Is Downs Syndrome a communicable disease? I don't think the CDC is concerned with Downs Syndrome. I hope you're being facetious. Even though it's not communicable, there are ways to minimize the number of children born with Down Syndrome. There are ways to minimize the number of children born with Spina Bifida. Unfortunately, some people have children later in life, and some people don't take their Folate supplements. Lots of people choose not to undergo tests during pregnancy to diagnose these problems prior to birth....often because they'd not terminate the pregnancy based on the results. So there's a problem....often people who are vehemently against abortion are also dead set against providing means to people to take care of children whose care will cost LOTS of money. I think that's odd. OTOH, those folks who think a woman has a right to decide are also more often willing to help the kids out. That's an aside, though. Either way, there's a place for compassion, I think, for people who just have bad things happen in their lives. Not everyone has the means to deal with the crap that befalls them. I'm glad there's a safety net for those. BUT, there are a helluva lot of folks who are just bound and determined to take what they can. To pretend that these are just folks who are "less privileged" is ridiculous, imho. They need to be CUT OFF from the dole. I don't begin to know the answer to that. Don't know anymore about the case than what was presented in that first article. I believe that a person who was sincerely acting in what he thought was the best interest of his child in an act like this should probably be paroled. But who knows what this guy's motives were. I agree with you. There is a difference between euthanasia when a person has a terminal illness and has reached the end of what can medically be done to ease their suffering and a person deciding it's "compassionate" to end a 12 y/o child's life because of a disability. Many people have pain. I don't think that pain makes their lives meaningless. Lots and lots of people live with pain every day and don't choose to end their own lives. Why would someone else have a right to end it for them. I agree that this guy's probably not a threat to society anymore. I don't think that his crime can be overlooked though. Dude take a poll. Should tax money go for 1 roads/education ..or 2 cerebral palsy/Down's Syndrome ..or 3 keep having children with no way to support them. I personally agree that there is a place for us collectively taking care of kids who have congenital problems....or any serious illness really. I have a problem with number 3. In fact, recently a patient who is 16 said that her mother wants her to get pregnant so that she can contribute financially to the household. That's NOT a good way to spend our tax dollars, imho. In fact it leads to a deeper and deeper drain on society in rewarding people for popping out babies that they have no real intention of taking care of. Leads to irresponsible adults eventually who keep doing the same things their parents and grandparents did.... Right now we still have (sort of) the cream of the crop, though we're starting to see some laziness set in. 10 years ago the folks who came here were hard workers. They were the ones who had the initiative to make things better for themselves and did it. Now we have their children and random folks who are sliding through on paths that the hard workers laid. Oh, so taxes should only go for things YOU approve of. Nope. But I do think that government-run welfare programs should be scaled back. How about our taxes go to things that are distributed evenly....like education, highways, the things we all use. Beyond that, charity is where it's at. I also believe that my good fortune puts an obligation on me to pay my taxes (without whining) to belong to a society that allows these good things to happen, educates its children, and doesn't allow the least fortunate to satrve on the streets. There's paying to be sure that certain societal obligations are met, and there's paying to make sure people who do little to improve their own circumstances have plenty. My good fortune working a typical 40-hour week would still be good. My good fortune working 100+ hours a week is very good, but I find little time for watching tv. I don't think my labor should buy a tv (much less cell phones, spinners and big sub-woofers for her boyfriend's car, and on and on) for someone who's not interested in bustin' her own ass. The problem is that I WORK MY ASS OFF for what I have. I'm in the market for an airplane. I can afford it because I work more than twice the hours in a week as most people who work full time. I buy all kinds of tape, almost weekly and can NEVER find any! YEAH! Me too. What's up with that???? Not like there's tape all over my kid's room either. It just disappears. I get what happens to the M&M's and the toilet paper. But this tape thing has me baffled too.
