Ten times as many people die each year here in the US from the flu. Where's the war on flu? That 30,000 is comprised mostly of elderly people. If you look at the number of young healthy people who die of flu, I think it might be more like 1/10th of the 3,000 killed on 9/11. Is it fair to lose your car for drinking and driving - assuming you don't hit anyone else? I've never seen anyone forfeit their car over a DWI, but I've seen someone lose his boat because of a little weed. Ouch. I'm sure if the tobacco companies just added the "Please smoke responsibly" line to their ads, then no one would ever get sick from second-hand smoke again. In the same way that no one but the drinker is ever harmed by alcohol. At least it's possible to drink responsibly. Alcohol in moderation has actual health benefits. Smoking is bad juju all the way around. You can drink at the same table with other people without harming them. You can't say the same thing for smoking cigarettes. I'm glad that advertising for both has changed. Remember the television ads during after-school tv? The Marlboro man? HA! when do statements like those of Wright go beyond being angry and become hateful? Were they in fact hateful? I still don't know what he said. Haven't heard it or read it, so I can't give my thoughts on his particular statements. But I do have thoughts about anger and hatred. Anger is what you feel. What parent is going to want their kid hanging around with someone who is known to have smoked pot? Seems the only ones would be those parents who either don't care or are not paying attention. You might be surprised. I think that if he were 13 or 14 y/o then that'd be more of an issue. At 17 though? I don't think it'd be such a big deal. I'm concerned that he'll be "branded" by his current friends and fall in with new, less desirable ones. Aren't his current friends the people he's smoking marijuana with? In my experience, when people quit using drugs, the groups they fall in with tend to be more, rather than less, desirable. FWIW, I think you're setting some good, clear boundaries. It does matter to me. I don't think it's right that some people have to work harder to not get as far, especially when it's not their fault (sorry folks, nobody chooses to be born into poverty or to attend substandard schools with violence issues...). Don't you want things to be easier for your kid than they were for you? Why not apply that desire to other people's kids too? Or are we so selfish that we really, honestly don't give a shit that what our society calls success appears completely out of reach to a large percentage of our population... as long as we get ours? Well, in saying it "doesn't matter to me," I mean that I don't care that some people have it easier than me or that some people have it harder than me....that to me, doing what I have to do is what's important. Not that I don't care about others' hardships or that I don't care about social issues. While it's crystal clear that social issues play a huge role in how easily people succeed in life, I'm not sure there's a great way to make up for it. Inequalities are a part of life. I think the best we can do is to work towards overcoming racism, classisms, poverty, etc. Those are the appropriate goals. I DON'T think it's appropriate to try to compensate for these things by falsely trying to level the playing field. I believe that by giving folks the message that it's too hard for this person or that person to make it in life because (s)he's black, or female, or poor only sends that person and others in her situation the message that she's not capable because she's black, or female, or poor. People, regardless of the relative difficulty of it, CAN make it even though some may have to work harder than others. Other people's kids ARE my kid in many ways. My kid comes from a single-parent home, and he lives in rural Arkansas, for heaven's sake. You ever checked out our public schools???? Think he or I, either one, have had nearly the access to education that y'all out in Cali do???? We grow up with teachers who can't form a correct sentence. Really. I, personally, finished high school without knowing how to write a simple essay and was absolutely overwhelmed my first semester in college at University of Florida. I had to work TWICE as hard as my classmates to pass just about EVERYTHING. But eventually I caught up, almost. To me, it makes more sense for me to work toward improving our educational system than it does for me to expect the Ivy League schools to lower their standards to accommodate people from rural Arkansas. I want my child to understand that he may be at a disadvantage educationally because of teachers like Ms Shipp (one of his teachers this year with a BS who isn't certified....and in my opinion is dumber than dirt). I want him to take from that that he has to WORK harder, not that he needs a hand up because of his educational disadvantage. I say the same thing for being female, or black, or poor. I do want to qualify my statements about a hand up, though. There are programs in place that I think are helpful and that I'm glad are there. Student loans, Pell grants, scholarships that may favor a person because of one social situation or another, work-study programs, and the like are great, imho. These types of programs give folks a way to succeed in college once they've made it there on their own merit. Hot wings and birthday cake. My son is 11 on Saturday. Can't believe it! And he still loves a good hug, even if his friends are around. He says "I love you, mom," and he's not embarrassed if I blow him a kiss when I drop him off at school. But I have to wonder, if I were a 40 year old black single mother working 40 hours a week and trying to go to school full time, would I be able to not resent someone who has it easier? Someone like that has to work two or three times as hard to accomplish her goal as I am having to work to accomplish mine. I don't know... I think it'd be awfully hard to not be resentful in that position. Say you're a 40 y/o white single mother who has to work twice as hard as another 40 y/o white single mother to accomplish the same goal because that OTHER mom's family has money. They hand her all she needs, help with her child, and have connections that generally make her way easy, while you have to work double time just to get to the point she starts at. Would you feel resentful because of THAT? I'm certain that I've had to work harder as a 40 y/o white single mom to get through medical school and residency than the 25 y/o white men. Heck, I'm not resentful. I'm also certain that I've had it easier than some other people because my family has made sure I had all I needed, financially, during the process. I'm proud of what I've done. It doesn't matter that it's harder, in a lot of ways, or easier in others, than what some other folks go through. I've done what I've had to do. What other people have to do to accomplish the same thing really doesn't matter to me. I'm absolutely certain that racism, prejudice, years and years of inequality (that I also am certain is getting better) make the playing field unequal. BUT I also say, "so what?" I think it's the people who can let go of resentment and work towards their goals who succeed. And its THOSE people who effect change, too. (But I'm just guessing on that.) It is kind of a strange dynamic, but I liken "moderator" to "bouncer." Does your church have a bouncer??? I think there are too many people in her vying for the position of primary preacher, and I think it's that competition that keeps people coming back.
