax rolls (since they no longer are liable for taxes)....care to explain how "that only helps out rich folks"? Mike, you can make just about anything work in theory if you try hard enough. This is one, though, that just hasn't panned out in real life. Do you have any historical (not theoretical) examples in which it HAS worked to put more money in the hands of the middle class or poor? If the goal is to make the wealthy wealthier, then I'd rather it just be sold that way. Clearly. I was trying to figure out a way to blame Bush since it took place in Texas and as we know, Bush once was Governor of that great state. But the daughter (the errant youth in question) is 16, which means she was likely born in 1992... also the year that Clinton was first elected. Coincidence? I think not. Of course he isn't going to point out that the upper quintile pays more taxes than they get - that derails his argument. You get EXACTLY what you pay for....as long as you factor in administrative costs and fluff. Well, it does stink when the money's just not there, but similarly, I have house maintenance costs...things I don't really get to see and enjoy, but that are necessary. The bug man comes, sometimes ya' have to paint, or fill in the mortar between bricks. The air conditioner is leaking again. Gotta fix the fence. Need a new pump for the pool. A guest broke the glass door on the guest bath tub. The heating and a/c bill is more than ya' hoped. Gotta clean the carpets....and on and on and on. I'd LIKE to spend my money in other ways, but so much of it gets eaten up just maintaining my home. Of course taxes don't go to your house, but it DOES cost money to keep our society working. How efficient it is is questionable. No individual is gonna be 100% happy with where all of that money goes. And it has to come from somebody's pocket! Few people are happy when its theirs. So if you're that business owner and have to pay more for maintaining things than you wanted....why should it be the NEXT guy instead of you? The guy who has much less than 100K to put back....should HE be the one who bears the responsibility of maintaining things? My son "rescued" a little pit bull that was chained up under an old shack (not a house...nobody lives there) on the edge of town. He's probably a little less than a year old. A sweet, but scared (and that bothers me), little dog. He's a little hungry, but not emaciated by any means. Beautiful little guy. Anyway, I can't quite tell my son to take the dog back to where he got it. I figure he was gonna be turned into a fighting dog. Can't figure out what I'm gonna do with this dog now. I've spent time with and trained dogs before. I suppose I could make the time....but it's not my first choice. I wonder how hard it would be to find a good home for this little guy. Billvon, I appreciate your points. I'll just have to disagree with you. Consumer spending impacts the economy now, but investment spending has long term effects. Trickle-down economics have only helped out the rich folks in the past. The middle classes and the poor only got poorer. I'm talking about my son again, the one who would argue with a signpost. His understanding of big words isn't very mature because he doesn't have all that much experience in the world. When he asks me what words mean, he needs pretty exact definitions given to him because he's young and not very sophisticated with language yet.
